Glimpses fifty five

The Association of Amateur Immortalists' funding was separate from the Fairfax family accounts. In part because those family accounts haven’t existed in forty years. The manor, a budget for food at association events, and even a pot to piss in existed only because of those trustee funds that set strict requirements for disbursement, like no membership fees for The Academy students. A decaying legacy of a decaying family tied to a decaying book that Milwep Fairfax operated because the only other option was to beg on the streets. So much of a dead-end position, the whole place might as well be his mausoleum if his body already wasn’t debt promised to the Ricort Healers Association.

But that girl changed everything.

“I can’t believe you made her Association Archivist,”  Bellwether complained.

The association held other leadership positions, and Bellwether ensured the events were run in accordance with the charter, so they received the funds. True believers were useful that way.

“As president, I get to make emergency appointments to open positions.” Milwep reminded the man. He was already missing the big picture. Their membership rolls were already up ten percent. More members meant they could request more funds from the bank.

“But that means she’ll have access to The Book.” He hissed.

Milwep had to bite his tongue from calling the thing an old lump of coal. Saren Byerly did have a reputation that brought people here. Even if no one from the guild or Academy ever certified the item as authentic, neither did they say it was fake. It was mostly damaged to the point where those with the skills to maybe repair it were too expensive, or had no interest.

As long as this White girl let the Association recruit from her name, nothing else mattered. If things went well, then he’d have a second pot to piss in. Bellwether only needed not to ruin it.

“She’s a first-year student. Even as a Tertiary, it is unlikely she has the skills to pass the requirements to gain access to it. In fact, I’ll give you the final seal of approval on allowing her to access the book after repairing whatever you bring in. That way, even you can’t complain. I know we’ve had a string of bad luck for a long time, but this time, everything’s coming up Milwep.”
