Chapters in which secondary characters "pop off" or "step up" are often some of my favorite. While the end of every story arc is dominated by our protagonist (by design—otherwise it's not MC's story!) it's on our way there that the other characters have a chance to shine.
In chapter 14's case, it's Hikiko & Hitomi. We get to see a lot of stuff from them, emotions from compassion to grief—but most importantly, and especially for MC, we see what it means to be a friend. While they are technically Masa's friends, it's all too evident they (and Fumihiro) are growing on our ronin.
For MC to be able to bond with people who couldn't be more different then they are—social status, age, interests, upbringing, everything—is a real growth moment. Now will that increase MC's power level 1000 points like in a shonen anime? Probably not. But will it make them a better human being?
Absolutely. Oh—and I think a few of you might enjoy how this chapter ends!
