Chemical Bath is a Patreon podcast where we work through the most important writings on photography one chapter at a time, starting with Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida. Photography has an overwhelming amount of theory behind it, yet most photographers never read it or engage with it in any meaningful way. This podcast slows things down and looks closely at the ideas that shaped how we understand photographs, their meaning, and their place in art.
In this first episode, we explore chapters one and two of Camera Lucida: “Speciality of the Photograph” and “The Photograph Unclassifiable.” We look at Barthes’ reflections on the relationship between a photograph and its referent, why photography resists classification, what makes the medium philosophically unique, and why defining “what photography is” remains nearly impossible. Along the way, we examine how these ideas mirror our own frustrations, obsessions, and solitude as photographers trying to think more deeply about the medium.
