UNC handled their worst season with dignity and humility. JK, winky face, it’s beef time.

College students can be so cruel. They have the moral flexibility of childhood but the vocabulary of young adults who have recently studied for the SATs. A mean recipe. And perhaps nobody knows this better than Jason Capel, the face of UNC basketball during the worst season in the storied program’s history.

They went 8-20 in the 01-02 season.

Now I wish with all my heart that I could find the UNC basketball message boards specifically discussing Capel that year. But alas, they seem to be scrubbed from the internet. I’m not saying because the content was too wild even for the internet, but I think it might’ve gotten that bad. Mostly because I was able to find a post from an anonymous message board moderator who said he/she felt “shame for years” based on the way the boards had treated Capel. 

And what do you know, decades later, Capel was still more than a little salty! So salty in fact he saw fit to yell at UNC crowds as an opposing assistant coach, which you know is based on deep-seeded hurt and shame and disappointment and frustration– my point is it’s an emotional reaction. Nobody yells at a group of riled up college kids while using the logical part of their brain. Too dangerous.p.s.
