A relatively normal cross country road trip gone wrong...but how could it have even gone this wrong? You expect to pop a tire or run out of gas in an inconvenient place, or somebody gets sick and you have to hole up in a motel...you don't expect to start changing into foxes.
At least you were all becoming rather cute foxes, with big ears and nice little snouts.
You didn't know it yet, but you'd soon find out that the problem was bigger than yourselves, which was some small consolation. The attendant was also a fox, as was his stoner friend at the register...as was the motorist who crashed his car into a pole nearby, due to his paws no longer being able to reach the pedals...
