DESCRIPTION

Welcome to the latest episode of Past Games, a Patreon-exclusive monthly series that uncovers the histories of 2026's biggest and most consequential gaming anniversaries.

2026 is the 25th anniversary of Animal Crossing, though it's unlikely (to say the least) that you played the very first entry. Dōbutsu no Mori debuted in Japan on April 14, 2001, and Nintendo of Japan assumed, ahead of launch, that the "communication" game would never be localized for the United States.

Of course, we know things went differently. Years later, Animal Crossing debuted in the US and Europe on GameCube. Who convinced Nintendo to localize the quirky life-simulator? Why did Nintendo assume Western audiences wouldn't be interested? And how did a tiny team in Nintendo of America adapt the massive script for English-speaking audiences?

This episode has all the answers!

Today's guest is Kelsey Lewin. She is an author, a video game historian, and the co-owner of Pink Gorilla Games. You can hear on the wonderful podcast, Pew Pew Bang.

Kelsey is also a second-time guest on Post Games, first appearing way back in Episode 3 to talk about the history of Nintendo console launches and what it was like as a game store owner preparing for the release of Nintendo Switch 2.

Kelsey defies introductions because she’s done so much. For example, she previously served as co-director of the Video Game History Foundation. And in 2024, she published the first substantial English-language history book on the original Animal Crossing.

I’d read her book at release, but recently listened to the excellent audiobook edition and was surprised all over again by the magical way this series came together, beginning with inspiration from the last video game you’d expect.

But I won’t spoil that.
