Hi Everyone,
This community challenge is all about harmonizing a melody. Your goal is to choose chords to play that make this melody sound good. The video explains the details. Check out the PDF below and download the mp3 if you'd like to record over the top, or use the video below to play along and capture your final harmonization with your phone or some other device. I'm look looking for perfect recordings, I just want to see how you harmonize this melody.
Upload your audio and final PDFs to the Community Forum.
Melodies are tricky to harmonize. They can vary wildly from rigid and simple to ornate and complex. Some melodies create tension and dissonance and others stay safe and harmonious. I want you to see this challenge as an opportunity to explore how different chords can be used to make a melody feel different.
On the PDF, you'll see two color-coded charts: the one on the right shows how each chord in the key contains three different notes, the one on the left shows one note and how there are always three chords containing that one note.
Use this graph to explore which chords make the melody sound best to your ear.
I say it in the video, but I'll mention it here too: if you have an idea of how this challenge works, I suggest TRYING to plug in your own chord progression before watching the full video.
Have fun!
