Anko, aggressive and powerful for her age, was the known quantity here. Yuuki had surprised her in the physical tests, showing exceptional speed and strength for a civilian-born child with no apparent prior training. Now, to see if that raw capability translated to combat.
Anko lunged forward, trying to overwhelm him with a flurry of close-range strikes. Yuuki dodged, his movements fast, almost too fast. Anko shifted tactics, dropping low for a tackle. He evaded, just barely, twisting away. And then, as he straightened up and delivered the palm strike to her stomach, Midori's eyes narrowed.
For a fraction of a second, as his hand shot out, something seemed… off. His arm, or maybe the muscles in his shoulder, seemed to subtly, rapidly shift. Not like a normal muscle contraction, but a fleeting change in density, a hardening that was too fast, too controlled to be natural. It was minute, barely perceptible, perhaps just a trick of the light or an illusion created by speed and exhaustion. She dismissed it immediately, but the oddity lingered in her mind. He won the spar decisively, ending it with a clean, painful hit. Good raw ability. The technique itself, the Leaf Style stances she'd taught? Still unpolished. He relied on his raw speed and power. A hard worker, yes, but that moment… It was strange.
A few days later, the class moved onto the leaf concentration exercise. A fundamental step in chakra control. She explained the principle, demonstrated it effortlessly. Most students struggled, leaves fluttering to the ground. She watched Yuuki. He took a leaf, closed his eyes, a look of concentration on his face. The leaf stuck. Immediately. Perfectly stable, resting flat against his forehead. No wobbling, no flickering.
Midori felt a jolt of surprise. On the first try? That level of instant, perfect control at this age was almost unheard of without dedicated private tutelage from birth. But then, he opened his eyes, a carefully constructed frown of frustration on his face, and deliberately cut the chakra flow, letting the leaf fall. He picked it up and went through the motions of struggling, just like the others.
He could do it. He could do it perfectly, instantly, and he was deliberately hiding it. Why? The strange observation from the spar, the hidden chakra control… this wasn't just a talented child. This was something else. A red flag, fluttering subtly in the corner of her vision. From that moment on, Midori began watching Yuuki Kagurazaka more intently. Discreetly.
Over the next month, she observed him constantly within the confines of the Academy. In taijutsu drills, his technique began to improve rapidly, showing he could learn the forms when he chose to focus on them, integrating them with his natural speed and power. In subsequent routine spars, she looked for it. The subtle shift. And she saw it again. A fleeting change in his form during a sudden dodge, a brief thickening of muscles before a particularly strong block. The only thing that came to mind was a bloodline limit, but unlike any she had ever encountered or read about.
Her decision to give him the bokken wasn't just a reward for improvement or an encouragement of interest. It was a calculated investment. If he had a bloodline, he was an asset. Fostering his growth benefited Konoha, especially with tensions rising. And giving him a structured physical activity like kenjutsu practice might make the manifestation of this subtle ability more predictable, easier to observe, and provide more data. It also built a rapport, making him less likely to hide things from her. She purchased the wooden wakizashi with her own funds; the potential discovery felt that important.
After a month of careful, discreet observation within the Academy, the evidence was compelling enough. The subtle shifts, the hidden chakra control, the rapid, unnatural physical progress – this wasn't normal. This was potentially a unique bloodline user. That wasn't something an Academy chūnin kept to herself during wartime. She had to report it to the highest authority. She made the formal request for a meeting with the Hokage, requesting it bypass the usual channels due to the potential significance and sensitivity. She knew such requests took time, especially now. Pragmatically, she also didn't want anyone else to notice before the Hokage was informed and potentially try to take credit.
The request was logged, and she settled in for the waiting period, continuing her observations. His progress in taijutsu, ninjutsu fundamentals, even the dedication he showed with the bokken she gave him – it was undeniable. He was strong, getting stronger, and hiding a significant part of his capability. Her conviction that this was a bloodline, a discovery of immense potential for the village, only hardened during that month of waiting. She was ready to present her case.

