DESCRIPTION

Moridun had been the Sorcerer Supreme of the Fifth Cosmos.

It was within that iteration of the multiverse that magic and sorcery first took recognizable form. There were no sciences as later universes would understand them. Creation operated through ritual, sacrifice, and words powerful enough to alter reality when spoken correctly.

Civilizations built their worlds through magic. They crossed the void in vessels bound together by sorcery.

Among all the magicians of that strange, dark cosmos, Moridun rose higher than any other. He mastered disciplines that would not survive into the Sixth and Seventh Cosmoses. He learned the secret names of dead dimensions, bound gods with his power, and reshaped the laws of magic whenever they limited him.

By the end, there was no sorcerer in existence who could challenge him. There was nothing left for him to learn.

Until he discovered something that sorcery could not explain.

The Emotional Spectrum.

At first, Moridun found only traces. Fleeting currents of color appeared around powerful acts of rage, fear, hope, compassion, avarice, love, and will. The energies did not behave like magic. They required no spell, bargain, or sacrifice. They arose naturally from living minds and passed through creation according to laws Moridun could not identify.

That uncertainty became an obsession.

A wiser sorcerer might have studied the Spectrum cautiously across the ages, learning its boundaries before attempting to cross them.

Moridun had never been wise where power was concerned.

He forced his way deeper.

He tore through layer after layer of reality, following the colors toward whatever foundation sustained them. He believed that if he reached their origin, he could tame every emotion in existence and remake the multiverse according to his will.

What he failed to understand was that every force within the cosmic hierarchy possessed an opposite. If the One Above All existed, then somewhere beneath creation there had to be a One Below All.

If the House of Ideas stood beyond the highest reaches of reality, then its opposite had to exist beneath everything. The Below-Place. The final depth from which nothing should return.

And if the Source gave birth to emotion, identity, possibility, and the will to live, then there had to be something opposed to it.

Moridun stumbled into that opposite.

Anti-Life.

It was not merely death. Death was still part of existence. A dead thing had once lived. It carried memory, meaning, and the consequences of what it had been.

Anti-Life was the denial that any of those things had ever mattered.

Moridun reached through Anti-Life and discovered the Black Light.

Black was not another emotion within the Spectrum. It was what remained when emotion had been extinguished. It was the silence after the final thought, the emptiness left when identity, desire, memory, and possibility had all been erased.

Every living being carried the potential for death.

That universal possibility gave the Black Light a path into existence.

Moridun should have fled. Instead, he believed he had discovered a power greater than the Emotional Spectrum itself.

He harnessed it, and for the first time, he forced open a passage through which the Black Spectrum could act independently within creation.

The result had two consequences.

The first was subtle. A portion of the Black Spectrum attached itself to the cosmic concept of Death. Not because Death commanded it, but because she represented the boundary through which all living beings eventually passed. The connection was incomplete, little more than a thread, yet it allowed the Black Light to recognize death as a path into the physical multiverse.

The second consequence was impossible to contain.

The remaining Black Spectrum poured into the Fifth Cosmos without intelligence, restraint, or purpose.

It became the Black Winter.

It possessed no hatred and sought no conquest. It was the Black Spectrum reduced to its simplest instinct, spreading through existence and extinguishing everything it touched.

Stars went dark.

Magic failed.

The Black Winter consumed the Fifth Cosmos.

Moridun vanished with it, swallowed by the force he had believed he could control.

Then came the Sixth Cosmos.

Several Celestials survived the transition between universes. They carried memories of the Black Winter and understood that the destruction of the Fifth Cosmos had not ended it.

The Black Spectrum could not be destroyed.

Its roots reached into Anti-Life itself, into a depth of reality that even the Celestials could not fully comprehend. So long as living beings could die, the possibility of the Black Light would remain.

The Celestials chose another solution.

They would create a custodian.

A being capable of containing the Black Spectrum and preventing the Black Winter from ever developing intelligence or purpose.

They searched the darkness between creations and found Knull.

