DESCRIPTION

The glowing veins of Tyclodium faded into the background, replaced by a cascade of flashing military reports that spread across the command table. Bright blue Imperial supply routes stretched like delicate threads across the frozen continents, yet many of those lines were broken by crimson warning symbols. Entire convoys had vanished without explanation. Mining facilities blinked amber and red as production steadily declined, while patrol routes ended abruptly in the middle of mountain ranges, marked only by the word LOST.

Commander Wick stood beside the projector with his hands clasped behind his back. The blue light from the hologram reflected across his weathered face, making the exhaustion beneath his eyes even more apparent. Eleven months on Kaiser had clearly aged him.

He was still a proud Imperial officer, his posture rigid and disciplined, but the confidence he had likely carried when he first arrived on the planet had long since been tempered by reality.

"Everything ultimately comes back to these mines, my Lord," he said quietly.

He reached forward and enlarged one of the largest mining complexes on the western continent. Gigantic drilling towers appeared above the hologram, surrounded by processing facilities and fortified barracks.

"This installation alone was expected to produce nearly thirty percent of the Empire's projected Tyclodium output for this entire sector."

The image changed once more.

Projected production numbers disappeared, replaced instead by grim statistics.

Current Output: 11.8%

Operational Staff: 43%

Security Rating: Critical

Supply Status: Insufficient

Vader remained perfectly still.

His crimson lenses studied the figures without revealing a hint of emotion.

Commander Wick continued.

"The convoy attack two weeks ago changed everything."

Another projection rose above the table. This one was not a schematic, but an actual military recording.

A narrow mountain road wound its way between towering walls of ice. Heavy transport vehicles crawled slowly through the frozen pass, escorted by walkers and platoons of clone troopers marching alongside them.

"It was one of our largest resupply operations since occupying Kaiser," Wick explained. "Ammunition. Food. Medical equipment. Replacement parts. Cold-weather gear. Everything our northern garrisons required."

For several seconds the recording remained peaceful.

Then...

The ground beneath the lead walker erupted. A tremendous explosion hurled snow and shattered ice hundreds of meters into the air. The transport column halted instantly. Before anyone could react, thunder echoed across the mountains.

Entire cliffs began collapsing.

Massive avalanches crashed down from both sides of the valley with unstoppable force.

The recording shook violently as snow consumed everything in its path.

Transports vanished beneath mountains of ice.

When the white cloud finally settled, the valley no longer existed.

The convoy had simply... disappeared.

Commander Wick deactivated the recording.

"Our escort consisted of four hundred clone troopers."

His voice remained steady despite what they had all witnessed.

"We recovered seventy-three survivors."

Several officers standing around the command chamber lowered their eyes. Some had likely served beside the men who had died in that valley. Others had probably helped recover what little remained afterward.

Commander Wick drew a slow breath before continuing.

"Half our ammunition reserves were buried beneath that mountain."

He touched another section of the display.

"Our medical supplies."

Another.

"Replacement machinery."

Another.

"Food shipments."

Finally he highlighted several warehouses that now blinked red.

"And nearly every piece of specialized equipment required to operate in Kaiser's climate."

He looked directly at Vader.

"We've been rationing ever since."

Vader studied the reports in silence.

To most commanders, this would appear to be an unfortunate military disaster.

This was not conventional warfare.

The Kaiserians rarely attacked Imperial fortresses directly.

They did not waste lives charging prepared defenses.

Instead they struck roads.

Collapsed bridges.

Destroyed communication towers.

Sabotaged supply depots.

They attacked logistics rather than soldiers.

Every destroyed convoy weakened the Empire far more effectively than winning a battlefield engagement ever could.

Finally Vader broke the silence.

"The blockade."

Commander Wick immediately nodded.

Another hologram expanded into view.

This time the planet itself appeared, surrounded by dozens of Imperial Star Destroyers maintaining an unbroken orbital cordon.

"The Emperor ordered a complete orbital blockade after the first widespread uprisings."

His expression darkened slightly.

"It fulfilled its military objective."

He hesitated.

"But it also trapped everyone."

With another gesture, the hologram zoomed toward several coastal kingdoms.

