DESCRIPTION

Kage sat against the upper tier row with his spine braced on the limestone behind him and let it collect through the back of the longcoat while the amphitheater moved.

The remaining spectators went at their own pace. A few crouched at the stage to inspect the reconstruction seams where fresh stone had knitted itself into the ancient structure as though it had always been there. Whatever they were looking for, they weren't bothering him. He gave them a few seconds and opened the first skill tree.

---

[SKILL TREE: THE WORDLESS STRIKE]

A combat tree built around a single principle: the blade is a writing instrument. Every strike, parry, redirect, and step is a syllable. A complete sequence of correctly structured physical actions is a keyword combination. The tree does not interface with the Poet's existing Forms. It operates beneath them, a separate composition layer that runs through the body rather than the mind, governed by its own coherence logic and the same Lexicon requirements as any other verse, delivered entirely through steel.

---

Core Mechanic: The Physical Lexicon

Every keyword in the Poet's Lexicon has a corresponding physical expression - a specific action type the system maps to it. The mapping derives from the keyword's meaning.

Expression Examples:

[Strike] maps to an offensive action: a cut, a thrust, a committed forward movement.

[Bind] maps to a constraining action: a parry that traps, a redirect that controls the opponent's weapon.

[Weaken] maps to a precision action targeting a specific weak point: joint, gap in armor, overextended limb.

[Rest] maps to deliberate stillness: a held position, a breath, a conscious pause within an exchange.

[Memory] maps to a repeated action: performing the exact same motion twice in sequence, the body citing itself.

The Poet does not assign these mappings; the system derives them from the Lexicon's existing logic. As keyword Resonance increases, the physical expression broadens. A keyword at low Resonance has one valid physical expression; a keyword at high Resonance has several.

Physical verses carry no Title. They bypass the targeting and intent declaration that verse-crafting requires. Physical verses are assessed on what they are, not what the Poet meant them to be.

Awen Cost: Each Physical Verse costs 75 Awen for the first keyword. Each additional keyword doubles the total cost.

---

Coherence: How Keywords Combine

Two or more keywords delivered physically must satisfy two simultaneous conditions for the system to recognize them as a valid combination:

Logical Causality: Each keyword action must be a natural physical consequence of the one before it. The sequence must make sense as a chain of actions.

Thematic Compatibility: Keywords must share conceptual territory.

Both conditions must be satisfied simultaneously. A sequence that makes physical sense but pairs conceptually incompatible keywords fails. A sequence with compatible keywords but no causal logic between actions fails. The Poet needs to understand their keywords well enough to know which ones combine cleanly before the fight begins. Mastery of the keyword in language and understanding of its essence translates directly into mastery of the keyword in steel.

Composing a Physical Verse

Actions must be performed in sequence without interruption. A hit taken mid-sequence breaks the composition and spends half the Awen cost of whatever was completed up to that point, with no effect. The system displays no progress bar. The Poet knows where they are in the sequence, or they do not. No partial credit. When the final action in a valid sequence lands, the combination detonates.

Convergence Interaction:

At Focused (34+) and Converged (67+): The system suggests keyword mappings through sword lines shown in the air, harmonic resonances indicating when a physical action would complete a valid composition. The Poet can follow or ignore them.

At Mushin (100): This guidance disappears. The suggestions are no longer needed.

---

SKILLS:

[One Breath] (Flagship)

Unlocks the Physical Lexicon and enables two-keyword physical combinations. The foundation the rest of the tree builds on.

The Opening Syllable: The first keyword in any physical composition permanently alters the Poet's physical stats for the duration of that sequence. The system forces the body to harmonize with the intent of the opening word.

Lexicon Examples:

If opened with [Strike]: Poet's blade gains +20% Armor Penetration until the sequence ends.

If opened with [Bind]: Poet's physical mass and stagger-resistance double, making him impossible to interrupt or knock back while he finishes the sentence.

A blade is no longer a blade. Every exchange is a potential composition.

---

[The Third Line]

Extends physical composition to three-keyword sequences and fundamentally upgrades the parsing logic. The physical syllables are no longer required to be immediately consecutive.

The Suspended Sequence: The Poet may open a composition with the first keyword, engage in normal combat exchanges (unmapped actions, basic footwork, feints, and standard deflections), and land the subsequent keywords later in the exchange. The sequence remains "open" and suspended until the third keyword detonates it or a failure state is reached.

The Rule of Connective Tissue: While the Poet can insert normal actions between keywords, those actions act as the grammatical punctuation of the sentence. They must structurally sustain the Logical Causality of the verse.

If the opponent fully disengages, resets the neutral state, or the Poet retreats, the physical "causality" of the sentence is severed.

