DESCRIPTION

Ayu felt it before she saw it.

A thinning.

A slack in the field.

Four threads snapped.

Three Knights collapsed into blood.

One Spawn faltered mid-lunge and melted into red slurry.

For a fraction of a breath, the battlefield looked like it could be won. Alonso had done it!

Ayu’s grin flared bright and fierce.

Her rhythm surged in her chest, fire-song rising instinctively as she stepped forward, ready to turn that opening into a kill.

Then she noticed it.

Alonso stood beneath the warped trunk, close enough for the oak’s bark-grain to twist around him like a face watching from within the wood.

His posture held, blades ready.

Yet something about him felt wrong.

A delay in his breath.

A fraction too still.

Ayu’s smile faded as her instincts tightened.

She had seen Alonso dance through impossible angles.

She had seen him cut through pressure like it was air.

Now his movement carried a drag, as if the world had turned sticky around him.

She saw him flinch.

A tiny stiffening through his shoulders that did not belong to him.

Then his head turned.

His eyes were open, yet the light inside them was gone.

They looked wrong.

Hollow.

Ayu’s stomach dropped.

“Alo…” she started, and her voice came out harsher than she meant.

Then the scythes moved.

Fourteen executioner arcs descended together, and the air screamed under their speed.

Ayu’s body reacted before her mind finished naming what she had seen.

Her feet cratered the torn ground.

Fire flared from her lungs like a chant made flesh.

Her rhythm snapped into a faster tempo, pulse after pulse driving through her limbs.

She launched.

The hill blurred beneath her, blood-sap mist whipping past her cheeks.

A scythe curved toward Alonso’s shoulder.

He shifted half a step too late.

The blade connected.

Ayu saw his body jolt as his entire right arm tore free.

Blood burst outward in a violent spray.

He tried to turn mid-air to answer the next arc, and that was when she saw it again.

His eyes.

Empty.

Like Maerwyn’s sockets had reached into him and scooped something out.

Ayu’s heart clenched.

Fury rose with it.

Seeing him like this made something inside her snap cleanly.

She hit the space between him and the killing arcs with a soundless scream.

Her heel whipped upward and crashed into the first scythe’s curve, deflecting it by brute rhythm and Will.

Her elbow followed, a tight, vicious strike that shattered a sap-forged blade forming near the trunk into fragments that sprayed across her face like hot rain.

She landed in front of him, stance wide, breath burning.

The wolf-faced Spawn surged in, daggers carving inward in mirrored lines.

Ayu slid under the first, shoulder brushing the ground, and drove a knee up into its ribs.

The construct detonated into crimson mist.

It reformed in the same instant, rope at its neck tightening as blood pulled upward.

She felt Maerwyn’s pressure slam into her like a wall.

The domain pressed into her lungs.

It tried to crush the rhythm inside her, to slow it, to extinguish it.

She answered with fire.

Her song flared brighter, pulsing through her bones, forcing her limbs to move even as the field tried to turn them to stone.

Two scythes came for her at once.

She kicked one aside and twisted her torso to let the other skim along her shoulder instead of biting through her neck.

Pain flashed.

She swallowed it and kept moving.

Another arc descended.

Another.

The world became a grid of blades.

Ayu’s body moved on tempo alone, dodging by hair-widths, deflecting by fractions, her fire-song turning into a furious drumbeat that refused to stop.

A scythe tip clipped her thigh.

A line of heat ripped through her leg.

Her knee dipped.

The pressure doubled.

The next swing came too fast.

Too close.

Ayu’s eyes widened as she braced for impact.

CLANG!

Stormlight cut across her right flank in a burst of white-blue.

Leonie slammed into position beside her, shield raised, sword angled, wings flaring as the Valkyrie’s presence reasserted itself like a commander planting a banner in blood-soaked ground.

Feathers and crows flickered through the air around her, stormlight spilling across the torn hill.

“Press,” Leonie snapped, and the word carried weight.

Ayu felt it.

The battlefield tightening.

Lines of engagement pulling into shape.

The Emperor’s sovereign pressure layered behind Leonie’s stance, and the very air seemed to draw straight under her command.

Another scythe crashed into Leonie’s shield.

BOOM!

The ground fractured beneath them.

Leonie’s boots skidded half a meter, armour ringing, jaw tight.

Ayu watched her swallow the recoil and keep her stance.

Imani arrived a moment later.

His shield drove into the scythe arcs and his hammer followed, detonating against a Knight that had fallen to his pull.

Guardian Star flared.

The remaining four Knights shuddered as gravity dragged them off rhythm and into Imani’s orbit.

Pablo’s summon surged from below, metallic tendrils coiling around deflected scythes and anchoring them into the earth.

