In a way, continuing the Within series that started on its 2nd birthday, and also deviating from it a bit, today I share with you the sketches from a project that began in 2022. It was unrelated to Within, but after extracting some elements from it, it later became one of its important building blocks.
I believe this will give you an interesting peek behind the scenes of some of my working methods. You can really hear how the idea transforms throughout these sketches, how certain things are tested (maybe you'll recognize something from version 14, but more on that later; that theme is not originally part of these sketches!) until I find a way in which I want to use it.
The second half of the last sketch (that was separated from the rest) - “EXTRACTED HAPPINESS FROM COLDEST NIGHT” if I remember correctly, is really one of the most important building blocks of Within, where some of its core elements began to take real shape.
There is also a somewhat humorous aspect to it, with the joy and freeing feeling of new inspiration. You can hear me singing this on top of that last sketch to highlight, I believe, the joyful, free, and happy burst I was trying to hint at there.
That last sketch was made, as the name suggests, to extract happiness out of the sketch “Coldest Night.” As I'm writing this, I'm realizing the funny (unintended) way this could be phrased - not by aim, but by coincidence: extracting happiness from the coldest night? I honestly don’t remember this wordplay being intentional.
Now I know that you’ll hear this while already knowing what it eventually became, but try to place yourself in the position of that unknown future, the many possibilities that existed at that stage of the creation. A route of new possibilities had just opened, and now you have to decide, most of all, which of all the things you will not do, before developing the chosen path.
I hope this will be a fun little voyage for you through these transformations, which are, after all, a bit more light, humorous, and free than usual.
