DESCRIPTION

This week's Community Challenge is: Write something bone dry

"Dry" and "dead" are words to describe the sound of an instrument or voice without the sound of a room or any effects based in time.

Compare how it sounds to talk in your coat closet, surrounded by thick layers of fabric compared to an empty room with no furniture, or a large concrete parking garage.

When there are lots of hard surfaces to reflect the sound, it keeps reverberating off the surfaces around you creating a "tail" of sound that continues after you or your instrument have ceased.

When you talk in a coat closet, there is no surface to reflect the sound - the coats absorb it.

This challenge is all about experimenting with no room sound, no reverb, no delay - no effects that give a "tail." If you're recording with your phone, you might want to record in the smallest room of your house or a coat closet to get that bone dry sound.

If you're using recording software, avoid all time-based effects and turn off the room sound on every instrument. See if you can write something interesting without it.

As usually, don't forget that your writing is practice. And practice is messy. Have fun. Don't take it too seriously.

Post your creations - however intense, complex, simple, short, long etc - to the community forum.
