DESCRIPTION

o/ there'll be a double release today

The taunt hit like a church bell thrown down a staircase.

The Mawbound Draft-Behemoth surged toward Valdrias, circular mouth widening, half-written teeth rotating in its throat. The suction dragged suspended rain sideways. Loose splinters scraped across the crystal reef. A ribbon of black ink peeled off the dead Alpha’s corpse and vanished into the maw.

Valdrias braced behind his new glowing tower shield with the solemn commitment of a man defending an empire that existed entirely inside his own misunderstanding of game mechanics.

The behemoth slammed into him.

The shield flared. Valdrias slid six inches, boots grinding against crystal. His canvas mark burst with dry chalk-light across his fingers, and the reef beneath him hardened in a circular patch.

[-112 HP]

Valdrias grunted.

Kage’s eyes tracked the line forming above the monster.

and the freed mouth lunged upon the loudest claim, grinding shield and name alike

“Valdrias, hold. Julie, brace his right. Common marks, stabilize the crack.”

Lily, Jax, Finn, and Zara hit the reef with marked hands. Chalk spread from their palms in matte gray smears. The crystal stopped flexing beneath the party’s feet.

Julie’s ink-black geometric lines brightened. She drew two fingers through the air beside Valdrias, sketching an angled brace. Thin black architecture snapped into place. A triangular support formed under the shield’s lower edge, a clean little wedge of drafting.

The behemoth bit down again.

This time the wedge took part of the force.

[-61 HP]

“Better,” Julie said.

“Much better,” Valdrias said.

Julie looked at Lily. “Does he always talk like this?”

Lily smiled with the faint exhaustion of someone who had accepted a side quest by accident. “Recently.”

Vami moved.

He cut across the reef in a white streak, boots skimming crystal, one dagger trailing light. His armor brightened with every step. The white leather picked up the storm’s hidden glow and threw it back harder, turning his outline sharp enough to hurt the eye.

The behemoth’s scratched-out eyes followed him.

Aggro shifted in the air like a hooked chain.

Kage smelled it through the stupid high-Artistry interface. Bitter rainwater and burnt paper. Threat, attention. The sensory translation remained a questionable design choice, but it worked.

“Vami, build wide. Pull it off Valdrias on the third bite.”

“Already doing that.”

Of course he was.

Ren moved toward the left forelimb, measured steps placing him exactly outside the claw’s sweep. His curved longsword came free with clean economy. No wasted flourish. No cosmetics. The man’s whole build looked like someone had taken every bad MMO instinct, put it in a sack, and drowned it in a training hall.

Kage turned his own movement smaller.

Efficient. Ugly enough.

Ren could see a good player. Ren could see a guy abusing a strange sword and class gimmicks. That version caused fewer problems.

The behemoth raised one forelimb.

A fresh line wrote itself above the claws.

and the quarry’s freed weight cracked the reef where the small marks gathered

“Scatter from the common stack,” Kage said. “Two steps only. Keep overlap.”

Jax hauled Lily back. Zara moved left, exactly two steps, face tight with concentration. Finn nearly overstepped, caught himself, and slapped his marked palm down again. His hawk screamed from above.

The claw smashed into the reef between their chalk zones. Crystal burst upward in jagged shards.

No one fell.

Good party. Strange sentence to apply to this collection of personality disorders, but accurate.

Zara threw both hands forward. Frost threaded the behemoth’s striking limb, crawling into the seams between parchment plates.

[Target Slowed! Movement Speed -18%.]

Finn’s arrow followed, punching into a dark line under the joint.

[-96 HP]

Ren arrived on the same wound an instant later.

His sword cut through the frozen seam.

[Critical Hit! -312 HP]

The behemoth roared, a wet sound full of torn pages.

Kage watched the limb recoil. A narrow opening showed where the parchment-muscle folded over glassy tendon.

Mumyo pulsed in his hand.

Fine. Small test.

He stepped in.

The beast’s secondary claw swept low, a sloppy backhand aimed at his knees. Kage lowered his center of gravity and met the attack with Mumyo’s flat near the inner hook of the claw.

