Nolan had been assigned to remain with Daniel Adler.
At first, he expected it to be boring. He was still a rookie. Sitting inside a billionaire’s apartment while detectives and his fellow officers handled the real investigation was not how he wanted to spend the day, or possibly the next several days.
That opinion changed almost immediately.
When Nolan arrived, he found Daniel and Richard Castle working the case.
Within ten minutes, Nolan was working it with them.
He had not spent much time with Daniel, but he already liked the young man. Daniel was polite, surprisingly easy to talk to, and nothing like the arrogant Hollywood tyrant described by half the internet when Nolan had tried to research him.
Even Henry had opinions about Daniel, most of them based on stories and videos he had seen online. Nolan was beginning to suspect that very few of those stories had much to do with the man himself.
Castle tapped the first ransom letter.
“Everything about this feels personal.”
Daniel looked up from the employee records.
Castle pointed to the first line.
“‘You took everything from me.’ This person wants you to know that they blame you for something.”
Daniel nodded.
“So, someone from my past.”
“Someone who believes you ruined them,” Castle said. “Maybe you did. Maybe you didn’t. What matters is that they believe it.”
Nolan leaned against the edge of the table.
“We should make a list of your enemies.”
Daniel looked between them.
“I don’t have that many.”
Nolan raised an eyebrow.
“You’re one of the most powerful people in Hollywood.”
“That doesn’t automatically mean I have a notebook full of enemies.”
Castle pulled an empty sheet of paper toward him.
Daniel sat back and thought about it.
“Right now, the only person openly praying for my downfall is an executive at Lucasfilm, but I don’t think he would arrange something like this.”
Castle picked up a pen.

Daniel’s expression shifted.

His respect for Daniel had already been growing. Now it rose sharply.
Daniel shrugged. “He was a bad man. There are still others like him, but he was one of the biggest in the industry. Some very brave people were willing to stand against him. I just gave them the resources to finish their fight.”
Castle looked genuinely stunned.
“Why haven’t you told anyone?”
“Because no one needs to know.”
“Daniel, this is enormous.”
“The matter is settled. He’s in prison. The people who came forward deserve the credit, not me.”
Castle leaned back.
“Wow.”
Nolan nodded slowly.
He had met wealthy people before, though not many on Daniel’s level. Most wanted everyone to know when they donated money or helped someone. They wanted headlines, public gratitude.
Daniel had done something that could have made him a hero, then kept his name out of it.
“Anyone else?” Castle asked. “Do you plan to solve world hunger too?”
Daniel laughed.
Nolan joined him.
“No,” Daniel said. “Although I have bought a lot of farmland recently.”
Castle stared at him.
“What ....It’s a good investment.”
Daniel smiled and looked back at the empty sheet of paper.
“There’s an executive at Netflix, one guy from Warner, and another from Universal.”
Castle wrote down each one.

Nolan had played along earlier, insisting that he and Castle did not look alike. Up close, however, the resemblance was impossible to ignore.
Same eyes. Same nose. Same smile.
They looked at each other.
Then they both looked away.
Castle cleared his throat.
“So, what do you think the chances are?”
“Of what?”
“That we were separated at birth.”
Nolan glanced at him again.
“It’s weird.”
“Extremely.”
