I don't especially like drawing backgrounds. Here's a few from my current original project. The first two are for some mini-videogames. Admittedly, it's rushed work. I sketched something out digitally, and then inked it on two sheets paper. It's possible that the inked lines won't even be seen in the final color version. I improvised the details of the flowers while inking, and cleaned that up digitally. The stalactites at the top of the second drawing also became more narrow during assembly, and the bush at right became smaller (and was turned on its side).I've drawn the art for nineteen mini-videogames for this "episode" of the project. You might recognize the inspiration here. I'm still working on the backgrounds.My work has always involved some back and forth between digital and traditional, but I wasn't usually sketching anything digitally. I like to ink pretty large, using several sheets of paper that will be compiled into one image. It's easier for me to see and understand the entire composition digitally, but I prefer to draw and ink on paper. And I prefer to work at a scale where I can include lots of detail. I would often do smaller pencil sketches, assemble those digitally, and then ink them at a larger scale than I'd initially sketched the drawing at.Backgrounds have often been an exception to this, because I don't especially like drawing backgrounds. Those color exteriors (for a mini-comic) were just done on a single sheet of paper. Nothing fancy. I had roughed out a perspective grid for the parking lots, and had the basics of a building and barrier in the backgrounds, but these were incomplete. I did a pencil sketch and then inked from there, then redrew some of it digitally to get straight lines and straighter perspective.I had to remove many details from these backgrounds in the actual comic, when they interfered with the characters, text and props. These backgrounds are mostly covered up by those things in the final, although it depends on which version you're looking at!