---

[Continuous Verse]

Allows physical combinations to chain. The final action of one sequence becomes the first action of the next if the keyword mapping satisfies both coherence conditions simultaneously.

The Awen cost of the subsequent combination is reduced by 30% if the chain is valid.

Enjambment: Every time The Poet successfully chains a completed physical verse directly into a new one, he gains a stacking +7% Action Speed and +7% Attack Damage buff. There is no cap to this buff. It lasts until the chain is broken, an attack is mitigated, or he stops.

The Poet does not reset between sequences. The steel keeps writing.

---

[Residual Truth] (Passive)

Physical keyword combinations leave a faint imprint on the target, a fraction of each keyword's meaning that persists past the combination's duration. Any subsequent composition sharing a keyword with an active imprint gains a bonus to effect magnitude proportional to how recently the imprint was applied. The keyword has already been established as true on this target. The next time it appears, the target's resistance to it is already partially dissolved.

The Echo: The Poet can choose to strike an active imprint with a precise, normal attack. Doing so shatters the imprint early, dealing a burst of raw Truth Damage and instantly restoring a massive chunk of Awen based on the shattered keyword's Resonance.

(System Note: Activating Residual Truth explicitly bypasses the "One Absolute Rule" penalty.)

---

[The Retrospective] (Capstone)

Every fight is a composition.

From the moment of first contact, the system has been logging every physical action, every keyword mapped to steel, every exchange that carried intent. The log exists whether or not the Poet is aware of it. The Retrospective is the ability to close it deliberately.

Activation: At any point in a fight, the Poet declares a Title.

Effect: The system looks backward through the fight's full physical action log and searches for every keyword action that coheres with the declared Title. It assembles the strongest structurally valid combination it can construct from what actually occurred—the actions the Poet genuinely took, in the order they took them, assessed against the Title's declared intent. Everything that fits is included. Everything that does not is discarded. The resulting combination detonates.

Awen Calculation: Assessed at detonation as a single macro-composition cost. Minimum Awen threshold: 400. Insufficient reserves cause the ability to fail entirely. If Awen covers a partial combination, it detonates at that scale.

The Retrospective rewards fighting with intention from the first exchange. Every action taken before it is declared was already part of the verse. The Poet simply decides when to end the sentence.

---

He read the whole thing twice. Then he read it again. One more time than he usually needed.

Steganography.

That was the first word. No declaration window. No verbal component. No cast animation an opponent could read. The enemy watched a swordfight. The system read a verse. Nobody outside the exchange knew what was being composed until the combination completed and reality answered it, and by then, they were already inside the effect.

From a pure information standpoint, this was a significantly better answer than anything he'd been running. Physical verses required nothing from his mind that wasn't already happening in a fight.

The cost structure: first keyword, 75 Awen. Second, 150 total. Third, 300 total. Steep in isolation. At Sharpened, the twenty percent discount on physical action verses brought the three-keyword cost to 240. He ran it against his current pool—1360 Awen, the Artistry conversion ticking steadily—and found five full three-keyword sequences before the reservoir ran dry. More with any mid-fight recovery. Workable against strong single targets, sustainable with proper management, given he could just keep using one keyword compositions.

The coherence requirement was where the mechanic lived or failed.

Logical causality and thematic compatibility, both simultaneously. He worked through the Lexicon in his head.

Bind into Weaken. He'd done it ten thousand times in a different body, in a dojo that smelled of cedar and old tatami. Trap the weapon, then strike the joint the constraint exposed. One action making the next inevitable. Thematic territory: both keywords reduced what an opponent could do next. Causal link clean. Standard uchidachi response to an overhead commitment, the kind of drill Master Jin had made him repeat until his forearms burned. The system wasn't describing a game mechanic, and he didn't know if he should be disturbed by that fact or relieved. It was describing what he already did and had always done.

Strike into Strengthen. The cut committed, weight dropping into the earth at the end of full extension, body bracing to absorb its own momentum. A grounded stance after a forward commitment. The action reinforcing itself through its own completion. Thematic territory: aggression anchored by resilience, offense creating its own foundation. He'd need to test whether the system read it that way, but the physical logic held.

Memory into anything. Activating Memory required the same action twice in sequence, which in a real fight registered as a commitment pattern. Any opponent worth fighting would anticipate repetition. He filed it under situational, which was the polite word for "only once the exchange is already decided."

But The Third Line changed the math entirely. The sequence didn't have to be consecutive. He could open with a Bind, fight through three normal exchanges of basic parries and footwork to maneuver the enemy, and drop Weaken only when the angle was perfect. The system allowed him to hold the sentence open. Normal Kendo was just the punctuation between the syllables. He just had to fight correctly and let the verse build itself in the gaps.

