๐ Breathing New Life into Anbernic RG405M / RG405V / RG505: GammaOS Next v1.1 on Android 14!
GammaOS Next v1.1.0 is now available for the Anbernic RG405M, RG405V, and RG505, bringing them into the Android 14 / LineageOS 21 era with a modern, fast, and console-like experience.
Hey everyone,
I am very happy to announce the release of GammaOS Next v1.1.0 for the Anbernic T618 family (RG405M / RG405V / RG505). This is the first official GammaOS Next build for these devices on Android 14, and it delivers a major leap over the original Android 12 GammaOS releases from over two years ago.

๐ฅ What is new in v1.1.0 for Anbernic T618?
This release is a full platform upgrade to Android 14 / LineageOS 21, with system-wide enhancements and device-specific tuning for the T618-based handhelds.
Core System and Base
Android 14 / LineageOS 21 base, replacing the older Android 12 stack
Improved scheduler and thread management for smoother UI and better responsiveness
Reduced background CPU overhead and improved thermal characteristics
Faster boot times and better stability under heavy emulator loads
Global Shader Pipeline
System-wide shader support, currently shipping with:
CRT-Simple
LCD3x
Fully integrated with rotation, scaling, and high DPI behavior
Long-press the Shader Quick Settings tile to configure shaders globally
Immersive, Console-Like Experience
Immersive mode enabled by default
Status bar and navigation bar hidden until you swipe in from the edges
Cleaner presentation for handheld gaming and launcher front-ends
Fixes for task switcher responsiveness and touch handling issues
GammaEQ (Audio Enhancements)
New GammaEQ backend implemented in AudioFlinger
Hooks into the fast mixer where supported for lower latency audio
EQ is currently configured via system properties (UI is planned for a future update)
Overall aim: consistent, low-latency audio for emulation and streaming apps
๐ฎ Device-Specific Improvements for RG405M / RG405V / RG505
This build goes beyond a simple version bump and includes targeted improvements for the Anbernic T618 hardware:
Updated GPU and graphics libraries for higher stability and better performance
No more reliance on Retroid GPU drivers
Corrected display timings and improved refresh behavior
Enhanced CPU governor tuning for smoother frame pacing under load
Noticeably lower input latency and reduced microstutter in demanding emulators
Improved Wi-Fi reliability over previous vendor builds
Retuned thermal behavior for more consistent sustained performance
Better battery efficiency, especially on the Lite edition
๐ฅ Recommendation:
For the best gaming experience (performance, thermals, and battery), I recommend using the GammaOS Next Lite build. It removes Google services and leaves more headroom for emulators and front-ends.
๐งผ Fresh Install Only โ No In-Place Upgrades
Because this release moves from Android 12 to Android 14 with deep changes to the OS, vendor blobs and partition expectations:
This is a clean install only
No dirty flash / in-place upgrade from GammaOS v1.5.1 or stock is supported
Attempting to upgrade in place will likely result in instability or boot failures
Treat this exactly as a fresh flash of a new firmware.
๐ฅ Installation
Full installation instructions (fastboot, scripts, and device-specific notes) are available here:
Please read the guide carefully, especially around:
Bootloader unlock requirements
The distinction between Full and Lite builds
Mandatory EraseUserData step for a clean Android 14 environment
Flashing will erase all user data, so be sure to back up anything important beforehand.
๐ Known Limitations
GammaEQ is active under the hood, but the UI is not yet available. EQ profiles must be set through system properties for now.
Additional shader effects will be added in future updates as I continue to refine the global shader pipeline.
๐ Thank You
Thank you again for supporting GammaOS on Patreon. These handhelds have been around for a while now, and I am genuinely excited to bring them into the Android 14 generation with a modern, tuned firmware that still respects their original purpose: handheld gaming.
Your feedback on Discord and GitHub is incredibly valuable. Please let me know how GammaOS Next v1.1.0 performs on your RG405M, RG405V, or RG505, and what you would like to see next (more shaders, EQ UI, additional tweaks, etc.).
Enjoy the new build and happy gaming.
