Hey all! Here's the team I used to place 6th/400,000 in the first Global Challenge of Pokemon Champions.
Hawlucha: Mega-Hawlucha enables the OHKO strategy because it gets the combination of No Guard and Entrainment, something we'd never seen before. Because it doesn't learn Tailwind I decided to use Close Combat and Brave Bird - these are good offensive types in the current format that can deal meaningful damage even without investment. I trained it to be max speed and max HP which happens to survive Timid Froslass Blizzard 100% of the time. If you use this team always remember Entrainment can be used to overwrite your OPPONENT'S abilities too - I used it a few times against Sylveon, Mega Gardevoir, and Rotom to gain an edge.
Snorlax: I needed a Pokemon to use the one-hit-KO move and ultimately landed on Snorlax. I experimented with several other Pokemon including Excadrill and Tyrantrum, but what I found was that frailer Pokemon had a lot of trouble sticking around long enough to make it worth the investment needed to get set up. Instead, I focused on the bulkiest Pokemon that gets a one-hit-KO move in Snorlax. Stockpile allows you to start without Hawlucha on the field, bulking up first, and then later changing your ability. I went with Body Press to allow Snorlax to do something even without No Guard, as it not only becomes stronger with Stockpile but also isn't affected by Intimidate. I trained Snorlax fully in its Physical bulk as that is its weaker defense and also because it boosts the power of Body Press. Leftovers is Snorlax's best item as you want to stay on the field forever when you go with the OHKO mode. Thick Fat is an amazing ability allowing you to shrug off attacks from Mega Charizard and Mega Froslass without any trouble.
Sinistcha: In order to keep Snorlax healthy, I added Sinistcha. It can not only redirect Fighting moves with Rage Powder, but it can also burn foes with Matcha Gatcha and set Trick Room up for Snorlax. Most importantly of course is Hospitality which heals Snorlax consistently throughout the battle - with Stockpile Snorlax will sometimes take a lot of damage early before becoming bulkier, and Sinistcha providing some healing is a big deal. I went with Protect to better support the Perish mode and Kasib Berry as I was worried about Basculegion and opposing Gengar. Trained to survive Blackglasses Kingambit Kowtow Cleave.
Incineroar: The final Pokemon of the core strategy, Incineroar enables Snorlax to play slow and set up. Using Fake Out + Stockpile Turn 1 and then Parting Shot + Stockpile turn 2 to get Hawlucha in to go for Entrainment is close to the ideal setup for the team. As this team has both Rain and Perish Song, I used Protect over a Fire move. Passho Berry was my item of choice as the Rain matchup is actually quite difficult. I went with Throat Chop for the secondary effect but because my Incineroar is as slow as possible it never really came up. Trained to survive Mega Floette Light of Ruin.
Politoed: I wanted more for Charizard as it is the most popular Mega right now, so I added Politoed 5th. I thought Perish Song fit here because there are some flying Pokemon (like Corviknight) I can never beat with Snorlax, and I thought that adding Perish Song to win 2v2 end games was a good idea. I trained Politoed to be generically bulky and gave it the Sitrus Berry to help it stay alive. Encore has synergy with the final member but also works against Pokemon like Corviknight who want to boost with Iron Defense.
Gengar: Initially I wasn't sure if I wanted to use Mega Gengar enabling a Perish Trap mode or Basculegion-Female, but after testing I realized while the rain matchup was pretty bad with Mega Gengar it was unplayable with Basculegion. Since this team already has both Incineroar and Sinistcha, adding Gengar allowed me a limited but threatening Perish Trap mode. Disable combos with Encore, and I chose Shadow Ball as my attack of choice to hit opposing Ghost types. I just went with the default training in the damage calculator, no idea what it does :3
What I will say if you watch the VOD is that I think this team LOOKS better than it actually is. Against the standard Sneasler/Kingambit/Basculegion core it has some pretty major trouble as well as being weak to both Rain and Mega Floette. In other words I think it is structurally weak against a majority of the best teams in the metagame. That being said it is a very fun team so feel free to give it a try yourself! The default mode is Snorlax Incineroar Hawlucha Sinistcha in that order - just watch out for ground immune Pokemon.
