Too Much Flavor

DESCRIPTION

Violet Beauregarde had never cared much for golden tickets, candy factories, or once-in-a-lifetime tours.

To everyone else, Wonka’s factory was a dream. A place of magic, mystery, and impossible inventions. But to Violet, it was something much simpler.

A competition.

After winning the gum-chewing contest at her college, Violet had earned her ticket into the most famous factory in the world. The prize was not the tour. The prize was not the wonder. The prize was the promise waiting at the end: a lifetime supply of chocolate.

And Violet was going to win it.

From the moment she stepped through the factory doors, she treated every room like another round in a contest. Every strange machine, every bizarre candy, every warning from Wonka only made her more certain that she was smarter, faster, and tougher than the other guests.

Then they reached the Inventing Room.

Inside, surrounded by bubbling vats, spinning machines, and strange new creations, Wonka revealed his latest experiment: a three-course dinner in a single piece of chewing gum.

Tomato soup.

Roast beef and baked potato.

Blueberry pie and ice cream.

Everyone stared in amazement, but Violet saw only one thing.

History.

The first person to eat an entire meal as chewing gum. The first person to prove it could be done. The first person to beat Wonka at his own invention.

Wonka warned her that the gum was unfinished. Her father told her to listen. The other guests stepped back nervously. But Violet’s pride had already taken over.

She snatched the gum from Wonka’s hand.

Before anyone could stop her, she popped it into her mouth and started chewing.

At first, it was perfect.

The flavor was better than anything she had ever tasted. Warm tomato soup washed over her tongue. Then came the rich, savory taste of roast beef and baked potato. Violet grinned wider with every chew, boasting that Wonka had finally made something worthy of her.

But then the dessert course began.

Blueberry pie.

The sweetness hit hard. Too hard.

Violet’s smile faded.

Something was wrong.

Her stomach tightened. Her cheeks puffed slightly. A strange pressure built inside her, as if the flavor was not just in her mouth anymore. It was spreading through her. Filling her. Turning every chew into another burst of blueberry juice.

Her father panicked first.

Wonka stayed calm, but even he knew what was happening.

Violet tried to stop chewing, but by then the gum had taken over. Her body began to swell, slowly at first, then faster. Her clothes pulled tight. Her arms pushed outward. Her face flushed blue. The more she fought it, the more helpless she became.

The room went silent as Violet expanded into a huge, round, blueberry-shaped version of herself.

Her pride disappeared into panic.

She could not move. She could barely shift her weight. All she could do was sit there, swollen and stuck, while the pressure of too much flavor filled her completely.

Wonka finally called for help.

The Oompa Loompas rushed in and surrounded her. At first, they tried to push her forward. Then they tried to pull her. One grabbed at her side. Another braced his feet against the floor. A few tried working together, pressing their shoulders into her round body, but Violet was too big and too heavy to move easily.

She rocked slightly, but stayed planted in place.

The workers gathered around her, confused and determined. They pushed, tugged, leaned, and adjusted their grip, trying anything that might get her out of the room. Violet could only look around helplessly as they inspected her like a problem too large for one person to solve.

Finally, after several failed attempts, they managed to tip her onto her side.

With a heavy roll, Violet began moving.

The Oompa Loompas guided her carefully through the factory, pushing and steering her toward the juicing room. Her father followed close behind, horrified by what had become of his daughter. The tour had gone from a dream to a nightmare in only a few minutes.

As Violet was rolled away, her father turned back toward Wonka, anger and heartbreak fighting in his voice.

“I’ll get you for this, Wonka, if it’s the last thing I ever do...”

Then his rage cracked.

He looked after Violet, his voice dropping into a sad, helpless whimper.

“I’ve got a blueberry for a daughter.”

And with that, Violet disappeared through the doors.

The tour moved on.

But Violet Beauregarde had learned the hard way that some prizes were not worth winning.

Sometimes, one chew too many is all it takes.

Sometimes, there really is such a thing as...

Too Much Flavor.