He had finally received the report from Midori Hana, an Academy chūnin known for her diligent instruction but rarely requesting direct audience. Her request, bypassing standard channels due to perceived urgency, had caught his attention.
He read through her detailed account. Observations from sparring assessments, chakra control lessons, taijutsu drills, even discrete observations of the student's private training habits. The core claims were startling: a civilian-born orphan, Yuuki Kagurazaka, demonstrating subtle, rapid physical self-manipulation – muscles briefly thinning for speed, thickening for power – and deliberately hiding a high level of innate chakra control. Midori hypothesized a unique, unknown bloodline limit.
The "Professor" in Hiruzen was instantly intrigued. A bloodline granting physical self-manipulation? The implications were immense, from combat applications to potentially understanding the limits of the human body itself. His mind raced with possibilities, the scholar's inherent desire to understand the unknown surging. Bring him in! Test every aspect! Document it!
But the "Leader," the pragmatic Hokage, ruthlessly suppressed that urge. Why is he hiding it? Midori's report emphasized the child deliberately masking his abilities, feigning struggle. This pointed to fear. Fear of being discovered, of the ability itself, or fear of what might happen to him if others found out. If the child was scared, rushing in, forcing the issue, could be disastrous. It could make him distrustful of Konoha, resentful, potentially drive him to suppress or abandon the ability, or even turn him into a flight risk if he felt threatened. A frightened, powerful individual was unpredictable.
Midori noted his self-inflicted, grueling training. The child pushed himself harder than most active-duty shinobi. Perhaps he already understood the danger his ability represented if other villages discovered it. Perhaps he feared being weak and unable to protect himself, so he sought strength relentlessly, in secret.
The Leader's pragmatism won the initial internal debate. He needed more information, but subtly. He assigned a highly skilled, completely undetectable ANBU operative to discreetly observe Yuuki Kagurazaka outside the Academy. The ANBU's mission: confirm Midori's observations regarding physical shifts and hidden abilities during the child's private time, report on his character, his motivations as inferred from behavior, and crucially, his interactions with peers and instructors outside of class. Absolute discretion was paramount.
Weeks turned into months. The ANBU reports filtered in, confirming Midori's findings and adding layers of detail. Yes, the subtle, fleeting physical shifts were real, deliberate, and used to enhance his speed, power, or durability during intense private training. Yes, he deliberately underperformed in specific areas at the Academy to appear merely "promising" rather than exceptional. His private training was indeed brutal, utilizing makeshift heavy weights, pushing his body to astonishing limits. The ANBU inferred a pragmatic, quiet character, focused intensely on self-improvement.
Crucially, the reports highlighted his interactions and the bonds he was forming within the village. Hayate Gekko and Yugao Uzuki – names known in Konoha for families with deep, longstanding ties to the village's history and specialized skills (Gekko with Kenjutsu, Uzuki families with Konoha defense forces, including ANBU support lineages). The reports also noted his complex interactions, which evolved over time, with Anko Mitarashi and Kurenai Yuhi – children from well-known shinobi lineages themselves. The child was making friends. Strong friendships that tied him to Konoha in a significant way.
If he hadn't had these burgeoning bonds, if the ANBU reports had described a solitary, withdrawn child with a dangerous secret, the Leader in Hiruzen might have been forced to interfere more directly, bringing the child under stricter observation or control for the village's security. But these friendships were anchors. They were a reason for the child to stay, a reason for him to potentially be loyal to Konoha. For now, he was letting the child build his own foundation. After several months confirming the ability and the child's nature, and with the simmering war requiring more resources, the ANBU surveillance on Yuuki was discreetly lifted; those valuable assets were needed elsewhere.
Then, the time skip happened, and a year passed since Midori's initial report. The war had moved from a shadow conflict to an open declaration, and Konoha suffered a significant blow. News arrived of a devastating attack – Iwa's Explosion Corps hitting a vital supply line, guarded by skilled shinobi. Casualties were heavy. The need for more shinobi on the front lines, or at least filling essential support and garrison roles to free up experienced fighters, became acute.
