Habitat & Range
A temperate-woodland species found across central and western Aethelgard wherever there is hollow standing timber to nest in. They are most reliably found in the mixed pine-and-oak forests of the Karth valley, the Vesperian near-forest, and the older hedgerow trees of long-settled farmland. They avoid open plains, marshland, and the colder pine-only stands above the foothills.
Unlike honeybees, glimmerwasps do not require flowering meadows to thrive, their diet is carnivorous (see Behaviour). What they require is shelter: a deep hollow in a standing tree, an abandoned woodpecker chamber gnawed wider, or a sheltered cliff crevice with the right airflow. A nest site, once established, is reused by successive clusters for years.
A village with a known glimmerwasp nest in its near-forest is, on balance, lucky. The nectar is valuable, the meat eaten by the wasps is mostly carrion and small vermin, and the smaller nests are quietly worked by anyone with the affinity edge to handle them. The trouble starts only when a nest is left undisturbed long enough to grow past the cluster threshold (see Behaviour).
Size & Physical Description
A glimmerwasp ranges in body length from roughly the size of a house cat — for the smaller adults of a young cluster — to that of a medium dog at the upper end, for a mature alpha male of a large nest. Wingspan in flight is correspondingly substantial; a fully grown specimen on the wing is unmistakable for any common insect and is more often misidentified at distance as a small bird.
The build is recognisably wasp-form: a narrow waist, three distinct body segments, six segmented legs ending in fine gripping hooks, two pairs of membranous wings, and a paired set of long antennae. The chitin is plated rather than shelled — flexible at the joints, rigid across the dorsal segments — and runs from pale amber on the smaller cluster adults to a deep mahogany on older specimens. The wings are translucent with a faint mother-of-pearl iridescence visible only in direct light.
The defining feature, and the source of the common name, is the bioluminescent abdomen. Concentrated mana of the species' Light affinity is held in the same swollen abdominal sac that stores the nectar (see Drops & Uses), and the sac glows faintly through the chitin in a soft amber-gold pulse, timed to the wasp's breathing. The glow is dim in full sun and easy to overlook in dappled light, but at dusk, in deep cover, or inside a nest hollow it is the most reliable identification mark the species offers. A cluster of glimmerwasps at rest inside a hollow tree at twilight is reported by every hunter who has seen one as a quietly remarkable sight.
A mature alpha male carries the additional feature of a paired set of dorsal crest-plates along the back of the thorax, raised slightly above the line of the body and tinted darker than the worker chitin. These plates flush briefly brighter when the alpha is agitated and are the most reliable visual marker of which member of a large nest is the dominant breeder.
Behaviour
Glimmerwasps do not form hives. This is the single most important fact about the species, and the one most frequently misunderstood by hunters trained on honeybee analogy.
A glimmerwasp nest is properly called a cluster: a small breeding unit of between two and six adults of mixed sex, sharing a hollow and cooperatively raising the season's young. The split of males and females within a cluster is not fixed; a typical small cluster is one or two breeding pairs plus an additional adult or two — often siblings of the previous year's brood who have not yet dispersed. All adults share the work of foraging, feeding the young, and defending the entrance. There is no sterile worker caste, no queen, and no obligate division of labour.
Larger nests do occur — clusters of ten or more adults, occasionally as many as twenty — and these are the dangerous ones. Once a nest passes roughly eight to ten adults, an alpha male emerges and consolidates breeding rights over the resident females. The alpha is visibly larger than the others, carries the developed dorsal crest-plates noted above, and is the only breeding male of the nest. He does not, however, organise the others' labour in any meaningful sense — the species lacks the social architecture of a true hive, and a large nest is best understood as a cluster that has simply grown until one male can dominate it, not as a transition to colonial structure.
Crepuscular, with peak activity at dawn and dusk. Diurnal flight is reduced in full midday sun and almost absent in heavy rain or strong wind. The wasps return to the nest at full dark and remain inside until first light.
Diet is the defining oddity of the species. Glimmerwasps are obligate carnivores. They take small live prey — beetles, grubs, smaller insects, the occasional fledgling bird — and feed by tearing and chewing, returning to the nest with carried meat or with the food already begun to be processed in the throat. Carrion is taken readily; a glimmerwasp cluster will work a small carcass left in the forest until nothing remains but cleaned bone.
The processed meat is then converted, within the abdominal sac, into a thick golden nectar that bears no chemical resemblance to its source material. The biological mechanism is poorly understood and remains an active area of interest for the scholarly apothecary trade. What is empirically established: a single mature wasp can produce a finger's depth of nectar over an evening of feeding, the nectar is stored in the same sac that holds the affinity-mana glow, and the conversion process appears to be the principal reason the species exists at the high mana density it does. The nectar is not produced from pollen, and a glimmerwasp will starve to death in a flower meadow.
A disturbed cluster will pour out of the entrance to defend the nest. Cluster adults sting; the alpha and senior females sting harder and with greater coordination. The sting is venomous and painful — survivable for a fit adult, lethal for the very young, the very old, and those with a particular constitutional sensitivity recognised by apothecaries — but the real danger is volume. A swarm out of a ten-adult nest can deliver thirty to forty stings in under a minute. Two welts is a hard lesson; ten is hospital country; thirty is a coffin.
