Meet Iron Barbell — a very special commission we just completed for our beloved Sarah, one of our most loyal and enthusiastic patrons who keeps trusting us with her characters and honestly, we could not be more grateful for that. This one came out really good, Sarah. 💜
Here we’re sharing two stages of the pencil process — completely free for everyone — so you can get a feel for how this piece came together from the very first rough sketches. The raw energy of those early lines is something we always love showing, because it’s where the character’s personality really starts to emerge. And Iron Barbell’s personality? Absolutely zero tolerance for nonsense. One eyepatch, a water bottle she’s crushing slightly too hard, tattoo sleeves for days, and a tank top that is doing its absolute heroic best. 😏

There’s something about a character who is simultaneously intimidating AND effortlessly gorgeous that we find endlessly fun to draw. The eyepatch gives her instant mystery. The tattoo sleeves tell you she’s got a whole story you haven’t heard yet. The cargo pants and combat boots say she’s practical and dangerous. And that tank top says… well. It says a lot. 😏
The color palette on this one — those warm pinks in the background playing against the cool greens of the pants and the neutral of the top — came together beautifully. Hernán kept the skin tones warm and natural to let the tattoos really pop, and we think the result is one of our cleanest, most striking pin-ups in a while.
