Mystery and deduction puzzles hit different in interactive fiction. I can't explain it, but I honestly think that is what the genre is best suited for (once you get past the otome romances and the eroge dating sims). The medium can do far more than that, of course, but when a VN or other IF game tasks me with thinking and reasoning out what's been presented...I'm instantly immersed and endeared to it in a way no other videogame can do. I can't get enough of it!
But you guys already knew that if you survived through Book 3, lol! Don't worry, this chapter isn't nearly that rough.
I'm currently playing through the Zero Escape series, and if you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend it. It's been incredibly fun for me to theorize who's done what and why long before any answers are given. Granted, those games are quite a bit more sci-fi and fantastical than straightforward whodunnits, but there's still some thinking involved all the same.
To finish my tangent, I very much appreciate the chance when the protagonist is given the chance to reason out something, right away, instead of it being ignored or glossed over to create some sort of dramatic "payoff" later. The thing is, that isn't a payoff--it's the player being frustrated for perhaps hours on end until the MC finally recalls or thinks about what the player had already concluded much earlier.
One thing I'm proud of about our favorite ronin is that he/she doesn't have that problem!