"The independent kingdoms once relied upon trade with neighboring systems."

"They can no longer replace damaged machinery."

"They cannot import medicine."

"They lack refined fuel."

"Their food reserves continue shrinking."

"But because our own supply network continues failing..."

The image changed.

Endless lines of civilians wrapped in thick furs waiting patiently with empty containers.

Children standing beside exhausted parents.

Arguments breaking out between hungry workers and Imperial officials.

Riots spreading through frozen streets.

Warehouses burning beneath black smoke.

Executions carried out in public squares.

Commander Wick's voice grew quieter.

"The result..."

He allowed the images to speak for themselves before finishing.

"...is starvation."

Even the officers watching the reports appeared uncomfortable. Not because they pitied the civilians. Imperial officers rarely thought in such terms.

Rather...

Hungry populations became desperate populations.

Desperate populations became dangerous populations.

Vader continued studying the burning settlements.

Hunger.

Fear.

Desperation.

Each emotion possessed value.

Each could be manipulated.

Each could become a weapon.

Yet only when properly directed.

Left alone...

His mechanical breathing echoed softly throughout the chamber.

"The clone troopers."

Commander Wick frowned immediately.

"They remain disciplined."

His jaw tightened slightly before he forced himself to continue.

"But..."

"They are losing."

Several officers visibly stiffened.

Admitting failure before Darth Vader required either extraordinary courage...

Or complete honesty.

Vader neither rebuked nor praised him.

Instead he spoke only a single word.

"Explain."

"This planet itself fights us."

He highlighted dozens of Imperial patrol routes.

"Our doctrine relies upon overwhelming force."

"The Imperial Army is designed for decisive engagements."

He touched another control.

Nearly every blue route disappeared beneath flashing storm symbols.

"Our walkers sink through hidden ice."

"Our repulsor craft malfunction during magnetic blizzards."

"Communications fail."

"Long-range scanners become useless."

"Our aircraft cannot see through these storms."

He allowed himself a humorless smile.

"And unfortunately..."

He glanced toward the reinforced windows where snow continued battering the fortress.

"...it is almost always snowing."

Another series of reports appeared.

Entire patrols listed as missing.

Scout teams frozen to death after becoming separated from their units.

Walkers swallowed by collapsing glaciers.

Engineering battalions unable to construct roads because the landscape itself changed every few days.

Meanwhile...

Red symbols representing local resistance forces appeared and disappeared constantly across the mountains.

"They know every frozen river."

"Every mountain trail."

"Every hidden valley."

"They strike only when victory is certain."

"And before reinforcements can arrive..."

He deactivated half the red markers.

"...they're gone."

Vader watched the display without interruption.

Imperial officers stood around the chamber in disciplined silence, waiting for the Dark Lord's judgment. The only sound that broke the stillness was the slow, mechanical rhythm of Vader's respirator.

Minutes passed before his gloved hand finally rose toward the hologram.

The image immediately changed.

The eighteen kingdoms of Kaiser appeared one after another, each outlined in glowing lines.

Nine shone blue.

Nine burned crimson.

The blue kingdoms had sworn allegiance to the Empire, though most had done so only after exhausting wars against their neighbors. The crimson kingdoms still rejected Imperial authority, their rulers continuing to rally resistance despite months of conflict.

Vader looked at them for several moments before speaking.

"We will not begin another offensive."

Several exchanged uncertain glances.

Commander Garrick himself looked genuinely confused.

"My Lord?"

Without answering immediately, Vader touched another control. The red territories faded into the background until only the nine Imperial-aligned kingdoms remained.

Several major cities glowed amber.

Vader pointed toward the first.

"Rebellion."

His hand moved across the map.

"Food shortages."

Another province.

"Civil unrest."

A fourth region.

"Corruption."

Then another.

"Bandit activity."

Only after allowing everyone to study the display did Vader slowly turn toward Garrick.

"If we conquer the remaining kingdoms while our allies collapse behind us..."

His voice remained calm, yet every word carried the weight of absolute certainty.

"...then we gain nothing."

Commander Garrick lowered his eyes to the map again.

"Our present holdings are unstable."

"Correct."

"The rulers cannot govern."

"They spend more time suppressing revolts than administering their kingdoms."

