DESCRIPTION

Video shows the summary, text shows the technical!

Note on the delayed release: We do need an extra week to make sure the in-game login system is fully functional! But since the VR update is coming in March it's very likely we will have two back to back updates released!

This week:

VR Compatibility

VR Controls

VR Compatibility

So here's what you need to know: This game is being designed around the Valve Index controllers. VR can be toggled in-game at runtime! So you can at any time switch to mouse and keyboard if you get tired.

The bulk of the VR compatibility work this week was making sure UI renders over everything and ensuring existing behaviors "make sense" or are adjusted for VR.

After the poll that I released yesterday I am fully convinced the overwhelming majority of VR players prefer full range joystick motion, therefore this will be the primary default method of locomotion.

I really wanted to add teleportation method of locomotion but that motion type doesn't make sense for this game. Why? Well because surfing, grappling, jetpacking all require a high degree of mobility that far surpasses teleportation, therefore teleportation has been removed from the implementation queue (for now). It will be added later on.

VR Controls

The VR controller setup is very similar of that of VRChat. The rotate joystick button is used to open the pause menu and the movement joystick button is used to toggle sprint.

The big challenge was porting over the right click and right hold functions of desktop mode. How it works in VR is any primary button (the A controller button) can be clicked or held to either bring up a command or bring up the remove menu (respectively). This mirrors exactly how the right mouse button works in desktop mode.

The new VR Controls menu allows you to switch between left or right handed.

This coming week I will be adding support for all items and some fringe behaviors that need special attention (like tool behaviors, such as grapple hook).

I really really want to jump into the desert and get chased by the giant worm at night. The map is freaking huge.

Stay tuned!