Kage still had an arm, a shoulder, a spine, and an avatar with perfectly normal complaints about sudden torque. He guided the blade into contact, then let the behemoth’s force slide along the angle.

The parry landed at the last useful moment.

The word appeared inside the motion.

[Bind]

He felt it more than saw it. A syllable locking under his ribs. Mumyo’s edge trapped the claw against a reef shard, and Kage’s body grew heavy for half a breath, as if the system had poured stone into his stance.

[Physical Lexicon recognized: Bind.]

[Opening Syllable: Bind.]

[Convergence +7.]

The claw jerked. Kage held.

His shoulder burned. The blade weighed nothing. His bones carried the argument.

He rotated around the trapped limb and cut into the tendon Finn had marked.

[Weaken]

The second keyword tried to slip. It wanted a cleaner precision line, a deeper understanding, a better sentence written in meat and steel. Kage adjusted his wrist by a fraction and let Mumyo bite the softest fold.

[Physical Verse Complete: Bind / Weaken.]

[Target Weakened! Left Forelimb Stability -12%.]

[-141 HP]

[AWN: 1300/1420]

[Convergence +2.]

Kage disengaged before the monster crushed the reef around him.

A strange satisfaction opened in his chest.

It felt cleaner than useful. Like a cut placed exactly through bamboo. Like an old door opening in a house he had sworn off entering.

Great. The sword-poetry nonsense is fun.

He hated that.

He loved that.

Ren’s gaze caught the exchange.

Kage felt it from ten feet away, the way one fencer felt another’s attention on distance and timing. Ren had seen the bind. Maybe the foot placement. Maybe the adjustment.

Acceptable?

Ren’s eyes narrowed.

Unlucky.

The behemoth reared back. Its mouth opened again, wider this time. The inside of it rotated with dense black text.

A line spread across the air, heavier than the previous attacks.

and so the beast swallowed the chalk-marked anchors, and the reef forgot the weight it carried

Kage’s stomach tightened.

That one mattered.

If it hit the common marks, the floor went. The reef existed because Julie had revealed it and Kage had legitimized it, but the Canvas marks kept the unstable parts from turning back into bad ideas. Letting the behemoth eat those marks sounded like an excellent way to convert ten players into falling damage statistics.

His author’s script stirred around his forearm.

The remaining letters lifted from his skin, eager.

Current danger: floor deletion. Edit cost: unknown, probably adds or terrain shift. Resource: low. Consequence: survivable if smaller than gravity.

Kage raised his marked hand.

Zara saw him. “You’re editing again?”

“Small one.”

“Your previous edit spawned this thing.”

“Wish me luck, then.”

He touched the line with two fingers.

The black letters around his arm lashed upward. Fewer than before. Thinner stream. They struck the phrase chalk-marked anchors and wrapped around it like ink-soaked wire.

Kage forced the change with intent.

“Broken mast.”

The phrase crossed itself out.

For a second, the dungeon resisted. The stage direction bowed under pressure. The behemoth’s mouth trembled between targets, drawn toward the marked players, then toward the splintered ship-rib lying half-buried near the reef’s edge.

The line rewrote.

and so the beast swallowed the broken mast, and the reef forgot the weight it carried

Kage clicked his tongue.

“Still bad.”

“Common marks, reinforce floor. Now.”

The behemoth lunged sideways and devoured the broken mast.

Wood, canvas, and old nails vanished into the circular mouth. Its throat churned. The reef shuddered, and the section under the mast dissolved into gray sketch-lines.

Lily and Jax slammed their hands down. Finn copied them, face pale. Zara dropped to one knee and added her mark with a grimace. The floor around them turned chalk-white and held.

The section under the mast fell away.

A hole opened in the reef, revealing dark water far below.

Notifications appeared.

[Author’s Ink: 24%]

[Syllable Debt accrued: +6.]

[Total Syllable Debt: 24.]

[Compensatory Revision Applied: The Swallowed Mast Remembers Its Crew.]

