🎸 The Perfect Practice System (4-Layer Routine)
Hey everyone!
Today’s new Guitar Academy lesson is all about something that completely changed the way I practice guitar:
Practice structure.
For many years my practice sessions were pretty random. I would sit down with the guitar and think:
“What should I practice today?”
So I would jump between:
• scales• licks• exercises• songs
And although it felt productive, my progress was much slower than it should have been.
Once I started studying how skill learning and motor training actually work, I realized something important:
The problem wasn’t practice time.
It was practice structure.

The routine I use now follows four layers:
1️⃣ Warm-UpPrepare the hands and nervous system with controlled movements.
2️⃣ TechniqueTrain a specific mechanic with focused exercises.
3️⃣ IntegrationApply the mechanic in musical patterns.
4️⃣ MusicUse the skill in songs, improvisation, or writing.
Each layer prepares the next one, which makes practice sessions much more efficient and focused.
Exercises Organized For You
To make this easy to follow, I organized some of the best Guitar Academy exercises into these four layers so you can immediately build a structured routine.
Many of the exercises come from recent practice systems like:
• 7-Day Pickslanting Masterclass• Anti-Random Practice Package• Speed training routines
This way you don’t have to guess which exercises to use - the routine is already structured for you.
Give the routine a try in your next practice session and let me know how it works for you!
Have fun practicing 🎸
