Yeah I didn’t think I was gonna feel so satisfied with my decision, but it turns out to actually be a pretty fire book. Like, I have been into true crime a bit here and there but the topic of the Yakuza hasn’t crossed my mind too much in general.

But when I was looking at the Japan section at the bookstore I saw this novel and it seemed interesting. Although this was like, really my first time ever buying books for myself, I think I did pretty good. [“What is it about?”]

Yeah, so, I’m only on the prologue as of now, but it’s about how this Yakuza boss, named Tadamasa Goto, was kicked out of the group because he was just exhibiting irresponsible behavior like, missing meetings and making a mess of things, and the other Yakuza members got sick of him so he got kicked out. And the author spoke about how he celebrated with his mentor because they couldn’t stand the guy either. Goto was the head of the biggest Yakuza group in Japan at the time, like the late 2000s, so it was huge news.

—(It sounds like a pretty fair deal…and also a really good opportunity to get a free cardigan, no?)

[Listener receives a notification from “David” who has a heart emoji next to his name, the expression of the boyfriend changes as well as his mood]

—(…Who is he? The guy who just sent you that message? David?)

Te acaba de mandar un mensaje sobre una reunión esta noche. Nunca me dijiste que tenías una reunión. ¿Es de trabajo, o que? 

—(He just sent you a message about a meeting tonight. You never told me that you have a meeting. It’s for work, or what?)

¿La decidieron hoy? Y te olvidaste? ¿En serio? 

—(They decided on it today? And you forgot? Really?)

Ya veo… ¿Puedo ver? (He lets out his hand) Pasame el celular. (Pause) Dale…déjame ver. 

—(I see…can I see?) (Give me the phone. Come on…let me see.)

(The listener gives him their phone, there is a long silence as he goes through the messages)

…Okay. These conversations are just work related. (Beat) ¿Pero por qué tiene un corazón en su nombre?

—(But why does he have a heart next to his name?)

(Long pause as the listener explains)

That’s really why?

…Okay. (He hands the phone back to them) I believe you, it’s just…I don’t like seeing another guy with a heart next to his name. I know it doesn’t mean what I thought it meant. It still made my stomach drop. (Soft laugh) I know it sounds stupid but…I couldn’t help but feel that way.

I just don’t like it. I know it’s nothing but…it still feels weird. Like…why a heart though? (Tries laughing it off) Es que se siente un poco innecesario, ¿sabes?

—(It’s that it feels a bit unnecessary, you know?)

Do you think you could at least…you know, change it? Just for my peace of mind.

Sí…sí, quería ver tu celular por esa razón. Sé que suena raro o estupido pero…I’m sorry. I don’t wanna be that guy. But…it just felt weird.

—(Yes…yes, I wanted to see your phone for that reason. I know it sounds weird or stupid but…)

I understand if it bothered you. I don’t want to make it seem like I don’t trust you, I do, it’s just that the notification felt very unusual and…(Beat) Ya se que estuvo mal. No era mi intención hacerte sentir así.

—(I know that was wrong. It wasn’t my intention to make you feel like that.)

It’s okay? (“I didn’t know I had to manage my contact list for you”) …Huh? (“Should I run everything by you next time?”)

N-no! No, you don't need to run everything by me. I don’t want to be controlling. It’s just…the heart emoji on that guy that kinda ticked me off and…I…huh?

You’re just messing with me? (Laughs) Que loca sos. You gotta stop doing that. You scare me sometimes.

—(You’re crazy.)

…I’m sorry. (“For what?”) For…being invasive or weird about something that isn’t a big deal. I didn’t mean to overreact the way I did. (Listener reassures him)

I have nothing to worry about? …¿Estás segura? Decime la verdad, no te molesté mucho, ¿no? It’s okay if it did. (Listener reasures him) Okay…okay.

—(Are you sure? Tell me the truth, it didn’t bother you too much, did it?)

Lo siento. I just…I don’t know. Yeah (Soft laugh) I know. I deserved that.

—(I’m sorry.)

Can you come here? (They start cuddling) I just want to feel you next to me. I want to make sure you’re with me, not anywhere else. (He takes a deep breath)

Yeah…yeah, I feel better. I just got all up in my head…I’m sorry.

Sí, ya se, ¿viste? Nunca pregunto por tu celular. Nunca quise meterme en tu celular así. Pero vi esa notificación y pensé: “¿Quién carajo es este chico? Y por qué nunca he escuchado su nombre si tiene un corazón al lado? 

—(Yeah, I know, you saw? I never ask for your phone. I never want to look through your phone like that. But I saw that notification and thought: “Who the fuck is this guy? And why have I never heard of his name if there’s a heart next to it?)

And not to mention the contents of the message. “Hey, just wanted to remind you of tonight’s meeting. And I wanted to ask… "blah blah blah” you know. 

Since you haven’t mentioned a meeting tonight I got really confused and…just kinda spiraled I guess. But it was irrational, and I’m sorry. (Listener kisses him and tells him it’s okay, he laughs softly)

What is that meeting about though? Like– just out of curiosity. No quiero que sientas que tenés que explicarte si no querés. But you said it wasn’t decided on until today so, what happened?

—(I don’t want you to feel like you have to explain yourself if you don’t want to.)

Ah…ya veo. Eso tiene sentido. Is the meeting in person, or? Ugh, that sounds like a pain. What time do you have to be there?

—(Ah…I see. That makes sense.)

Ah okay. Well, if you’re exhausted afterwards I can make dinner, or we could just order something.

I’m serious. Ya trabajaste mucho, ¿y ahora tenés que lidiar con una reunión al final minuto? Making sure you don’t have to worry about dinner is like the least I could do. I wanna help you relax and have a nice night.

—(You already worked a lot, and now you have to deal with a last minute meeting?)

Maybe when you come back we could watch something, and not worry about anything…and do absolutely nothing…I don’t know about you but that sounds perfect to me.

Yeah? Mhm.