And the tree rewarded momentum. One Breath's opening syllable actively warped his physical stats to match the word's intent. Continuous Verse meant that if he chained sentences together without resetting, his physical action speed would escalate. The grammar dictated his physical reality. The longer he kept writing, the faster and heavier he became.

The Residual Truth passive resolved a problem he hadn't fully named yet. Weaken uptime on single targets was standard practice - automatic at this point, maintained since Oakhaven. The One Absolute Rule penalized repeating the same action for Convergence. But Residual Truth operated differently: each successive Weaken composition didn't repeat the keyword, it restated an already-established truth about the target. The imprint deepened. Resistance eroded. Every application made the next one sharper, compounding quietly across the fight's full duration.

I've been manually rebuilding a system that should have been accruing automatically.

He filed that as actionable information and moved to the capstone.

The Retrospective sat at the bottom of the tree, and it was, cleanly, the most significant thing in it.

The system logged every physical action from first contact. Not the Poet's intent—finally, thank Morpheus for that—the Poet's actual actions. Every parry that trapped a weapon: Bind expression. Every precision strike at a weak point: Weaken. Every committed forward movement: Strike. The log ran whether or not he was aware of it. The Retrospective was the ability to look at what had been recording itself and declare what it meant.

Every fight has a correct Title. I just hadn't known what it was.

Something settled below his ribcage with more weight than the word satisfied could support. He checked the label against the feeling, found it too thin.

He filed it as actionable intelligence and got up, pulled up the second tree, and started north. Then caught himself.

The quest.

He came here solely to get the Resonant Cores for the quest from the Mage's Tower. He checked his quest log.

It wasn't there. The single resonant core he looted, too, was gone from his inventory.

The quest vanished, as if it had never been given to him in the first place. That… made sense, considering that the whole history was just remade to accommodate the changes of the dynamic event.

If I go to get the quest again, will it point me towards a different place? Worth checking. Later.

The Korros road was busy, crowded, but structurally occupied. A guild party of eight worked a respawn circuit two hundred meters east. A pair of rangers ran a patient kite on a territorial bull further out, the arc worn efficient by repetition. Solo players dotted the road in both directions, some grinding, some in transit, some standing at the verge on log-out timers with the slack faces of people who'd already mentally left.

He walked through all of it without breaking stride.

---

[SKILL TREE: THE ART OF STILLNESS]

A defensive and resource tree built on a single principle: the Poet who moves least has already decided where they need to be. Maximum effort and minimum motion are identical at sufficient mastery. Every action taken is a choice. Every unnecessary action is a debt. This tree measures that debt precisely and rewards those who never accrue it.

---

Core Passive: The Still Surface

The system tracks Stillness Magnitude - a measure of absolute positional authority and territorial dominance. The moment the Poet brings their footwork to a halt within an enemy's threat range, a one-meter Anchor is established around their center of mass.

Stillness Magnitude generates continuously at a rate of 4 per second as long as the Poet remains inside this perimeter while in Active Combat Status. If the Poet's center of mass crosses the boundary (whether through voluntary evasion or involuntary displacement), the Anchor shatters, and Stillness Magnitude instantly resets to zero.

The duration the Anchor is held under pressure determines Stillness Magnitude on a scale of 0–100.

0 Magnitude: Nothing.

50 Magnitude: Minor debuffs cleanse passively at a rate of one per 15 seconds.

75 Magnitude: Minor debuffs cleanse immediately on application. Major debuffs begin cleansing at one per 30 seconds.

100 Magnitude: All minor debuffs cleanse immediately. Major debuffs cleanse at one per 10 seconds.

(System Note: Cleanse timers pause rather than reset if Magnitude drops, provided a new Anchor is established within 3.0 seconds.)

Standing still outside of an opponent's strike range to gain Stillness Magnitude does not work. The Anchor demands pressure.

SKILLS:

[The Interval]

A deliberate, enforced 1.0-second window of complete stillness declared between combat exchanges. Cannot be declared while under active attack. Requires a genuine gap the Poet has already created through positioning. The system knows the difference between a gap earned and a gap wished for.

During the 1.0s: All active debuff cleanse rates double.

Upon Successful Completion:

The Poet's next action after The Interval exits is assessed by the system at one timing grade higher than its natural result. (Timing grades upgraded by this skill cannot exceed Perfect. An action that would naturally grade as Perfect receives a flat +10% potency modifier instead of an Edge upgrade. Edge grades can only be earned organically, and don't benefit from The Interval.)