He already existed comfortably within the void separating the death of the Sixth Cosmos from the birth of the Seventh. He possessed a natural affinity for emptiness and hated the light that intruded upon it.

The Celestials believed that made him suitable.

They altered him.

They connected him to the Black Spectrum and named him the King in Black, intending for him to become its cosmic custodian.

His purpose was simple.

Contain the Black Light.

Prevent the Black Winter from awakening as a conscious force.

Guard the boundary between death and Anti-Life.

Knull rejected the duty.

Once he learned what the Black Spectrum was, he did not wish to contain it. He wished to possess it.

He seized the Black Light and shaped it according to his hatred. From that darkness, he forged the first Necrosword, a living weapon cut from the substance of the Black Spectrum itself.

Then he turned it upon the Celestials.

Knull’s war against the Celestials raged through the darkness before the Seventh Cosmos had properly formed. Countless Celestials fell to the Necrosword. Those who survived fought together, but Knull had become too powerful.

He was no longer merely a creature of the abyss. The Black Spectrum flowed through him, giving intelligence and direction to a force that had once destroyed an entire cosmos without either.

Unable to defeat him alone, the Celestials reached toward the Source.

With their combined power, they attempted to open a pathway into the Source itself. When they failed, the One Above All intervened, helping them open a gateway through which they called Ion into the physical realm.

The Entity of Will answered, and began to battle Knull.

Black and green light filled the emptiness before creation. Ion fought with the will of every life that would ever refuse to end. The King in Black could not overpower it.

Ion broke the Necrosword, defeated Knull, and held him long enough for the surviving Celestials to imprison him within the Abyss itself.

The violence of their battle shook the unborn universe.

Matter erupted outward.

Light crossed the emptiness.

Space and time began expanding from the point where the two cosmic forces had collided.

Their battle became the spark of the Big Bang.

The Seventh Cosmos was born.

But the victory carried a consequence.

During the final clash between Ion and Knull, something was severed from Ion.

A fragment of emerald power broke away from the entity and fell into the newborn universe.

A fragment that would become...

Max opened his eyes.

He remained within the Source, surrounded by endless currents of green light.

Ion’s memories continued moving through him, more vivid than anything he had ever experienced. Intense did not begin to describe it.

He had caused the fucking Big Bang. That was one hell of a conversation starter.

He had remained within the Source far longer than during any previous session. At first, remaining there had nearly torn him apart.

Now he had found a balance.

Max no longer fought Ion’s vastness. He allowed its memories, instincts, and immense awareness to become part of his own without surrendering the experiences that had shaped him as a man. He was Max. He was Ion. Neither truth needed to erase the other.

Adara’s presence made the process easier.

The Entity of Hope remained near him through much of the work, speaking when he wanted company and leaving him in silence when he needed to concentrate. With her beside him, the endless expanse of the Source no longer felt quite so empty.

They were not alone.

There were others as well.

Every entity desired access to the gateway Max was forming between the Source and the Central Power Battery. There were other ways for them to enter physical reality, but those paths were difficult and uncertain.

Proselyte had already discovered one.

The Entity of Compassion had hidden herself somewhere within the vastness of the Source, concealing both her location and the route she was using to influence the physical world. Max could sense her occasionally, little more than a distant indigo presence moving beyond his reach.

The Butcher, Parallax, the Predator, and Ophidian had not found such a hidden path.

The Battery offered them an easier one.

Each time Max strengthened the gateway, allowing it to channel enough green energy to sustain more rings, their attention sharpened.

The Butcher had approached him first.

The Entity of Rage had chosen the form of a monstrous ape. Heavy horns curved from its skull, while long claws extended from its hands. Red fire burned beneath its dark hide, spilling from its eyes and mouth whenever it spoke.

It did not attempt subtlety.

It dragged memories of Max’s family into the Source and twisted them against him.

Firehair and Aurora dying. His friends falling one by one.

The Butcher forced him to relive each loss and whispered that grief was only rage denied its proper form. It promised him strength if Max severed his bond with Ion and surrendered himself to red.

