The story as told here begins in August 1989 in the garage of the Cooper house. The actual beginning is not quite so clear. One could argue that the telling might begin in August 1989 or perhaps far into the future in June 2026. It is genuinely difficult to say exactly where this tale starts or ends.
I slipped and smashed my head hard on the edge of a wooden worktable while I was in the garage. I bled over the concrete floor and gave myself a nasty concussion. Right there, my life changed abruptly. I used to be a normal but rather quiet fourteen year old kid, yet that accident changed me fundamentally. The impact awakened the memories of an entirely different man from a completely different universe. It was maybe more than just memories, feeling almost as if two distinct souls had seamlessly merged into one vessel.
It was a jarring experience for a solid month. I was admitted to hospital for a few days. It took me that long just to come to terms with my new reality. I eventually realized that I was living in the Young Sheldon universe. I had never actually watched the spin off show in my past life, just The Big Bang Theory, and I kind of wished I had paid more attention to it now. Still, I was not overly terrified because this was just a normal slice of life world without any world ending threats.
Charlie Cooper. That was my name now. My mother mentioned that I inherited my grandfather's name, while my twin brother Georgie got his name from our father. It was a bizarre coincidence that the guy from the other universe also had Charlie as his name.
That other Charlie was eighteen years old when he died from a terminal illness. He had been confined to a hospital bed for a very long time, and his family only visited him once a month. That Charlie was a special boy. Special meant severely autistic, somewhat like a Rain Man kind of savant. It seems that I inherited that man's unique cognitive abilities, but thankfully without all the severe negative drawbacks.
It feels as though our two minds balanced each other out perfectly.
The East Texas heat hung thick and heavy over Medford in the late summer of 1989. Inside the Cooper household, however, the real friction was centered right at the dinner table.
Sheldon Cooper, my nine year old brother who usually acted more like a cynical old man, came to the table after receiving a threat from my sister Missy about a licked toothbrush. I already knew for a fact that she actually did lick his toothbrush. It was time for grace. Sheldon sat next to Georgie, and I sat right between Georgie and Missy.
Missy was currently eyeing Sheldon with the predatory patience of a hunting hawk. Georgie sat with his face perpetually locked in a deep scowl of teenage resentment. Or maybe because of the new development with sheldon.
"Hands, everybody," Mary Cooper announced. Her voice carried the warm but unyielding authority of a Southern mother who knew her way around both a tater tot casserole and a Bible.
Sheldon sighed, letting out a short, sharp exhale of profound inconvenience. He reached into his lap and retrieved a pair of thick, blue winter mittens, slipping them over his small hands with practiced efficiency.
George Senior slumped slightly at the head of the table in his coaching polo and rubbed his temples. "Sheldon, it is ninety degrees outside. Take the mittens off."
"I cannot, Dad," Sheldon replied. His voice held a high, precise cadence that brokered absolutely no argument. "The human hand is a festering petri dish of pathogens. Georgie was just scratching his armpits, and I saw Missy pick her nose earlier today."
"I did not!" Missy lied smoothly, delivering a swift kick to his shin under the table.
"You did. Second knuckle deep," Sheldon corrected, while complaining about the attack to mom.
Mary intervened before her husband's blood pressure could spike any higher.
“Missy, don't hit your brother”
"George, just let him wear the mittens. Lord knows we have bigger fish to fry with school starting tomorrow. Now, bow your heads."
Mary began her prayer, earnestly asking the Lord for guidance and protection in the coming school year.
Georgie junior glared at the ceiling. ‘Guidance’ Georgie thought bitterly,’ was not going to save him from the impending nightmare’.
Tomorrow, his nine year old brother was not just starting another mundane year of elementary school. Because of his freakish test scores, Sheldon was skipping straight to the ninth grade. That was Georgie's grade. It was an absolute social death sentence. It was already far too much for him to attend the same classes with his twin brother Charlie. I used to be just a weird and quiet kid, but I changed when the accident happened last month and became far too quiet and observant for Georgie's liking. But he could still tolerate me but sheldon was another kind of problem.
Mary was praying silently in her mind for the wellbeing of all her kids, but especially for me and Sheldon. We were both facing unique challenges that she simply did not know how to help us with, and it only made her worry more. Sheldon at least let her know exactly what was going on in his highly active head. I, on the other hand, always just told her that things were okay. It was incredibly hard for a mother not to worry.
George Senior looked across the dinner table at his three sons and let out a heavy internal sigh. He could already tell that this upcoming school year was going to be incredibly troublesome for the whole family.
He genuinely did not understand his kids most of the time. He desperately wanted to bond with them and find some common ground, but the gaps between them felt vast and unbridgeable.
