Ren stepped up beside her, leaning his forearms against the cold concrete railing. He looked out at the apocalyptic skyline.

"You're right," Ren said quietly. "If Gojo stays in that box, things get infinitely worse. But going back out there right now is suicide."

Maki frowned, her grip tightening on the railing. "We can't just sit here."

"We have to," Ren replied, turning his head to meet her sharp amber eyes. "Think about it. Yuji is a perfect cage. Sukuna shouldn't be able to just take over unless the balance was violently tipped. Someone must have cornered Yuji and force-fed him."

Maki's eyes widened slightly as the logic clicked. "How many?"

"Based on that cursed energy rolling over the city? Ten. Maybe fifteen fingers all at once," Ren said, his voice completely flat. "Maki, even with both of us running on a Complete Heavenly Restriction, we are nothing to him right now. If we step into that crossfire, we die in a fraction of a second. The only play we have left tonight is waiting for Yuji to digest that power and take the wheel back."

Maki stared at him. She hated it. She hated being helpless, hated hiding in the dark while her comrades were likely dying in the rubble. But looking at Ren's calm, pragmatic expression, the fight drained out of her.

She let out a long, shaky breath. The unyielding stance of the Zen'in warrior gave way, leaving only an exhausted teenage girl.

"Damn it," she murmured, letting her forehead fall against Ren's shoulder.

Ren wrapped his arms around her without a second thought, holding her close. She didn't resist. Instead, she sagged into him, every ounce of tension draining from her body. Her fingers bunched the torn fabric of his jacket, clinging to it as though it were the only thing keeping her upright.

She lifted her head, searching for the only thing that still felt solid amid the ruin.

Their lips met.

There was nothing careful about it. It was rough, frantic, born from the shock of surviving a Disaster Curse and the crushing weight of everything that had nearly been lost. Maki kissed him back without hesitation, a quiet breath escaping her as her fingers slid into the ash-dusted hair at the nape of his neck, holding him there as if neither of them could bear to let go.

Ren groaned into the kiss, pulling her firmly against him. His hands traveled down her back and came to rest on her buttocks, his fingers tightening through the torn fabric of her uniform before easing into a slow, possessive knead.

Maki let out a muffled, breathless whine against his lips. The sharp, grounding sensation cut right through her spiraling anxiety. She melted against him, parting her legs just enough to let him step closer, entirely willing to let the burning city fade into the background for just a few minutes.

The kiss dragged on, heavy and desperate, until the sheer need for oxygen finally forced them to break apart. Maki pulled back just an inch, her chest heaving as she rested her forehead against his chin. Her eyes were squeezed shut, a violent flush burning through the layer of ash and soot on her cheeks.

Ren didn't let her step away. His hands stayed firmly planted on her hips, his thumbs tracing the curve of her lower back. A slow, familiar smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth despite the exhaustion settling into his bones.

"I thought you were the one lecturing me about not doing this in the middle of a war zone," Ren murmured, unable to hide the grin creeping onto his face. "So... who's kissing who now, Zen'in?"

Maki's eyes snapped open. She glared up at him, cheeks warm with annoyance more than embarrassment. She still didn't let go of his jacket.

"Shut up," she muttered.

She looked away with a click of her tongue.

"I'm just blowing off steam. That's all." She shot him another glare. "Don't get the wrong idea."

Ren let out a quiet laugh.

"Wouldn't dream of it."

"...Idiot."

He leaned in, meaning to press another kiss against her jaw.

Maki went still.

Her eyes flicked past him to the street below.

In an instant, every trace of softness left her.

Before Ren could ask what she'd seen, both palms slammed into his chest.

He stumbled back a step, boots scraping across the concrete.

"...Fuck."

The word barely left her lips.

She turned away at once, folding her arms across herself. By the time Ren caught his balance, the tips of her ears had already gone bright red.

"...Maki?"

She didn't answer.

Ren frowned and stepped up to the railing.

A lone figure stood beneath the flickering streetlamp.

It was Nobara.

She had apparently just arrived, but instead of heading inside, she stood rooted to the spot, staring up at the balcony.

Her gaze bounced between Ren and Maki.

The hammer slipped from her hand and clattered onto the pavement.

"I..."

She swallowed.

"...What?"

Maki didn't bother with the stairs.

She vaulted over the railing without a word, dropping to the street below. Her boots struck the asphalt with a solid thud.

A moment later, Ren followed.

Nobara still hadn't moved.

She looked from one of them to the other before pointing weakly in their direction.

"Were you two..." She blinked once. "...Seriously kissing?"
