Friday screenshot - Alternate stage palettes
A colorization is often a good reason for players to replay their favorite games. They really want to complete a stage to see how the next one is going to look.
The case of DK is a little different than other games like Mario, Kirby or Mega Man. Instead of having a bunch of stages, it has 100 stages! It would be almost impossible to give every stage their own palette (it would be a bad game design idea as well).
So, one of the very first ideas we had for DKDX was to give each world a set of alternate palettes. The big city, for example, will allow Mario to go from morning to evening then ending the world with a battle against DK in a starred night.
If you compare this stage with the original one, you will also see that we haven't just put color but we also edited the map to add more detail like the starred sky. We will only do this with some specific, though, as the original game was already pushing the VRAM (Video RAM) to the limits, so there is almost no room for new tiles (yes, even with the double GBC VRAM).
Oh, by the way... I'm not a graphic artist. So I teamed up with two professional graphic artist to achieve the best result we can offer within GBC limitations. Big City was done by Jorge Peral (https://twitter.com/Loktarius/ ), a friend of mine who has worked in many indie games and loves Game Boy, of course :-)Feel free to ask anything about DK or even development and hacking, I'll be happy to answer any questions (as long as I can respond them!). That will probably give me ideas for new posts as well!Thank you all! :-)