Hiruzen reviewed the village's current roster and the Academy's graduating class prospects. They needed new genin teams. Not cannon fodder to be thrown away, but those who, with a competent Jonin sensei, possessed the base skills and resilience for a reasonable chance of surviving and becoming effective shinobi after a few months of real-world experience. His mind immediately went to potential early graduation candidates. His own son, Asuma – a highly skilled, capable shinobi ready for leadership. (Hiruzen wrestled briefly with the personal implications of sending his son to the front lines, a hesitant but ultimately necessary decision). Other clan prodigies were nearing readiness, expected to graduate early anyway due to years of intense private training.
And then there were the reports on Yuuki Kagurazaka and Anko Mitarashi, specifically recommended by Midori Hana and corroborated by the initial ANBU findings. Anko, while not possessing Yuuki's unique abilities, was physically powerful, aggressive, and skilled in taijutsu – easily on par with a fresh Genin. She lacked real combat experience, which the Academy couldn't provide. Yuuki… with his base physicals now rivalling chunin before even activating his ability, and the vast potential his bloodline offered, was clearly ready.
The thought of pairing them arose. Why? Because of the ANBU report on his bonds. Yuuki had formed friendships, yes, but his most intense, most developed dynamic outside of Hayate and Yugao was his rivalry-turned-grudging-respect with Anko. Graduating Yuuki alone, ripping him away from the Academy and the friendships he'd formed without any familiar anchor, could isolate him. It could make him feel like a tool, breed resentment, potentially leading him to rely solely on his hidden abilities and distrust the village structure. Graduating him with Anko, who he had a clear, established (albeit contentious) relationship with, kept a familiar element. It utilized Anko's readiness while providing Yuuki with a known quantity, making the transition slightly less jarring. It also paired two individuals with immense raw potential and aggressive styles.
But a genin team needed three members, plus a Jonin sensei. Who would be the third? It couldn't be Hayate, Yugao, or Kurenai yet; the ANBU reports, even a year ago, had indicated they weren't physically or mentally resilient enough for early graduation even with wartime pressure. They needed more time to build their foundations. Could Asuma be the third member, leading this unconventional team? It was a distinct possibility. Pairing his solid skill and lineage with Yuuki's raw potential and Anko's aggressive talent would create an extremely potent, albeit potentially volatile, team under his son's command.
Hiruzen looked over the assembled documents, the potential team configurations swirling in his mind. The weight of the war pressed down, demanding difficult decisions. He needed to give this more thought, specifically who the third member would be, and which experienced Jonin sensei would be capable of leading such a unique and high-potential team safely and effectively in a rapidly escalating conflict.
For the sensei, he had a sudden, clear idea. A small smile touched his lips. Who better to guide such a team, particularly one with a member possessing a potentially unique biological ability? His thoughts went to his ideal student, a researcher in his own right, brilliant and unconventional. Orochimaru. Orochimaru's scientific mind and deep understanding of the body would make him uniquely suited to guide Yuuki, perhaps helping the child understand and better utilize his subtle, shifting ability without fear. Anko, with her aggressive nature and potential, should also flourish under Orochimaru's tutelage; he understood pushing limits. Yes, Orochimaru would be the ideal Jonin sensei for this group.

Bet y’all did NOT see that choice of sensei coming, did you? Well, you might have. I hope my reasoning for Hiruzen not dragging Yuuki into his office was reasonable. Yuuki has bonds in the village - He is aware of the danger that he might be in and has been seen pushing himself. As for Early Graduation - he is not going to be sent straight to war with a kunai in his hand.
I would also like to apologise for such a small chapter! Unfortunately, I’ve been rather preoccupied with a lot of IRL matters. That’s not really a good excuse though, so the aim is to upload twice next week on Wednesday and then the normal weekend upload.