The bindings strained, snapped, reformed, then strained again.

Every interruption broke Maerwyn’s pattern for a heartbeat.

Chiara’s discharge tore past from the rear in a concussive blast that shattered sap-born blades mid-formation and ripped open a corridor of space in front of the oak.

Ayu did not look back.

She felt the heat of it.

Felt the fight tightening around them like a fist.

She kept her body between Alonso and the incoming attacks.

He stood behind her, barely moving, eyes hollow, breath faint but present, his remaining blade angled forward.

His presence felt distant, as if he hovered between life and death, refusing to fall through nothing but sheer will.

Ayu felt her heart constrict at the sight of him.

Her teeth ground together, jaw trembling for a fraction of a second before she forced it still.

The fury rising in her chest had nowhere to go except forward.

She turned it into fire.

Swallowed it down.

Let it burn hotter instead of breaking her, because if she lost control now, they would both fall.

Leonie’s eyes flickered toward Alonso for a single, measured beat.

Her jaw hardened.

We need to cut the remaining fingers,” she pulsed through the link, the command snapping through all of them at once.

She knew the hand itself would be the ideal target, but its sheer thickness and the density of Will shielding it made it nearly impossible to breach. Only the thinner fingers offered a viable opening.

Ayu moved with her in the same instant, their strides falling into rhythm as if guided by a shared pulse.

Ayu’s kick snapped upward and deflected a descending scythe.

Leonie’s blade followed, carving cleanly through a blood-thread as it tightened.

Imani hammered the ground, dragging the Knights and Spawns away from their flank.

Pablo’s tendrils caught a Spawn’s weapon and tore it sideways at the moment it mattered.

Chiara detonated another blast that cracked bark and sent sap raining down in heavy sheets.

The battlefield glowed crimson for a breath.

Leonie moved through the hard-earned opening.

She reached the branch-arm in two decisive strides, boots crushing splintered bark beneath her weight.

Her blade sheared through two fingers in a shower of splinters and blackened sap.

Threads snapped.

Two blood-forged warriors, one Knight and one Spawn, convulsed and collapsed into pools.

Hope surged again.

The pressure thinned. The threads snapped. The oak bled.

They could—

The hollow sockets shifted toward Leonie.

Her movement faltered.

Stormlight flickered, unstable, as if its anchor had been ripped away.

Leonie’s eyes widened.

Then they hollowed.

She swung anyway, pure instinct dragging her blade through the motion.

A scythe swept in from her blind side.

She did not react. She couldn’t.

The blade passed through where her leg had been.

Blood burst outward in a violent arc.

Leonie’s body dropped, armour crashing against fractured stone as she fell.

In the same instant, another arc severed her left arm at the elbow as she tried to brace.

Ayu screamed her name.

Leonie’s Valkyrie presence wavered, stormlight sputtering into sparks that died in the air.

Her aura collapsed.

The Emperor’s weight vanished.

The battlefield loosened, and Maerwyn’s domain crashed back in with crushing force.

Ayu felt her lungs seize.

Felt her rhythm falter under the sudden pressure.

Leonie’s body sagged as it fell, consciousness slipping, stormlight extinguished.

A scythe descended to finish her.

Too fast.

Too close.

No one within reach.

It was about to bisect her when—

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

A flicker of silver tore through the chaos.

Cards.

They struck the scythe-branch with a sharp metallic crack, shifting its arc by the smallest margin. The blade gouged stone instead of flesh.

Lukas stepped onto the fractured bark beside her, boots landing atop darkened sap and splinters. He caught Leonie before her body could hit the ground again.

His jaw was clenched.

The easy smile was gone.

A single card hovered near his shoulder.

The Hermit

An old figure cloaked in layered robes stood upon its surface, lantern raised in one steady hand. The light within it was not bright. It was focused. Narrow. Carved from solitude rather than flame.

The glow extended around Lukas in a muted sphere, bending Maerwyn’s pressure just enough to carve a pocket of stillness within the crushing domain.

He seized that narrow opening.

His cards snapped into formation, magnetised lines weaving around him and Leonie in a tight lattice.

Their presence dimmed beneath The Hermit’s lantern-light as he pulled her away from the front line in controlled retreat.

As he shifted back, he sent a pulse toward them.

The creature curses whoever cuts its fingers. We cannot afford another loss.”

Then his gaze cut to Pablo.

We need your summon to do it for us.”

Pablo’s eyes widened for a fraction of a breath.

He swayed where he stood, face pale, dried blood tracing from his lips, his consciousness hanging by threads stretched too many times already.

And yet… he nodded.

Leave it to me.”