Burst restoration scaling from current Stillness Magnitude:

0–24: No recovery.

25–49: +2% Max Awen, +2% Max HP.

50–74: +4% Max Awen, +3% Max HP.

75–99: +7% Max Awen, +5% Max HP.

100: +10% Max Awen, +8% Max HP.

Failure State: Any physical action, movement, or incoming hit before 1.0s shatters The Interval. All benefits forfeit. Stillness Magnitude docked.

---

He was still reading when movement broke from a stand of pale-barked scrub trees twenty meters off the road to his left.

Two players. The angle was wrong, travelers and hunters moved toward the zone's mobs, which were east and west. These two moved toward him. Rogue leather on the left, the stance over-invested in AGI and light on everything else. Wraps on the right, foot placement too wide for a casual walk.

Second grade at best.

He closed the interface without hurrying.

The rogue committed first. Shoulder dropped too early, blade out, the lunge telegraphed with the quality of a player who'd drilled the motion against stationary dummies. Kage stepped left without urgency and let the blade cross his ribs with three-quarters of a meter to spare.

(Step left) "Weak-" (precision strike, overextended wrist) "-en."

[-40 AWN]

[Convergence +4 (Clean)]

[-142 HP]

The rogue stumbled into empty air. The monk was already committed behind him, a side kick, properly set up, genuine timing on the execution. It would have connected if Kage were standing where the rogue's lunge implied he should be. He was one step forward and half a meter left, which put him inside the kick's range, where it had no leverage.

He brought his elbow across the monk's centerline. Not hard.

"Wrong target," he said, without particular heat, and sheathed Mumyo.

At STR 24 the elbow across the centerline communicated the conversation was finished. At STR 35 it communicated it faster, with less room for the monk to decide he disagreed. The eleven points were palpable.

The rogue was invisible, but the footprints silently appearing on the dirt already marked his immediate decision. The monk stood still for a moment with the particular look of someone revising an assumption they'd been confident about, then walked north at a pace that was slightly too fast to be casual.

[Convergence: 4/100 - STATE: SHARPENED]

Four, from one Clean action against targets generating near-zero real pressure. Proportional. He pulled the Art of Stillness panel back up and kept reading.

---

[Breath Between Lines]

When the Poet takes a hit that is fully mitigated—absorbed rather than evaded—the system registers a high-economy decision: the Poet chose to hold position rather than break it.

Effect: Each accepted-and-mitigated hit generates +15 Stillness Magnitude. Immediately upon mitigating, the Poet gains a +50% Action Speed modifier for 1.0 second.

The body held. The position held. The enemy exhaled. The Poet acts in the gap. A hit absorbed deliberately, in position, already accounted for, is economy. A hit that found the Poet is a mistake. The distinction is precise.

---

[The Erosion] (Passive)

Enemies in sustained contact with the Poet accumulate a debuff the system designates Erosion - a measure of how long they have failed to land a clean hit against a Poet operating at high Stillness Magnitude.

As Erosion accumulates, it degrades the enemy's action speed.

Builds only while Stillness Magnitude is above 50. Maximum 10 stacks. Each stack reduces target action speed by 3%.

Decay: Loses one stack per second if the Poet breaks their Anchor unnecessarily or takes an unmitigated hit.

Transfers to new targets if the Poet disengages and re-engages.

The debuff is invisible to the afflicted target.

---

[The Weight of Nothing] (Capstone)

During any exchange the Poet may declare a Held Interval, a sustained version of The Interval extending across multiple exchanges. During a Held Interval the Poet takes no offensive action, casts no verse, makes no aggressive movement. They hold position, parry only what requires parrying, and let the fight move around them.

Two effects build simultaneously for every exchange maintained, both scaling from current Stillness Magnitude as a percentage multiplier. At 100 Magnitude, the full rate applies. At 50, half applies. At 0, nothing accumulates regardless of duration.

Suppressed Potential: Every exchange completed without action adds 15% potency to the Poet's next verse, uncapped. No verse needs to be pre-declared. The suppressed potential attaches to whatever verse the Poet chooses to cast when the Held Interval ends. The silence was the first line. Whatever follows inherits it.

Recovery per exchange completed:

0–24: No recovery.

25–49: +4% Max Awen, +4% Max HP.

50–74: +8% Max Awen, +6% Max HP.

75–99: +14% Max Awen, +10% Max HP.

100: +20% Max Awen, +16% Max HP.

Ending the Hold: Ends when the Poet takes an unmitigated hit, makes an offensive action, or ends it deliberately. Ending deliberately releases accumulated suppression into the next verse. An unmitigated hit releases it at half the accumulated value. No duration cap.

