DESCRIPTION

The rhythmic hiss of machinery filled the medical chamber, blending seamlessly with the steady pulse of pumps hidden behind polished durasteel walls. Soft blue light shimmered throughout the room, reflected by the towering bacta tank that stood at its center like a monument to survival. The translucent cylinder glowed faintly as the medicinal fluid within it gently rippled, disturbed only by the slow circulation of countless microscopic filters.

Suspended motionless inside the tank floated Darth Vader.

His scarred body drifted in the healing liquid, held upright by invisible supports while breathing tubes and monitoring cables remained connected to the life-support mask covering what little remained of his face.

Around him, dozens of medical sensors continuously measured every aspect of his condition. Heart rate. Blood oxygen. Neural activity. Organ function. Every piece of information streamed silently across glowing displays where medical droids observed without emotion.

To anyone unfamiliar with Vader, the sight might have suggested a man gravely wounded after a recent battle.

Nothing could have been further from the truth.

For Darth Vader, this was routine.

Even after weeks of peace, he regularly spent hours submerged within the bacta tank. The healing fluid soothed damaged muscles, repaired countless microscopic tears within his ravaged flesh, and delayed the gradual deterioration caused by the injuries he had carried since Mustafar.

During those hours he meditated, allowing the Force to guide his thoughts while his body recovered from the endless burden imposed by the armored prison that kept him alive. There was no cure for what he had become.

The bacta could mend damaged tissue. It could slow decay. It could ease inflammation.

But it could never restore what had been lost.

Nothing could.

The memories came unbidden, as they always did whenever he floated in silence.

A river of fire.

Black volcanic sand.

The unbearable heat of molten lava.

He remembered the smell of burning flesh.

His own flesh.

He remembered crawling toward the riverbank with one remaining hand while flames consumed everything else. The agony had been beyond anything language could describe, yet even greater than the physical pain had been the realization that he had failed.

He had lost everything on Mustafar.

His limbs.

His strength.

His future.

Padmé.

The man named Anakin Skywalker had died there.

Only Darth Vader had crawled from the flames.

His meditation did not suppress those memories.

Instead, he embraced them.

The Dark Side demanded hatred.

Pain.

Loss.

Every memory strengthened his resolve. Every scar reminded him that weakness carried only one reward—destruction.

His consciousness drifted deeper into the Force.

He felt the fortress around him.

Thousands of minds moved through its corridors like distant stars scattered across the darkness. Clone troopers marched between barracks and hangars. Engineers worked inside machine shops where sparks danced through the air. Pilots completed final maintenance checks on their gunships while technicians loaded ammunition into walkers waiting inside enormous underground hangars.

Far beyond the fortress walls, he sensed an endless ocean of frozen wilderness stretched across Kaiser, its mountains buried beneath layers of snow. Blizzards swept endlessly across the valleys, hiding roads beneath fresh drifts each day before freezing them solid again by nightfall.

It was a brutal world.

The Force carried faint echoes of countless lives scattered across that frozen landscape.

Children huddled beside failing fires.

Hunters pursuing game through waist-deep snow.

Soldiers preparing for another campaign.

Their emotions drifted through the Force like whispers.

Fear.

Hope.

Hatred.

Determination.

Every one of them would soon become part of the coming battle.

Vader slowly opened his eyes.

The brilliant blue glow of the bacta surrounded him as he remained perfectly still, allowing the silence to linger for several more moments. Then, almost imperceptibly, the pumps surrounding the chamber changed rhythm.

The drainage cycle had begun.

The liquid level descended gradually, revealing more of his armored frame with every passing second. Bacta streamed away through concealed filters beneath the tank while warm air replaced the healing fluid.

Eventually his boots touched the floor.

The transparent cylinder separated down its center with a soft hydraulic hiss before sliding apart.

Cool air rushed across skin that had once been burned almost beyond recognition.

Vader stepped forward without hesitation.

Waiting for him outside the tank stood six medical droids, each already moving with flawless mechanical precision. Beside them rested a familiar suit of black armor mounted upon a reinforced assembly frame, every individual component positioned exactly where it would be needed.

Several technicians stood farther back, carefully avoiding direct eye contact.

They had spent weeks constructing the armor before them.

Months working beneath the strictest secrecy imaginable.

Months knowing that if Darth Sidious ever discovered what they were building, every one of them would die.

Immediately the medical droids began their work.

Artificial legs, far more sophisticated than those of an ordinary prosthetic, aligned perfectly with the connection ports embedded within his ruined body. Magnetic clamps locked into place before microscopic neural connectors synchronized with his nervous system. Confirmation lights shifted from amber to green.

