Devlog Update: Web Version, New Enemy Types, Spawn Mechanisms, and Alpha Progress
In this update, I’ve designed nine new enemies, developed a web version of the game for itch.io browser testing, and implemented several UI enhancements in preparation for the upcoming alpha release.
Poll Results: Patron-Exclusive Customization Options
The latest poll results are in! As you can see, the transformation feature won by a landslide. While the current focus is primarily on preparing for the open alpha, I wanted to introduce a basic transformation mechanism beforehand. I agree that it adds significant depth to the game - ranging from minor mutations that aid progression and offer cosmetic customization (like animal ears or tails) to full-body transformations that fundamentally alter the protagonist's life.
Note: The example above is WIP; Color palettes and concepts are subject to change based on this weeks poll results.
To implement this, we need distinct forms to work toward and specific ways to mutate the player progressively. Here are some examples of the enemy designs:
These enemies are localized to specific areas of the map, appearing in their own unique groups and types, distinct from the standard random encounter pool. "Elite" variants are capable of stacking "mutation" on the player; once enough stacks are accumulated, the transformation begins.
Players can mitigate these stacks using certain drugs or by waiting over time, though these methods come with their own risks, such as increased addiction rates and various side effects. Once the transformation reaches the maximum level, the player achieves a "perfect" version of that form, unlocking new functionalities while permanently locking certain options that are incompatible with that form.
The nature of these transformations remains ambiguous - whether they are physical reality or simply vivid, hallucinatory effects caused by the potent jungle soil. Regardless of their origin, the transformations have very real consequences, forcing the player to manage their descent into madness to survive the jungle.
Web Version Development
The web version of the game has been successfully ported! While this provides greater accessibility, allowing users on non-Windows platforms to play, there are some limitations: heavy shaders are disabled due to web functionality constraints, and there may be minor inconsistencies with font sizing and animation speeds. Consequently, I plan to position the web version as an "online support" variant on itch.io rather than a full, official port.
Alpha Release Progression
As mentioned last week, the alpha release is progressing well. The game page is nearly complete, and I am currently finalizing the UI updates. While this is primarily a functional update with less emphasis on new content, I believe establishing clear ways to access and promote the game is critical for its continued development.
Thank you all for your ongoing support. I look forward to diving back into major content updates immediately following the open alpha launch.
New Community Poll: Defining the 'Critical Point' Transformation
I have finished implementing the new enemy spawning mechanism, leaving the transformation system as the final piece to tackle. Before I move forward, I’d like to run a poll to ensure the system aligns with your preferences.
The "Critical Point Transformation" will allow the protagonist to shift into one of the target species, granting unique attributes. However, we face a design trade-off regarding the player interface: retaining the base player structure allows for compatibility with clothing and standard actions, but limits the scope of the transformation (e.g., "short stack" mutations). A full-body transformation allows for more dramatic changes, such as replacing legs with fins or adding 'short stack' body types to go, but would restrict equipment compatibility.
Q. How would you like the 'Critical Point' transformation to be implemented?
Maintain Base Design: Retain the player's base structure to ensure full compatibility with equipment and interactions, focusing on minor mutations (e.g., horns, tails).
Full-Body Transformation: Allow for significant physical changes (e.g., replacing legs with mermaid fins), accepting that this will limit or restrict certain base-body actions and clothing compatibility.
No 'Critical Point' Transformation: Maintain the current, more grounded approach to transformation to preserve the integrity of the base character design.