---

The analysis was shorter than the first.

This is just a description of what I already do.

Not approximately. The specific mechanics—manufacturing a gap through positioning rather than force, holding that gap to set the pace of the exchange, letting the opponent commit into a space that narrowed what came next—this was Kendo translated into a resource metric. Master Jin had called it sente. The principle was identical. Stillness Magnitude measured his absolute refusal to yield the ground he had claimed, which was a harder and more honest standard.

The Interval's failure clause was the load-bearing line. The gap had to be earned before he could use it. The system distinguished between a pause he'd built through correct positioning and one he'd been forced into. Using the skill on an earned gap produced a timing upgrade and resource recovery. Using it on a gap he hadn't made yet produced nothing, docked his Magnitude, and told him exactly where he'd been wrong about his position in the exchange. The mechanic didn't flatter. He appreciated that.

Breath Between Lines required a reframe. He'd spent years treating contact as a failure condition - clean evasion was the standard, and any hit was a mistake. The tree proposed a different accounting: absorbing a blocked hit while holding position cost less kinetically than the footwork required to dodge, and the gap produced afterward was the same. Fifty percent action speed for a second meant the gap the opponent assumed they'd closed could be answered faster than they expected.

Use the hit as the platform for the riposte.

He'd need to unlearn something for that. It happened occasionally.

The Erosion passive he returned to twice.

Invisible. Persistent. Building only against sustained efficient defense. Ten stacks at three percent apiece. Thirty percent total action speed reduction at maximum, with the target attributing the slowdown to anything except the correct cause: bad matchup, overcommitment, a rhythm that had stopped working without obvious reason. They'd adjust for the next encounter based on a wrong diagnosis. The adjustment would be wrong.

Invisible debuffs that punish sustained incorrectness are categorically better than visible ones that warn people to correct.

Weight of Nothing paired with the Retrospective in a way he was reasonably certain the designers had reviewed, decided was acceptable, and gone home. During a Held Interval, he made no offensive actions, cast no verses. But, if he could follow the mappings, the Physical Lexicon still ran underneath. Every parry he executed against incoming attacks generated keyword imprints - Bind from a trapping deflection, Weaken from precision angles applied to force the opponent's weakest position. The system logged it. The fight composed itself against his stillness. At any point during the hold, or immediately after ending it, he declared a Title. The Retrospective assembled a verdict built entirely from evidence the opponent had provided.

I hold the fight at arm's length, recover to full, and the system returns a sentence built from everything they did wrong.

His chest did something he identified quickly this time. Just satisfaction. he'd stopped arguing with it about that particular word.

The gate towers were close, properly close, the checkpoint arch resolving above the road, the guards visible as still figures in the tunnel shadow. He slowed to a pace the crowd at the approach could manage and a notification chimed.

[New Messages - Lily (4)]

Four. He opened the thread.

The bottom two were recent.

[Lily → Kage] ???

[Lily → Kage] HELLO

He looked up.

[Sent: 1 hour, 8 minutes ago]

[Lily → Kage] hey!! quick question and i hope you see this before tonight :pleading_emoji: do you remember the goblin mines dungeon back in oakhaven? we had an empty slot that run because our friend was supposed to come but had something come up irl last second.

[Lily → Kage] well he's free tonight!! would it be okay if he joined the raid?? he has a rare class, The Still-Water Duelist (sounds cool right?) and he's honestly really, really good. like really good. he's been one of my best friends since I started playing games and i think you'd actually like him!! please please can he come? :)

He looked at the one-hour-old message. Then the two follow-ups, sent inside the same few-second frame.

He counted the roster. Him. Zherdev. Lily, Jax, Zara, Finn. Valdrias. Vami, plus Vami's girlfriend.

Nine.

The Shifting Galleries ran ten.

Of course it does.

[Kage → Lily] Bring him

[Kage → Lily] It fills the group exactly

He sent it without commenting on the '???' and the 'HELLO,' which had communicated everything they needed to. A melee swordsman. Someone he'd like. Two separate claims offered as if they reinforced each other.

He'd see which one held up.

The checkpoint arch passed overhead. The guards acknowledged the Patron of the Songstone title with a nod that carried more weight than guards usually bothered with. He walked through into the city's outer streets and opened the last tree.

[SKILL TREE: THE JISEI - THE FINAL VERSE]

A tree built around a single truth: some things cannot be rewritten. The Jisei tree works in the space where the cost has already been paid. Where what was spent cannot be recovered. Where the poem is true because something real was given for it. The tradition calls it jisei. The death poem. Composed at the threshold. The verse that is only possible because the writer is already leaving.
