I was awakened by a quite dramatic storm, this morning - not violent with hail and the threat of tornadoes, more the loud, rolling thunder and bright, frequent lightning you expect from a Hollywood thunderstorm. Very evocative of the phrase "it was a dark and stormy night", which, given that it's not yet sunrise, is wholly accurate. Given that I fell asleep for a good 90 minutes while Arya and Beth were watching KPop Demon Hunters for the fifth or sixth time this week - and then went to bed an hour later - I probably would have gotten up around this time anyway.
KPop Demon Hunters is quite good, by the way. The plot isn't much different from (and owes a lot to) anime in the genres of "magical girls hunt demons" and "a music idol's singing is plot-critical", but it's packed into a short movie instead of a multi-season anime complete with catch-up episodes and bad filler arcs. And the music is absurdly catchy.
Something that struck me about the narrative intro is that it echoes the narrative intro of a very different summer 2025 movie about the power of music: Sinners. But whereas Sinners tells us that the music that moves people also attracts evil, KPop Demon Hunters says music is pretty much the only thing keeping the world from going to complete shit. There's a bit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in there, too: into each generation is born a trio of pop singers who are the only thing keeping the demons from taking over the world.
Definitely a worthy way to spend 90-ish minutes of your time, but be warned that if you have any 8-year-old girls living with you, you're going to be spending way more time watching it than that.
