In this second episode, we explore chapters three and four of Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida: “Emotion as Departure” and “Operator, Spectrum, Spectator.” These chapters mark a turning point where Barthes openly rejects established critical languages like sociology, semiology, and psychoanalysis in favor of a more personal and singular way of thinking about photography. We examine his resistance to reductive systems, his idea of a “Mathesis singularis,” and why he ultimately positions himself as the mediator through which photography must be understood.
The episode also breaks down Barthes’ foundational framework of Operator, Spectrum, and Spectator, outlining the three roles that exist in every photograph and the tensions between making, being photographed, and looking.