Lukas turned to Ayu.

My sister is down. You need to hold the ground with Imani. I’ll strengthen your Will. Push the Bride back. Keep Alonso alive until I can bring him back. This fight… it rests on you.”

***

During those few breaths before the signal, Ayu never stopped fighting.

Maerwyn never gave her that luxury.

While Imani absorbed the full brunt of the remaining Spawn and three Knights with Chiara’s support, she took the full force of the executioner scythes aimed at her and Alonso.

Her lungs burned raw.

Her arms trembled from the repeated shock of impact. Bruises darkened her skin beneath the sap and blood. Cuts stung across her ribs and thighs.

The fire within her had thinned under the weight of the Bride’s returning pressure. With Leonie gone, the domain pressed heavier, thicker, as though the air itself sought to bury them.

A scythe screamed down.

Her Awakening reacted.

It tried to twist her body aside.

It mapped the escape path before her conscious mind even registered the arc.

She overruled it.

She planted her feet.

Will surged through her forearms as she raised them in a reinforced guard. Muscle and bone met hardened wood with a brutal crack that shuddered through her frame. The impact forced her half a step into the mud. Her knees bent. Her spine compressed.

She held.

Another blade tore in from her flank.

Her Awakening demanded flow. Slip. Evade. Strike from elsewhere.

She refused.

She stepped into it instead.

Her shoulder rolled forward, elbow crashing into the scythe’s curved body. Will flared along the point of contact. Bark split. Sparks burst across her cheek. The killing arc shifted just enough to miss Alonso’s neck by inches.

A third descended.

Her shin snapped upward in a savage check, reinforced by burning Will, smashing against the flat of the blade and knocking it aside before it could cleave downward. The recoil numbed her leg to the knee.

She did not yield ground.

She became the wall before Alonso.

Pain lanced through her ribs where an earlier cut had reopened. Her breath hitched. Her vision blurred at the edges. Sweat stung her eyes.

Still she stood.

It was then that Lukas’ message reached her.

She sent a quick confirmation in return.

Warmth answered, slow at first before it ignited fully.

Behind her, the darkness tore open into radiance.

A colossal solar disc rose just beyond her silhouette.

Golden rays, straight and wavering in equal measure, stretched outward in perfect symmetry, forming a sacred geometry of light. At its centre, a faint human visage shimmered within the brilliance, calm and sovereign.

Gold deepened into white at the core, and its steady radiance carved through the crimson haze of Maerwyn’s domain.

The Sun

Heat poured into Ayu’s body and mind.

Into her lungs.

Into the marrow of her bones.

Her song rose with it.

Where it had strained before, now it rang clear. A fierce, rising melody that throbbed in rhythm with the solar heart behind her.

Flames no longer flickered along her limbs. They climbed in disciplined pillars, wrapping her shoulders, coiling down her arms, igniting her kicks with blazing trails.

Maerwyn’s pressure met that radiance.

It recoiled by a fraction.

Enough.

Enough for air to fill her lungs again.

Enough for the next descending scythe to slow just slightly as it entered the field of her Will.

Ayu stepped forward into that light.

She drove a knee upward, cracking a scythe aside. She pivoted and slammed her heel into the haft of another, splintering it in a burst of flame. Her fists burned as she struck hardened wood, Will reinforcing bone so it would not shatter.

Behind her, Alonso stood unmoving.

Between life and death.

Her fire surged higher.

For the first time since Leonie fell, the battlefield inhaled.

***

In the corner, behind the others, Pablo stood in silence.

He knew what had to be done.

The question was whether he would survive long enough to see it through.

His gaze swept across the battlefield.

Leonie lay broken, half her limbs gone, armour split open, blood pooling beneath her as she rested in Lukas’ arms.

Alonso remained upright through sheer defiance, one arm severed, drenched in red, more corpse than man, yet still refusing to fall.

Something inside Pablo hardened.

Hesitation burned away.

His helix ignited.

Before him, the base frame of a Thrall manifested.

One orb cracked.

The construct’s body surged forward, muscle-like fibres thickening, joints tightening as speed multiplied.

A second orb fractured.

Its forearms reshaped, edges sharpening into elongated blades that gleamed with lethal clarity.

Then… a third orb shattered.

The Thrall transformed again.

Its spine arched. Its limbs lengthened. The silhouette shifted into something predatory, a fusion of humanoid frame and leopard’s lethal grace, bladed arms extending like scythes of living steel.

It stepped once.

And blurred.

The air split in its wake as it launched into the battlefield.

Behind it, Pablo’s knees buckled.

He collapsed onto the fractured ground, his body left hollow, the fourth and final mind that had sustained it now housed within the Thrall.
