The Power of Line and Tone - A Pencil and Ink Workshop
The greatness of the Old Masters was rooted not only in their ability but in their strategy—they approached big projects like research endeavors that required attentive study. This workshop will focus on the timeless drawing methods the masters used to prepare for challenging projects: drawing in line and drawing in tone. In the first lesson, we’ll investigate proportions using graphite pencil, setting the stage for a strong, well-organized composition. In the following lesson, we’ll switch to brush and ink to explore values, training your eye to see light, shadow, and form with greater clarity. In the third lesson, we’ll dive into advanced mark making techniques—concepts I’ve been thinking about a lot recently, and I’m excited to share my takeaways with you. These techniques don’t just prepare you for one project; they transform how you see shapes and value relationships, improving your drawing and painting skills. It’s a game-changer for anyone looking to level up both their planning and execution.
