The View-Master Interactive Vision's VHS tapes contain gameplay data at right, and optical audio at left. This is hard to translate to a DVD, or other digital format, because the data starts during the blanking area inbetween frames, probably to make piracy more difficult. The data is about eight (or ten) lines early up top, and the audio even more so. Here's a full view, with slightly incorrect colors.This was captured as an RF stream, and decoded with VHS-decode. If the picture is simply shifted down by about eight (or ten) lines (depending), some of the game functionality works, although the optical audio has a terrible buzzing. An emulator could probably get around the quirks in the format, but it has been difficult to fully preserve the gameplay in a DVD edit. The console hardware has been analyzed and dumped by Sean Riddle.Preserving the material in digital format has been trickier than expected, and took a few months of refinement.All seven of the tapes are now playable, using DVDs and the original hardware. They do still have problems.Four were already mostly working on DVD. I did a new RF decode for the three that weren't working at all, retrieving a couple lines of data at the top that were out of bounds previously.There are some finer details I'm still figuring out -- as noted, the audio is still very buzzy from a DVD source for whatever reason, and there are points where the tape "flashes" and loses sync with the console, and it's hard to get it to recognize the console again afterward. (The first Sesame Street tape also has a brief missing section in the existing RF capture.) I am fixing this in editing, and will render it this week.Disney's Cartoon Arcade works surprisingly well, and that's the most important gamewise. It's a bunch of games and doesn't rely heavily on alternate audio. The controller is rubbish.I didn't expect the console to be this finicky. You'd figure that with VHS, it would have a lot of failsafes built in so that the signal doesn't have to be perfect, but it really does have to be spot on. And it seems to decide not to work arbitrarily, especially after an hour of use. Even so I'm pretty confident in the preservation at this point. The data is present except for a few little glitches which can be edited around.This would still require real hardware. Sean Riddle dumped and analyzed the hardware for possible emulation in the future, if anyone picks up the project.
