Disney’s 2023 live-action remake of The Little Mermaid -- despite personal gripes -- impressed me with the direction they decided to take Halle Bailey’s Ariel. So much that it felt like they realized the change gave them the perfect opportunity to do a better job addressing racism, race relations, bigotry and intolerance than their 1995 insulting retelling of the life of Pocahontas without degrading real-life people or an entire race of people in the process.
