This topic took 3 months of research and I've had to read MANY actual academic articles by other linguists. It wasn't easy and I learned a lot myself as well!
I've compiled everything I learned into 25 pages in the "Extended Reading Material" document below- a lot of the "extra" stuff is not "necessary" for beginners and is meant for ADVANCED LEARNERS so don't worry if you're a nooby and a bit confused by it.
