🐺 Added VA Version:
Hey there sweetheart,
This week's patreon release is coming out a day early to go along with the cover project I'm putting out today. I hope you enjoy these little extra behind the scenes thoughts and versions of this cover over here!
I've seen friends release similar things in regards to their own song covers and since I've never gotten to put out my own solo song cover till now, I'm kind of excited to even have this out just for the simple fact that it means I’ve released a solo cover haha.
Saying that though, if you know me, you know I get a little nervous about reception towards things I know are a bit out of the expected type of content I usually put out. And on top of that, I still had a bit of a worry that this acappella might not be as "raw" as people might have expected/wanted to hear.
However, I was assured by a close friend, who specializes in the song cover department, that this is a very normal sounding acapella despite my worries. He mentioned even ballad song covers have lots of mix magic happening in the studio to guarantee a type of sound. With this song in particular, it’s quite processed in nature and the style of the original vocals is to be tuned in a certain way for its own stylization. I was told it would sound awkward without the proper effects there and was reminded not to be too hard/conscious about it because again this was all very normal. Maybe it’s because I don’t do too much music very often but it did help a lot hearing that.
Listening back to this song, I can tell he’s right with the genre type differences. And I realized it’s not fair to expect vocals to be treated the same across different types of song styles. Just from my “Choose Me” group song Acapella, I can tell Tameless Territory is just a lot more electronic compared to that haha.
I do really think that you can hear all the amazing work the mixer did. You can listen to how my vocals came to life with the panning, mixing, and voluming work. And also, with the acapella, it's also a lot easier to hear all the layers I recorded for this project! Which…was a lot.
For each guide I was given, I made sure to have a set of doubles for each one. And with the harmonies and adlibs tracks, it really pushed my singing ability to its limit. Hopefully my range has expanded a little, even if it’s something small like +1…because man some of those harmonies were HIGH. I ended up finishing with around 20 tracks in total. Having so many layers was to ensure the mix sounded full and strong. But despite 20 finished tracks being already a lot, I know the amount of tracks I had for all the recording takes I did exceeded way more than 20…LOL.
Also, I was directed by this same friend, to really lean into a more growly tone compared to the original performance. So I did my best to take his advice and really do that. I think you can really pick up on it if you were to compare this cover and the original side by side. Actually, I’m a little self-conscious that I went too hard in some areas with growling but somehow the mixer still made it work. Thank god haha. Multiple times during my recording session I was directed and told that I had my best takes when I was just playing around with the line and freely experimenting. I feel super out of my element when it comes to singing so trying to loosen up and being able to sing free and curiously was a bit difficult for me. But at the end of the day, no matter how corny it may sound, singing from the heart really is the best ingredient for a cover. And I learned that while you can fix a note during mixing, you can’t add emotion into it.
I know I’m rambling a lot about the music portion…I have a feeling I’ll probably be parroting a lot of this back to you on stream so you’ll be hearing this again. (I’m sorry) But sitting here quietly and getting this post written up in preparation for tomorrow’s release (today for you), really has me reflecting back on the whole process. With every new experience I go through, I just want to share how much I’ve learned with you and what I felt during that time…But again, forgive me if I end up being a broken record during stream later on.
Technically, Tameless Territory is not the first solo song cover I’ve recorded for. It’s definitely the first for me in terms of the genre it’s in, that's for sure. But I do have another project I finished a while ago that’s still in the production works. I can’t give you a timeline estimate for it, but I did want to bring it up here and let you know that it’s a different genre completely. Just in case this song is not to your taste. For that one, you can maybe have something in the future to look forward to and enjoy it instead.
Again, with all of this though, it really all stems from my desire to tackle new things on and make you proud while I do so. So thank you for being patient with me while I’m being all experimental with a lot of my creative content. As I mentioned in the description of the public youtube video already, you already give me so much strength and security to try these new things. I’m really lucky to be in this position. So thank you again for being here and expressing excitement for all these things as well. It makes me so happy that you’re excited.
I know for this particular song, it’s a bit bittersweet. Especially with what’s going on with everything that’s surrounding it. Referencing again back to my yapping on the YT description, it was planned to be a celebration cover for release day…So I can understand all the multiple reasons why it may be a hard listen for some. In lots of aspects. Not just one. But for those who still do end up being here despite this though, I really really…really hope I did it justice for you. And at the end of the day, I just want my performance to make you smile a bit no matter if I sound campy in the way I’m singing or look a little silly dancing around in the video.
Hmm…Maybe I’ll save my thoughts about how shooting the video went, for on stream. That way I don’t make this BTS too long and I can try to not sound as repetitive for the After-party haha. (Who are we kidding though…I’m going to probably be excitedly yapping to you about this all over again.)
Anyways, if you did end up liking this cover please consider giving it some repeated listens on the Youtube video to help it grow! Thank you so much for being here for my first solo song cover, sweetie.
To hopefully many more amazing things in the future! Love you so very much.