The behemoth gagged.

Zherdev pointed. “Boss is vomiting lore!”

“Adds,” Zara said. “That word is adds.”

The monster’s mouth opened and spat four humanoid things onto the reef. They were made from wet wood, sailcloth, and ink-black joints. Their heads carried rough charcoal faces, each one drawn over a previous face until every expression looked exhausted.

Vami laughed.

Julie said, “Honey.”

“I know, I know.”

His Lux flared hard.

Every deckhand turned toward him. The behemoth turned too. Vami’s white armor shone with a magnesium glare, every seam in the leather channeling light into brighter lines. The dungeon’s shadows crawled away from him.

“Zara, stop them,” Kage said.

“Already casting.”

Frost snapped across the reef in a crescent. The deckhands’ feet locked to the crystal.

[Target Rooted! Duration: 3.0 seconds.]

Jax charged the nearest add, sword raised. “Finally, something my size.”

The deckhand swung a sailcloth arm. Jax blocked, absorbed the hit, and chopped into its shoulder.

[-184 HP]

Zherdev barreled in from the opposite side with his giant sword lifted too high. Sparks flew off the sheath on his back. His glowing pauldrons clipped a suspended raindrop, which chimed like glass.

“BEHOLD THE GREATNESS OF ZHERDEV THE UNSTOPPABLE.”

“Angle down,” Kage said.

“I know angles.”

“You got stuck on a fruit cart an hour ago.”

“I know recent angles less.”

Zherdev lowered the greatsword just enough. The blade smashed into a rooted deckhand and drove it sideways into Jax’s target.

[Critical Hit! -721 HP]

The behemoth lunged at Vami.

Vami let it come.

His glow peaked. The white armor turned almost painful. The behemoth’s maw snapped down where he stood.

Vami vanished in a flash.

The Purge detonated with a hard white burst. Kage’s vision washed clean for an instant, the whole reef reduced to black outlines and afterimages. The deckhands staggered. The behemoth’s head jerked aside.

[-544 HP]

[-588 HP]

[-601 HP]

[-820 HP]

The larger number belonged to the behemoth. Its HP bar dipped in a satisfying chunk.

[Mawbound Draft-Behemoth - Lvl 28]

HP: 32214/38000

Vami reappeared behind the monster, optical shimmer falling off his shoulders.

“Clean,” he called.

“Don’t celebrate yet,” Julie said.

Kage moved again.

He wanted another physical test before the fight became a loot delivery service. The behemoth had strong telegraphs, slow limbs, and a raid chewing through its sides. A practice dummy with a dental issue.

He entered from the right, away from Ren’s clean line. The monster’s lower jaw dragged across the reef, leaving wet ink where it scraped. A small exposed groove opened behind a bone plate.

Kage considered [Strike] into [Weaken].

Logical causality worked. A committed attack created access to a weak point. Thematic compatibility felt decent. Violence revealing frailty. Ugly sentence, solid mechanics.

He lunged.

Mumyo traveled in a straight vector, no arc, no readable weight. The blade struck the edge of the bone plate.

[Strike]

The opening syllable pushed through his arm. Mumyo’s edge sharpened in the system’s understanding, armor penetration multiplying against the contact.

[Physical Lexicon recognized: Strike.]

[Opening Syllable: Strike.]

[-128 HP]

He shifted to the groove behind the plate and cut.

Too late.

The behemoth’s head twitched, and the groove vanished under folding hide. Mumyo scored surface parchment instead of the tendon beneath.

The second word never caught.

[Physical Verse failed: Coherence broken.]

[AWN: 1240/1420]

Kage withdrew, mouth tightening.

Harder than it looks. Good.

The system demanded the body understand the word. The first action created a path, but the second needed truth. A sloppy follow-up turned poetry into expensive stabbing. Classic artisan class behavior. Charge premium, punish ignorance, call it beauty.

The behemoth swept its tail. The tail looked like an afterthought, a thick line of gray mass ending in an inkbrush tuft. It cut through suspended rain and aimed for the backline.

