With the 2nd birthday of Within coming up this Saturday, I thought I’d share some of the very first versions of what later became Within as a whole.
Starting from a piece that never saw the light of day, which I’ll talk about one day, Within emerged with full force and a deep joy of creation. It burst out like a waterfall, as suddenly many things I had wanted to do throughout the years 2020-2024 came together.
In Within Will 12, you can hear that moment. This is the first version where that realization lies in its full force. Nothing is assembled yet, but everything is there as a possibility, and that’s where the excitement and joy of creation come from. A new door opening, discovering a world you know is now waiting to be discovered.
You can even hear me playing the piano in a very raw way, starting to get excited by these ideas, with the entire body and fingers involved. And even if it doesn’t sound like anything to you, at this stage there is a close connection between the creator and the creation, where you understand it in a different way and are excited only about what might exist soon, rather than what’s already there.
In that version, you can hear what my initial step into this world was, and the very first moment of finding it.
Next, we go back to the very first version, which is far away from everything, but you can hear how things often begin: completely abstract, with just the slightest idea of what’s about to come.
Within Will 6 is older than version 12, but it’s the first export where things start to take shape, even if not a solid shape yet.
I have many more things to share about this, but everything in its time. Next, I might share material from a folder called building blocks, which I’ll expand on in the future. There, you can hear how the poem found its way into the piece (as there were many attempts to work with the voice in that way, and to use other poems from the same writer), and where some of the sounds emerged from, with their original roles.
I hope that hearing the joy of that first discovery of a new creation will let this positive feeling resonate with you.
