Here's a current comparison of my work-in-progress 4k restoration of 37 minutes of the 1960 Jayne Mansfield film, Too Hot to Handle. This is my color correction versus the raw Cintel scan by Phil Clark.
I had made mockups in Photoshop of what this material would look like ideally, and generated LUTs to correct the color. Lookup tables were created in DrDre's Color Matching Tool and the two best ones were rendered in After Effects CS6 and averaged. Since the resulting color was rather noisy, the result was noise reduced, using Neat Video temporal noise reduction, one frame, in After Effects. All of this took over three days rendering.
The first reel is noticeably more faded than the other half, with very little yellow/blue left, and could use more work. There is an overall red/green tint and some spurious color shifts at some points in the spectrum. We're also losing a bit of detail in the darker areas. To get this result, I shifted the Hue of one of my color mockups by 30 before creating the LUT, to capture a different section of the spectrum and avoid silver/purple skin tones.
While the third half-reel looks equally faded to the eye, it was much easier to work with, having some blue and yellow still present in the material. It could also use some work, with silver or purple skin tones, some desaturated sections of the flesh tone spectrum, and slightly weak color, but it required less trickery to get this result.
The final half-reel is much less faded, with just a red shift, and is not pictured here. (This half-reel is also the censored version of the film, but this does not affect Jayne's song number much. The other three are uncensored.)I can tweak the LUTs further, but the next real step is conforming the more cropped (and censored) DVD source to this version, which is a pain in the butt, and will cause some difficulty with the cropping issues.