Georgie junior might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but George senior still had something easy and familiar to connect with him over, like high school football and fixing cars.
Sheldon was an entirely different story. He was a deeply special boy with a brilliant mind George could not even begin to comprehend. Still, George held onto a small sliver of hope that being in the same high school might somehow bring them closer together.
Charlie remained a completely confusing puzzle that George still had to figure out. George had absolutely no idea what to do with him. Charlie had changed significantly after the accident. He was not bothering anyone the way Sheldon often did, but he was also very different from his twin brother. He was not a simpleton like Georgie jr.
Mary had strictly forbidden George from ever making Charlie play football again. She genuinely feared the brutal sport would do much more harm to Charlie after his severe head injury.
Fortunately for George, the accident had not happened during an actual football practice. If he had been the one making Charlie play when that head injury occurred, Mary would have undoubtedly killed him on the spot. Mary also forbade Charlie from playing football ever again to which he was grateful since he was never good at it anyway.
"Are you not excited that all three of you brothers are going to attend the exact same class?" Mary asked, desperately trying to lighten the heavy mood at the table. Her attempt actually made Georgie jr. sour mood worsen considerably.
"How can I be excited when he will be going to the same grade as I am?" Georgie replied with pure teenage misery pointing his spoon at Sheldon.
"Do not worry, I do not plan to stay there much longer," Sheldon retorted back with his usual supreme confidence. While starting at both Charlie and Georgie.
"I do not care either way," I said quietly.
"You are going to get killed out there," Missy added, eagerly offering her two cents to annoy Sheldon.
"High school is a sacred haven for higher learning," Sheldon stated solemnly.
I let out a loud laugh at that absurd statement, and Dad immediately started laughing right along with me.
Later on, Mom asked everyone to join her at church. Naturally, only Sheldon agreed willingly. Missy was forcibly dragged along by her ear, but I quickly made up a believable excuse just like Georgie and Dad did. We were successfully saved from attending the Sunday service.

I was never very religious and did not really believe in a higher power, but that mindset changed completely later that night.
Deep in my sleep, I saw a massive gacha wheel materializing in my dream. There was nothing around except white. It was all white. I noticed a heavy metal lever situated right near me, and my instincts immediately told me that I had to pull it. The sheer scale of the giant wheel was utterly incomprehensible. It stretched out as far as my eyes could see. Suddenly, it began to move and spin. The rapid rotation created incredibly high pressure winds, and I was absolutely certain that I would have been blown completely away if I was not anchored inside a dream.
After an unknown amount of time had passed, the massive structure finally stopped spinning. I could clearly see the giant glowing pointer resting on a specific prize.
[Will Hunting’s Intelligence]
There was also a small line of text written directly under the heavy lever.
[90 days cooldown]
I woke up drenched in a cold sweat, initially believing it was just another bizarre dream and that I was safely tucked away in my small room. However, my world violently exploded as I physically felt my brain shifting into absolute overdrive. A profound, fundamental change rippled through my entire being.
Suddenly, I was processing half a dozen complex thoughts simultaneously without any mental strain whatsoever. My calculation speed surged astronomically, making my mind feel as though a heavy fog had been permanently lifted. Concepts that had previously baffled me now unspooled with crystal clarity. I used to be slightly above average, but this sheer processing power felt like the raw, unfiltered cognition of a true genius.
As I looked around the dim shadows of my bedroom, every single texture and detail leaped out at me, making it feel as if I was truly seeing the world for the very first time.
I quickly realized that the surreal experience was not just a passing dream. I had actually received a cheat ability, exactly like the transmigrators in the fictional stories I used to read. I also vividly remembered that ninety day cooldown warning. It meant I would likely get the chance to pull the lever and spin that magnificent wheel all over again in exactly three months.
I recognized the name Will hunting from my past life immediately. Will Hunting was the polymathic genius from the movie Good Will Hunting. It seemed I had inherited his raw cognitive processing power without acquiring any of the emotional baggage attached to his traumatic memories. I also did not possess his prior academic knowledge or life experiences. I simply received the pure intelligence required to learn absolutely anything rapidly. I was genuinely happy about this limitation, as it meant I remained myself.
"Charlie, breakfast!"
I heard Missy yelling for me from the hallway. I immediately threw off the covers and got up from my bed. I did not fully understand what had secretly triggered my cheat system or why it had specifically awakened today of all days, but this morning clearly had to be something incredibly special. [AN: First episode of Young Sheldon]
Today was the very first day of high school, so I quickly headed down to the kitchen to eat my breakfast.
