Workshop Overview:In this series, we’ll be making a copy of one of my favorite paintings of all time: Mars Resting by the greatest painter ever, Diego Velázquez. So exciting! Each session will guide you through a different stage of the painting process, with each layer approached using specific techniques and mindsets tailored to its role in the overall buildup. By following these steps, you won’t just complete an ambitious master copy, you’ll also gain hands-on experience with methods you can bring into your own creative practice.
You don’t have to paint along to benefit. This workshop also includes theoretical analysis and guided observation of Velázquez’s technique. We’ll train our eyes to detect subtle clues left behind in the paint, learning how to decode a painting’s construction by reading the brushwork, layering, and surface effects.
The final lesson will be a feedback session, where you’ll be invited to submit your Velázquez copy anonymously and receive guidance and advice from me. Can’t wait to see what you make!