Next came the armored boots and greaves, followed by the reinforced codpiece and lower torso assembly.

Each component sealed seamlessly against the next.

The chest armor followed.

Heavy black plating enclosed his torso while the life-support systems connected to the breathing apparatus already secured around his face. Pumps activated almost silently, circulating cooled air through filters designed specifically for his damaged lungs.

The shoulder armor settled into place.

Mechanical gauntlets enclosed his remaining flesh before locking around his cybernetic arms with a series of precise metallic clicks.

Finally, one of the droids lifted the helmet.

For a brief instant, the room remained completely silent.

Then the mask descended over his scarred face.

Compressed air flowed into the respirator.

Darkness vanished.

The world returned through crimson lenses.

The familiar rhythm of mechanical breathing echoed throughout the chamber.

Vader remained perfectly still.

For several long moments, he simply listened to his own breathing while flexing the fingers of his right hand. He slowly rotated one wrist before taking several measured steps across the chamber.

The movement felt...

Natural.

Almost effortless.

After his talk with Darth Zannah, Vader approached his followers with an ambitious proposal.

His armor, though formidable, possessed numerous engineering flaws. At first glance they appeared to be simple oversights, compromises made during its rushed construction after Mustafar.

Closer examination had revealed a far more disturbing truth.

They were deliberate.

Every weakness had been carefully designed.

Every limitation intentionally included.

Darth Sidious had not merely created a life-support system.

He had built a prison.

Vader remembered studying the technical reports hidden within encrypted data cores assembled by Wick's engineers.

Power relays vulnerable to electrical surges.

Cooling systems deliberately operating below optimal efficiency.

Servo limiters restricting movement far beyond what his cybernetics could actually withstand.

Even the constant pain generated by the neural interfaces...

Intentional.

The Emperor had wanted his apprentice to suffer.

Pain fed anger.

Anger strengthened the Dark Side.

It was cruel.

And entirely characteristic of Darth Sidious.

Vader had accepted that pain for years because he believed there had been no alternative.

The armor he wore today appeared identical to the original in every visible respect.

The same intimidating silhouette.

The same polished black finish.

The same breathing apparatus.

Even experienced Imperial engineers would struggle to distinguish one suit from the other without dismantling both piece by piece.

Internally, however, they shared almost nothing.

Every component had been redesigned.

Every weakness addressed.

Multiple redundant power systems ensured that catastrophic failures would no longer cripple the entire suit. Advanced insulation protected vital circuitry from electrical attacks that had once threatened to leave him helpless before his Master. Cooling systems operated at peak efficiency while new servomotors responded almost instantly to every neural impulse.

Most importantly...

The pain was gone.

The scars of Mustafar would remain with him until death.

His damaged lungs still labored with every breath.

His ruined flesh would never become whole again.

But the relentless agony created by the suit itself had disappeared.

For the first time in decades, wearing the armor did not feel like climbing back into a torture device.

It simply felt...

Comfortable.

He closed one mechanical hand into a fist.

No stabbing pain followed the movement.

Beneath the black mask, unseen by anyone else in the chamber, the faintest hint of satisfaction touched his scarred features.

It was a rare expression.

One that had not appeared upon his face in many years.

A soft chime echoed through the room as a sphere of blue light expanded into the air before resolving into a detailed three-dimensional map of northern Kaiser. Mountain ranges rose from the projection like jagged teeth, while frozen rivers wound their way through snow-covered valleys.

The officers and engineers who had remained in the chamber instinctively stepped closer. Although few of them would have any direct role in the coming operation, every one of them understood that they were witnessing the final briefing for a campaign that could alter the course of the war in the north.

Wick manipulated the display with practiced movements.

Several new icons appeared.

One enormous cargo transport.

Four escort gunships.

Eight heavy cargo haulers.

Fuel carriers.

Medical transports.

Armored personnel carriers.

From above, it appeared to be nothing more than another Imperial resupply convoy.

"The convoy departs in fifty-eight minutes," Wick began. "Its destination is Mine Complex Forty-Two, with scheduled stops at three isolated garrisons along the Frost River."

He glanced toward Vader before continuing.

"And we made certain that information reached the right people."

Another gesture enlarged several blinking red symbols hidden within nearby villages and mountain settlements.

"Our intelligence division identified seven rebel informants embedded inside local labor forces and merchant caravans. Rather than removing them, we have quietly allowed them to continue their work."

A faint smile touched the commander's lips.

"They have already reported the convoy."

One of the clone officers folded his arms.

"They believe they've discovered another weakly protected supply line."

The hologram shifted once more.

