It's something I think about often. Usually the discourse goes along the lines of, 'everything can be art'. Maybe a better question is, 'Is this good art', or, 'Does this have any meaning?'
I have a unreasonable hatred for art that is simply meta commentary, i.e. any kind of art that is made simply to ask the question, 'What is art?'. Some examples come to mind; Duchamp's toilet piece in 1917, or Andy Worhol's campbell's soup cans in the 1960s. A more modern example would be the artist who taped a banana to a wall with duct tape.
I don't have any formal art education, so I'd understand if someone who did felt I am simply uncultured. But I stand with the opinion that art should be beautiful. There are enough horrors in the world to suffice if you're looking to be depressed. And I think the question, 'What is art?' has been asked to the point where the question is simply cliche. It's boring. All I want is to make something beautiful, to take a piece of myself and to share it with my fellow people.
So, is this art? Does this have any more meaning besides the surface level visuals? I don't really know. I'm a dumb ass who just likes to make it :)
