DESCRIPTION

Hi Everyone,This practice thought is about my favorite class in college and how it changed the way I think about music.

I mentioned IPA (not the beer) in this video but I didn't add visuals. Check out this wikipedia article to learn more about the International Pheonetic Alphabet.

It's about the idea of prescriptive rules vs descriptive rules and how your approach to music might change dramatically if you think of the rules as descriptive rather than prescriptive.

This also relates to my idea of IF-THEN in music theory, where we're never discussing what you OUGHT to do in a musical sense. Instead, we're discussing your goals, to say "IF your goal is to sound X, THEN you ought to do Y."

I hope this helps you let go of fear around "doing things right" or "doing things the normal way" because there is no normal music. There is only goal-oriented music. This is why it's so important to have personal goals for your musical journey, because you'll get bored if you're trying to be a "typical, normal musician" because music doesn't work like that. If you have no IF, you can't have a THEN.