This time the projected cargo transports became transparent, revealing what actually lay inside.

Rows upon rows of clone troopers sat concealed within specially constructed compartments hidden behind cargo.

Entire platoons waited behind stacks of ration crates.

Heavy repeating blasters rested beneath pallets of medical supplies.

Even the fuel transports concealed squads of soldiers beneath armored flooring.

"The food is genuine," Wick explained.

The hologram zoomed farther inward.

One transport appeared larger than the others.

Its interior contained a reinforced command compartment surrounded by thick layers of armor plating.

Wick looked directly at Vader.

"Your transport."

Silence settled across the room.

The officers understood immediately.

The true weapon traveling through the mountains would be Darth Vader himself.

Wick continued his explanation.

"In total, nearly two hundred clone troopers will be concealed throughout the convoy."

"One battalion of battle droids will accompany them."

Several officers exchanged impressed glances.

Vader studied every detail without speaking.

His crimson gaze moved slowly across the projected route, committing every mountain pass, the frozen river crossing, and every narrow valley to memory.

Kaiser was unlike most worlds he had conquered. Traditional military doctrine rarely applied here. The endless snowfields prevented large-scale maneuver warfare.

"The attack will come here."

Vader's gloved finger touched a narrow mountain pass carved between towering cliffs.

Every eye in the room followed his gesture.

Commander Wick nodded immediately.

Another officer activated additional terrain data.

"The valley is less than two hundred meters wide at its narrowest point. High cliffs dominate both sides."

"Perfect for an ambush," one clone commander observed.

"They can seal both exits with explosives."

"Attack from elevated positions."

"Disappear before reinforcements arrive."

Vader remained silent for a moment before speaking.

"They have done this before."

The commander enlarged another series of reports.

"Every successful rebel convoy attack during the past eleven months occurred inside terrain almost identical to this."

He highlighted several locations.

"They will not change tactics."

"They don't need to," Wick answered. "Until recently, their strategy worked."

The commander hesitated briefly before adding,

"They believe we're still fighting the same war."

A faint silence followed.

That statement carried more truth than most realized.

Commander Wick deactivated several layers of the hologram before turning toward him.

"My Lord..."

His tone carried a trace of hesitation.

Several officers glanced toward one another.

They already suspected what the commander intended to say.

"You do not need to accompany the convoy."

Wick continued carefully.

"The operation will succeed without your presence."

He gestured toward the troop deployments displayed above the projector.

"Our clone commanders are experienced."

"The battle droids will reinforce every defensive position."

"There is no reason to expose yourself to unnecessary danger."

Several officers nodded in silent agreement.

One elderly engineer shifted uncomfortably before finally gathering enough courage to speak.

"My Lord... if something unforeseen happens..."

He immediately lowered his head, clearly regretting opening his mouth.

"...the Empire cannot afford to lose you."

Only the rhythmic breathing of Darth Vader echoed through the chamber.

Commander Wick watched him carefully.

He had served alongside Vader long enough to recognize that the Dark Lord was considering every word before answering.

Eventually...

Vader spoke.

"No."

The response was calm.

Yet it carried such absolute certainty that no one even considered arguing.

Without another word, Vader turned away from the holographic display and walked slowly toward the enormous viewport overlooking the fortress.

The chamber had been carved directly into the mountainside, allowing an uninterrupted view across the frozen wilderness beyond.

Then, without looking back, he finally spoke.

"A commander who hides behind walls..."

His deep mechanical voice echoed softly through the chamber.

"...is unworthy of command."

No one moved.

Outside, another gust of snow struck the transparent durasteel like a white tidal wave before vanishing into the endless storm.

"My soldiers bleed."

His voice remained calm.

"My soldiers freeze."

Below, another company of clone troopers disappeared into waiting transports.

"My soldiers die."

Only then did Vader slowly turn to face the officers behind him.

The crimson glow of his lenses swept across every face in the room.

"If I expect them to face death..."

He allowed the sentence to linger.

"...then I will face it beside them."

The words were not spoken dramatically.

There was no attempt to inspire.

No speech worthy of history books.

It was simply a statement of fact.

Commander Garrick Wick felt something tighten in his chest.

He had served beneath countless officers throughout his military career.

Many had demanded absolute loyalty while remaining safely behind fortified headquarters.

Darth Vader was different.

He asked his soldiers to endure hardship because he endured it himself.

He expected sacrifice because he sacrificed even more.

It was no wonder the clone troopers had begun following him with almost religious devotion.

Wick lowered his head.

"As you command, my Lord."

Around him, every officer instinctively straightened their posture.

Not because Vader had ordered them to.

Because they wanted to.