Max refused.

The Predator had been more deceptive.

It first appeared wearing Firehair’s face.

Max recognized the lie almost immediately. The creature understood love, but only as hunger, possession, and the refusal to release what had been claimed.

When Max exposed the deception, the false shape dissolved. The Predator revealed a womanly figure formed from violet light. Curved horns rose from her head, and sharp wings spread behind her. Her beauty remained, but it had become something dangerous. She embodied love stripped of restraint, the point where devotion became obsession and affection became ownership.

She wanted Max because part of her had been born from him.

That alone was enough for her to believe he belonged to her.

Then there was Parallax.

Their conversations were usually brief.

The Entity of Fear knew Max had defeated it before. All the entities understood that he had traveled backward through time and carried memories of the future.

Parallax tried to use that knowledge against him once.

It showed Max a universe ruled through fear. In the vision, Max sat upon a throne at the center of creation, with the Yellow Lanterns as his eternal army of enforcers. Entire universes were his to rule.

There was peace.

No wars. No disorder. No rebellion.

Only terror.

“You feared losing them more than you loved them,” Parallax had said. “You feared Ion. You feared eternity. Every choice you made began with fear.”

Max had rejected the vision.

“I overcame all of it,” he told the creature. “I have no need for you.”

Parallax had not spoken to him since.

Adara drifted closer, blue light spreading around her many wings.

“This is the longest you have remained here.”

Max looked toward the gateway.

It had grown considerably. What had once been a thin thread leading to the Battery was now a stable opening surrounded by layers of emerald energy. The connection was still small compared to the vastness of the Source, but enough power passed through it to sustain thousands of rings.

“I think I finally found the balance,” Max said. “I’m Ion, and Ion is me.”

Adara smiled, though concern remained in her eyes.

“I am glad.”

“The others are plotting something,” she added in a more serious tone.

Max sensed movement. Red gathered in one direction. Yellow shifted farther away, nearly hidden within the currents. Violet moved between them, restless and uncertain.

“I know,” he said.

“Even Ophidian has been seen near the gateway.”

That bothered him more.

Ophidian had remained distant throughout Max’s sessions. The Entity of Avarice watched everything but rarely approached. Orange light twisted around itself in the distance, forever grasping at anything nearby while refusing to share even the smallest part of itself.

“Parallax, the Butcher, and the Predator are preparing to attack,” Max said. “What Ophidian wants, I don’t know.”

“Parallax and the Butcher cannot be permitted to reach the Battery.”

“They won’t.”

Adara’s wings folded closer around her.

“They cannot…”

“I won’t let them.”

The attack came from behind.

Max felt the Source distort and moved before the first strike reached him. Three forces crossed the place where he had been standing.

Red claws tore through the green currents.

Yellow jaws snapped shut around emptiness.

Violet fire spread between them, trying to cut off his escape.

Adara turned sharply.

“What are you doing?”

The Butcher landed upon nothing, its massive body shaking with fury.

“You know exactly what we are doing.”

Parallax’s serpentine form coiled around the gateway. Yellow scales covered a body that stretched beyond sight, while a many-toothed mouth opened beneath burning eyes.

“We deserve freedom,” the Butcher roared.

“You deserve nothing,” Max said.

Parallax lunged.

Max met it with a punch.

Green light erupted from his fist and struck the entity across the head, sending the colossal serpent tumbling through the Source. Before it could recover, Max formed chains around its neck and body.

The chains shattered, and Parallax surged forward again.

Max was already moving.

Adara did not fight the Butcher or the Predator directly. She slipped between their attacks. Each time the Butcher struck, hope weakened its rage for a moment, but Adara refused to answer violence with violence.

The Predator circled her, attempting to bind her wings.

“You protect one who would imprison us,” the violet entity said.

The Butcher raised both arms and brought them down.

Max caught its wrists.

The force of the impact sent red and green energy exploding through the Source. Max held on, twisted, and threw the massive entity away from Adara.

The Butcher roared as it disappeared into the red currents of the Source.