Vader enlarged one of the allied capitals.

"Our first objective is stability."

He looked around the chamber, making certain every officer understood.

"The rebel factions operating inside the loyal kingdoms will be eliminated."

"Their rulers will regain authority."

"Trade routes will reopen."

"Food distribution will resume."

"Only then..."

His crimson lenses settled upon the remaining independent kingdoms.

"...will further expansion possess value."

No one challenged the decision.

From a military standpoint, it was difficult to argue against.

Launching another campaign while their own territories threatened to implode would only stretch Imperial forces thinner.

Commander Garrick bowed respectfully.

"A wise strategy, my Lord."

Vader offered no reply.

He simply continued studying the map.

The commander believed he had reached this decision for purely military reasons. That assumption suited Vader perfectly. Because Garrick understood only half the truth.

The military objective mattered.

The political objective mattered far more.

Every ruler whose throne survived because Darth Vader had intervened...

Every noble family rescued from rebellion...

Every city spared from collapse through his advice...

Would remember him.

Not the Emperor.

Not the Imperial Senate.

Not the governors assigned by Coruscant.

They would remember Darth Vader.

Gratitude forged stronger chains than fear.

The lesson had not come from Darth Sidious.

It had come from Darth Zannah.

A Sith who ruled through fear alone eventually stood alone.

A Sith who inspired loyalty possessed something far more dangerous than obedience.

He possessed willing allies.

One day...

If fate demanded it...

Those alliances might decide the future of the Empire itself.

Vader dismissed the thought.

That day remained distant.

For now, Kaiser required order.

He turned toward Commander Garrick.

"Arrange meetings."

"My Lord?"

"With every ruler loyal to the Empire."

The commander blinked in surprise.

"Immediately."

Garrick recovered quickly and saluted.

"It shall be done."

Within minutes the communications division became the busiest section of the flagship.

Encrypted transmissions departed in every direction across the frozen world.

Royal palaces received priority messages.

Escort detachments prepared landing zones while local commanders hurried to reassure nervous nobles that Lord Vader's arrival was not an execution order.

The reactions varied dramatically.

Some rulers feared punishment.

Others expected impossible demands.

One aging king reportedly spent nearly an hour convincing himself that the Emperor had finally decided to remove him from power.

None refused the invitation.

No ruler on Kaiser possessed the courage—or the foolishness—to ignore Darth Vader.

By the following morning the first delegation had arrived.

King Hadrik of Frostholm entered the Imperial command fortress wearing a cloak of white wolf fur draped over polished steel armor. Time had left deep lines upon his weathered face, yet his blue eyes remained sharp.

He knelt before Vader.

"My Lord."

"You may rise."

The old king obeyed, though tension remained visible in every movement.

Vader did not begin with accusations.

Nor with demands.

Instead, he activated the tactical map once more.

"Show me your kingdom."

Hadrik hesitated.

"My Lord?"

"Your problems."

The request clearly surprised him. After a brief pause, he stepped toward the hologram.

"My fisheries remain productive," he began, highlighting the northern coast. "But the interior villages suffered poor harvests after last winter."

His finger moved farther south.

"Bandits have become increasingly bold."

Another region illuminated.

"Several nobles secretly finance the rebels."

He continued speaking for nearly half an hour.

Roads destroyed by sabotage.

Food caravans disappearing before reaching the capital.

Every problem that had slowly weakened his authority unfolded before Vader.

The Dark Lord interrupted only occasionally.

Each question struck directly at the heart of the issue.

By the time the meeting concluded, Hadrik no longer looked like a condemned man awaiting judgment.

Instead...

He looked like a ruler who had finally found someone willing to listen.

When he bowed before departing, his expression had changed completely.

"I believed this audience would end with threats."

Vader remained silent.

The old king smiled faintly.

"Instead..."

He lowered his head respectfully.

"...I leave with hope."

He turned and departed without another word.

Commander Garrick watched him disappear through the blast doors before glancing toward Vader.

"I have never seen him smile before."

Neither had the officers accompanying him.

Vader simply looked back toward the frozen world slowly rotating above the tactical table.

"Prepare the next audience."

The day had only begun.
