The late afternoon light filtered through the window of Queen’s bedroom. She wore her casual clothes, a comfortable yet stylish street outfit that sharply contrasted with her imposing hero costume. She stood with her back to the full-length mirror, looking at her reflection over her shoulder.
Her hair was completely let down. No longer tied in its classic, thick braid, her straight, dark hair cascaded well past her waist, flowing down her thighs until it almost brushed the backs of her knees. It was a majestic sight, but to Queen, in that moment, it only represented unnecessary dead weight.
She clenched her fists as she remembered the ranking tournament. She had given it her all, fought with relentless ferocity, but in the end... she had lost to X. The number one hero remained out of reach. Queen closed her eyes, grabbed a hair tie, and with mechanical movements, braided her incredibly long hair back into its usual style. It was time to leave the past behind. She stepped out of her room with a clear destination in mind.
Fifteen minutes later, the bell of an exclusive downtown hair salon announced her arrival. A friendly barber welcomed her and guided her to the chair in front of a large, well-lit mirror.
"Welcome. What are we going to do with this beautiful braid today?" the barber asked, draping a protective cape over her casual clothes.
"I want a change," Queen replied, her voice firm and serene. "Cut it."
The barber nodded with a professional smile. She stood behind the chair and carefully removed Queen’s hair tie, undoing the thick braid strand by strand. When she finished, she used a brush to smooth out the temporary waves.
Viewed from behind, it was a breathtaking sight. The curtain of dark, silky hair covered the heroine’s entire back, extending past the backrest of the chair and falling almost all the way to the floor.
"This is magnificent hair, very strong and healthy," the woman commented, picking up a pair of long barber shears. "Where are we taking it up to?"
"Start at the shoulders," Queen ordered.
The barber didn't hesitate. She grabbed a large section of hair, and the shears made their first, lethal sound: Snip.
The massive lock fell to the floor. The barber continued working around her head, chopping off years of growth in a matter of minutes. The weight vanished from Queen’s back. She now sported a straight, blunt cut that just grazed her shoulders. It gave her a sophisticated look, but when Queen looked in the mirror, she slowly shook her head. It still wasn't enough. She could still feel the shadow of her defeat.
"Shorter," Queen said, meeting her own eyes in the reflection. "Much shorter. I don't want it to get in the way at all."
The barber raised her eyebrows, surprised by the girl's determination, but smiled. She set down the long shears and picked up a smaller, more precise pair.
"Understood. Let's give it a lot more attitude."
The metallic snipping filled the room once again. The barber cut the hair high above the nape, completely clearing Queen’s neck. She worked on the sides, leaving them very short and tapered, and added texture to the top for volume and movement. The heavy, long locks were replaced by an extremely short, sharp, and edgy pixie cut.
The barber brushed the loose clippings from Queen’s neck and removed the cape.
Queen stood up from the chair. She reached a hand to the back of her neck, feeling the strange but refreshing sensation of the cool air against her bare skin. She looked in the mirror one last time. In her casual clothes and with that radical new pixie cut, she no longer looked like the same girl who had been defeated that morning. She looked lighter, fiercer, and completely reborn.
X had won the tournament, yes. But the new Queen was ready to climb back to the top.