“Tail, low right.”

Ren intercepted first.

His stance dropped. His sword met the tail at a shallow angle and redirected enough force for Jax to shoulder-check the remaining swing away from Lily.

[-38 HP]

Jax grunted. “That all you got?”

The behemoth answered by spitting a jet of black solvent at him.

Julie’s ink mark flashed.

She drew a rectangle in the air.

A draft-barricade snapped into place, thin and exact. The solvent splashed across it, eating through the outlined wall in smoking holes.

“Jax,” Julie said sweetly, “maybe stop asking the raid boss for feedback.”

“Fair.”

Finn’s hawk dove through the rain, screeching over the behemoth’s injured limb. Finn fired into the same line as the bird’s pass.

[Marked Weak Point exposed.]

Zara’s frost speared the exposed seam.

Ren cut.

Vami hit from behind, Lux already building again, each strike increasing the glare around him.

The HP dropped fast.

[Mawbound Draft-Behemoth - Lvl 28]

HP: 18402/38000

Kage stepped into the rhythm again, more careful.

The behemoth clawed at him. He used a short sidestep, let the claw pass, and cut into the overextended wrist joint.

[Weaken]

A one-word physical action caught for a breath.

[Physical Lexicon recognized: Weaken.]

[Target Weakened! Attack Power -4%. Duration: 8 seconds.]

[-119 HP]

[AWN: 1180/1420]

[Convergence +2.]

Small. Reliable. Low commitment.

So single keywords are easier. Combinations need the body to speak grammar.

The behemoth lowered its maw toward Valdrias again. Valdrias had recovered most of the earlier damage under Lily’s steady healing and Julie’s timed tethers. Golden light from Lily’s priest spell braided with Julie’s class augmentation.

[Valdrias healed +180 HP.]

[Valdrias healed +96 HP.]

Valdrias raised his shield. “I remain unbroken.”

Kage blinked.

Jax looked at him. “Did you teach him that one?”

“No.”

“Sounds like you.”

“It doesn't.”

The behemoth bit. Valdrias blocked. The weakened jaw scraped across his shield instead of crushing it.

[-73 HP]

Vami reached full brightness again.

This time he stayed there.

The behemoth’s attention locked onto him so violently that even Kage’s Synesthesia flinched. Burnt paper, bitter rain, and a pressure behind the teeth. Vami stood at the center of it, grinning like a man who had discovered a legal way to juggle knives in a hospital.

“Vami,” Kage said. “Purge after the slam.”

“Going to ride cap for three more seconds.”

“Why?”

“Bigger payoff.”

Julie sighed. “Because he likes making my job weird.”

The behemoth slammed both forelimbs down toward Vami.

Kage saw the line a beat before impact.

and the freed quarry crushed the brightest trespasser beneath both rewritten hands

“Now.”

Vami waited one more fraction.

A stupid fraction. A beautiful fraction. The kind of timing that turned healers into widows and DPS logs into religious texts.

Then he Purged.

The flash burst under both claws. The behemoth hit empty crystal. Light detonated upward through its limbs.

[Critical Hit! -1460 HP]

Both forelimbs cracked.

Ren and Jax hit the left. Zara froze the right. Finn called, “Jaw hinge, open line!”

Kage went in.

This time he forgot to make it ugly.

Only for one exchange.

He entered on the half-beat created by Vami’s detonation, Mumyo low, shoulders quiet. The behemoth’s jaw hung open from the backlash. Kage stepped to the outside line, cut the hinge with [Strike], let the blade rebound weightless, and turned the same motion into a second cut through the softened fold.

[Strike]

[Weaken]

[Physical Verse Complete: Strike / Weaken.]

[Critical Hit! -286 HP]

[Target Weakened! Jaw Integrity -15%.]

[AWN: 1060/1420]

[Convergence +7.]

Mumyo’s shadow trailed behind the blade.

[Echoes of Devotion (Stack 5/5)]

The phantom detached on the next basic cut, a dark afterimage biting an instant after steel.

