S&M – Döma
1 / 5
DESCRIPTION

Is it possible to assemble an accurate portrait of someone who died twice?

We won't get the chance to meet Chairman Kekkonen Döma, perhaps no one ever did.

…Even so, Jensey's mind fills in the gaps. Maybe this was Döma. Or, maybe it's the furthest thing from it.

We may never know.

Pretty soon we'll be getting some insights into one of the most prolific men of the Second Fraternal Republic in an upcoming devlog. ^^

As for some behind the scenes details, Döma is actually one of the first character created for Splendor & Misery specifically.

Keep in mind that the art here is VERY old. (In other words, it's bad!)

Throughout early development, only two pieces including Döma were created. As we developed the idea of his erasure from history, and the timeline moved away from him, it became significantly less important to include him, or further refine his design. As a result, Döma's internal design was:

Strange, right? Döma is old enough that he was created back when there existed an additional humanoid race known as ki'in in our world, hence the unusual design.

At the time the universe leaned more heavily on fantasy world building elements, many of which would be refined out with each major rewrite and experiment.

Döma managed to survive despite much of the world he was made for being cut or reworked–a fate many other characters weren't spared from!

Looking closer we can notice some interesting development details here. The flag in the background is the earliest iteration of what eventually became the flag of the Second Fraternal Republic, as well as the flag of Elysion.

Another interesting detail: the papers in front of them include an early name for the Second Fraternal Republic, that being the "Aks Tukankitu Revolutionary Republic". Not too far off from "Sakutakinaks" which eventually became the name we used for the region during the Colonial Era.

Alongside this are their signatures. For almost all cast members, their names remained the same throughout development, save for only one major exception–but that's a story for another time.

You can also see very early versions of Umsi Aykut, Cyrille Lamontz, Eli Ménard, and Sabia Derviŝo depicted here. This was one of the earliest concept pieces for S&M as it entered pre-production, so most things were still up in the air. One of the only characters that we had developed prior to this was Eli, as she was (and still is) being developed for the mainline Ulysses story.

…Clearly they've come a long way in the last handful of years. ^^

Alas, Döma remains little more than a haunting name by the events of S&M. Even in the OM short stories set during the Republic he manages to be just out of reach.
