This is one of those demos I had to mourn a bit when I lost all of my files in Chile. I wrote it around the same time as Skeletons, and it had similar themes. I was going through a terrible loss, someone I thought I would be in love with forever. I was slowly realizing that it was truly over.
Similar to the last demo I posted, "Coals," this is a really great individual moment, one that could really shine and hit hard emotionally if it was properly contextualized. I would have loved to write a few sections leading up to this, something that lays the groundwork.
Because this is one half of a more complex feeling. On the surface it is a realization that the world has broken... but in order to be fully understood it needs to be paired with the emotion that came right before it, namely a feeling of hope. The entirety of the emotional state isn't just the feeling that things are over, it's the tipping point between that hope and the dashing of the hope. It captures the moment of understanding.
If I was approaching this now to work with, I would have a verse or verse + chorus that expressed that state of tenuous hopefulness. The idea that maybe something can be salvaged, maybe something beautiful can come of all of this pain. Then the transition to this moment would capture that terrible realization that the world has irrevocably shattered, and nothing can put it back together. The moment of transition would be where the true communication of the emotional state would be present.
It would be pretty much the opposite of the soft moment in windswept. Windswept starts with the fact that everything is broken, and then brings in a sliver of hope (Could I still love you?). It has a similar power because it juxtaposes those two disparate feelings, highlighting the underlying complexity of our emotional states. Any time you can communicate real complexity the piece becomes so much more human.
The drop, then, would augment that emotional state by adding intensity and showing that it isn't a passive state, but an active and dreadful mourning. It had a lot of potential.
Lyrics:
Nothing lasts forever
But this month feels so long
Cause everything is broken
And everything is wrong
Everything is wrong
Everything is broken (x4)