[-149 HP]

[Ethereal Damage -74 HP]

The behemoth’s jaw split along the rewritten seam.

Ren had seen it.

Kage felt that too.

Add it to the list of future problems.

Vami appeared above the broken jaw, one dagger reversed, white armor dimming after the purge.

“Mine.”

He drove both daggers into the exposed throat and ripped down.

[-312 HP]

Zara’s ice lance struck the open wound.

[-440 HP]

Finn’s arrow followed.

[Critical Hit! -304 HP]

Valdrias shield-bashed the cracked jaw.

[-76 HP]

The behemoth’s HP collapsed.

[Mawbound Draft-Behemoth - Lvl 28]

HP: 0/38000

The mini-boss sagged.

Its body lost color first. Pigment drained from the hide in slow streams, pooling across the reef before sinking into the crystal. The charcoal outline held for three seconds longer, trembling, then peeled apart into loose sketch strokes. Its bone plates dropped one by one, each covered in scratched-out words.

One plate landed near Kage’s boot.

Most of the text had been crossed through so many times that the words became a black field. A single phrase remained visible along the edge.

keep hunger below until coil is final

Kage stared at it.

The Glasscoil had pinned the behemoth. The behemoth had guarded the lower route, or blocked it, or represented a draft note the dungeon never cleaned up. Removing the coil released the mouth. Killing the mouth opened the reef.

Environmental storytelling through bad decisions.

Efficient, in a hostile way.

The hidden sea below the reef stopped churning. The hole where the mast had dissolved widened into a smooth, circular opening. Far beneath it, a tilted corridor of frames descended through dark water that moved without wetting anything. Gilded edges glimmered in the distance.

The rare marks reacted first.

Vami’s wet paint mark slid along his wrist, droplets hanging from his knuckles and stretching downward. Ren’s pigment did the same in deep blue and amber. Zherdev’s mark glowed so brightly it competed with his cape, which was a sentence no sane visual designer should ever allow.

All three pointed through the hole.

Down.

The loot panel opened.

[Loot Acquired]

[Ink: Abyssal Draft-Sepia] x1

[Mawbound Anchor Vambraces] x1

[Glass-Reef Spellthread] x1

[Draft-Behemoth Jawplate] x4

[Currency: 3 Gold, 80 Silver]

[You have gained 4800 EXP.]

[Experience: 13732/62500]

Kage claimed the ink before Zherdev could ask whether it glowed.

A smaller description unfolded.

[Ink: Abyssal Draft-Sepia]

Quality: Rare

Type: Artisan Reagent / Quill Ammunition

Effect:

[Submerged Syntax]: Increases the overall potency of Written Verses by 35%. Written Verses interacting with water, shadow, memory, or submerged structures gain an additional minor stability bonus.

Description: Ink rendered from a creature that waited beneath an unfinished sea. It clings to the page like a secret trying to remain drowned.

“Mine,” Kage said.

Zara gave him a look. “Shocking.”

“You want the poetry ink?”

“I want the game to stop rewarding you so much.”

“Same.”

He tossed the vambraces’ panel to Valdrias.

[Mawbound Anchor Vambraces]

Quality: Rare

Type: Heavy Arm Armor

Armor: +80

Stamina: +20

Strength: +20

Passive Effect:

[Anchored Guard] While actively blocking with a shield, resistance to forced movement is increased by 15%.

Requirement: Level 25, 30 STR, 40 STAM

Valdrias stared at the panel like it contained a royal decree.

Jax waved a hand. “Take them. If you get pushed off the platform, I have to tank, and nobody wants that.”

Kage sent the [Glass-Reef Spellthread] to Zara. It boosted frost damage and spell control against crystalline targets, and Zara accepted with the expression of someone receiving a birthday gift from an enemy nation.

The jawplates went into shared materials. Zherdev offered to buy all four “for crafting,” and the party ignored him with practiced speed.

For thirty seconds, the raid breathed.