Adara came to Max’s side and wrapped both arms around him from behind.

Blue light joined green.

Their combined power spread outward in a wave, stabilizing the gateway and driving Parallax back before it could strike again.

The Predator hovered across from them.

Its demonic shape flickered.

Max looked at her.

“Have you made your choice?”

The Predator’s horns receded.

The sharp wings folded into her body, and the monstrous details of her form softened until she resembled a woman.

She nodded.

The Butcher returned with a scream.

Parallax attacked beside it.

The Predator turned against them.

Violet light struck Parallax’s side, forcing the serpent away from the gateway. Adara extended her wings and released a burst of blue energy into the Butcher’s chest. Max followed with both hands, driving a wall of emerald force through the red entity.

The Butcher dug its claws into the red currents beneath it, but the combined attack pushed it back.

“You betray us!” it roared at the Predator.

Parallax remained silent. It only glared at Max.

The three allied entities moved around the gateway.

Green light formed the first layer.

Blue strengthened it.

Violet bound the two together.

A shield closed around the gateway, separating it from the rest of the Source. The barrier became a sphere, its surface shifting between emerald, sapphire, and violet as each entity added its power.

Parallax struck it. The shield held. The Butcher attacked with both claws, screaming as red fire spread across its surface.

The barrier did not break.

Then another sphere formed around the two hostile entities.

Green chains crossed the inside of the prison. Blue light hardened them against despair and fear. Violet energy wrapped around each link, refusing to release what it had taken.

The Butcher hurled itself against the walls, and the sphere began to move.

It carried both entities away from the gateway, pushing them deeper into isolated regions of the Source where they could no longer reach the Battery.

The Butcher continued raging.

“I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE!”

Parallax did not waste its strength.

It remained coiled inside the prison, its yellow eyes fixed upon Max until distance and shifting currents hid it from sight.

Silence returned.

Max lowered his hands.

“It’s over.”

“For now,” the Predator said.

Before leaving, she looked directly at Max. “Remember your part of the bargain.”

“I will.”

The Predator studied him for another moment, then vanished into the violet currents.

Adara remained beside Max. “I do not like fighting.”

“Sometimes it’s necessary.”

“That does not make it good.”

“No,” Max agreed. “But we did something good here.”

Adara looked toward the protected gateway.

After a moment, she nodded.

Something moved near them, and Max sensed it too late.

Ophidian erupted from the currents without warning.

The Entity of Avarice appeared as a vast dragon of orange flame, its body curling around itself as though even the space it occupied had to be possessed. Its jaws opened as it struck Max.

“Ion!” Adara cried.

Max raised an arm, but Ophidian did not attempt to bite or crush him.

Its power passed through his chest.

“MINE!”

Orange light flared inside Max.

Something tore free.

It was only a trace, a thin current of orange energy buried so deeply within him that Max had never realized it was there. Ophidian seized it, recoiled from Adara’s blue light, and disappeared into the endless Source.

Max stared after it.

“What was that?”

Adara rushed to his side.

“I do not know,” she said. “Ophidian removed a fragment of orange light from you.”

“Orange…”

Max looked down at himself.

The stars beneath his emerald skin shifted.

Something had changed.

Not within Ion.

Within the connection leading to his physical body.

The ring.

Realization struck him.

“I need to go.”

Adara looked toward the gateway. “What is it?”

“I don’t know yet. I’ll be back soon.”

He closed his eyes and concentrated on the path leading through the Battery.

The Source collapsed around him.

His awareness rushed through the gateway and back into his physical body, which waited near Oa’s core.

Max opened his eyes inside the Central Power Battery.

The chamber glowed brighter than ever before. Green energy surged through every channel and vanished into the immense structure surrounding him.

He barely noticed.

His attention fixed on the ring on his finger.

Its surface glowed as it had before his battle with Rom. The ring was back at one hundred percent.

“Jade?” Max asked.

For a moment, there was no answer.

Then a familiar voice spoke inside his mind.

“What took you so long?”