Marks dimmed. Healing topped people off. Julie checked Valdrias’s positioning out of habit, then adjusted Lily’s stance with a gentle touch to the shoulder and a quiet note about keeping exit lines open. Lily listened, nodding. Finn fed his hawk a strip of something from his pouch with hands that had mostly stopped shaking.

Mostly.

Kage watched his own arm.

Author’s Ink crept back one character at a time. The orbit remained thin. Twenty-four percent after the edit, a little more now. Slow enough that spamming edits would murder the party through consequences before it saved them.

Annoyingly good system design.

Jax looked at Vami, who was flexing his fingers as the last light drained from his armor.

“Okay, I have to ask. Is that armor custom-made for your class? Because it keeps doing weird sun crimes.”

Vami brightened, emotionally this time. A dangerous sign.

“No. Class passive. Radiant Cutthroat overlays a Lux lattice onto whatever armor I wear. Battery channels, reflectivity, kinetic charge capture, heat bleed, all that. The white is forced by the class.”

Kage looked over the armor again. The asymmetrical white leather had seemed like vanity at first glance. Now he could see the logic. Seams positioned for movement. Reinforced stress points around hips and shoulders. Surfaces angled to catch motion and light. A class engine wearing the skin of an obnoxious fashion statement.

“So base gear still matters,” Kage said.

“Completely. Bad armor means bad capacity, bad transfer, bad defensive stats. The passive modifies properties. It doesn’t turn garbage into endgame.” Vami tapped his chest. “Higher rarity gives better Lux ceiling and cleaner discharge. Materials matter too. Reflective, flexible, heat-tolerant, lightweight. Dungeon gear usually beats city fashion.”

Zara stared at him. “Your class is absurd.”

“Thank you.”

“That wasn’t praise.”

“I optimized the interpretation.”

Finn raised a hand halfway. “So you’re a rogue… who wants aggro?”

Vami grinned. “I want disruption. Aggro is the receipt. The more enemies focus me, the more Lux value I can convert. My burst scales with stored Lux and accumulated threat pressure. My stealth tools scale with Lux too. Higher meter, stronger cuts, better reposition, larger Purge.”

Jax frowned. “So why purge at all? Stay bright and stab harder.”

“Sometimes, yes.” Vami rolled one dagger over his knuckles. “At full Lux, my rogue kit hits like crazy. I can ride cap and keep the multipliers. The problem is every mob in the room decides my continued existence is offensive. Purge resets the meter, drops aggro, flashbangs everything nearby, and gives me optical stealth.”

Julie added, “Translation: he plays chicken with death, then calls it a rotation.”

“It is a rotation.”

Zara crouched near the hole and studied the descending frames below. “So. What are we even supposed to do in this dungeon?”

Zherdev lifted one finger. “Traditionally, we locate the biggest hostile art snob and reduce him to loot.”

“That is the worst correct answer I’ve heard today,” Zara said.

Jax rolled his shoulders. “Usually it’s find the boss and kill him, right?”

“Usually,” Kage said.

Everyone looked at the three rare marks.

Wet pigment flowed along Vami’s wrist toward the opening. Ren’s mark pointed with calmer pressure, a compass made of paint. Zherdev’s mark practically screamed downward in crimson, cobalt, and gold.

Below the reef, the hidden corridor waited.

Frames descended through the dark water like steps into a drowned museum. Far down, a pale light flickered behind a massive gilded rectangle, then vanished as if something had walked in front of it.

Kage sheathed Mumyo.

The blade pulsed once against his palm before settling.

“Formation,” Kage said. “Canvas marks first and staggered. Rare marks guide. Julie draws if the route breaks. Nobody edits anything unless the alternative is worse.”

Zara looked at his arm. “That last part aimed at you?”

“Yes.”

Vami stepped to the edge, grinning down into the dark. “Actual boss is lower.”

Ren’s hand rested on his sword hilt. His gaze stayed on the corridor, but his attention brushed Kage again, sharp and questioning.

Kage ignored it for now.

The rare marks pointed straight down. Ren's hand stayed on his sword, and his attention stayed on Kage.
