Chapter 131: Public Relations Disaster

DESCRIPTION

Klaid woke up to orange light on his ceiling and the immediate, bone-deep conviction that he had ruined something.

The apartment was too warm. His blanket had twisted around one leg during sleep, trapping him in a fabric-based crowd control effect. His mouth tasted like cheap instant coffee. Somewhere outside, a truck backed up with a steady beep that drilled through the wall and directly into his skull.

He reached for his phone.

His eyes found the time first.

6:08 PM.

Klaid sat up so fast the blanket tried to execute him. His heel caught in the fabric, his knee hit the side of the bed, and the entire mattress shrieked against the floorboards.

“Shit.”

Appointment.

His chest tightened. Thursday. Mom.

He stabbed the phone screen with his thumb, opened the calendar, and stared at the date.

Wednesday.

For three full seconds, Klaid did nothing except breathe through his nose while his heartbeat gradually stopped trying to leave his body through his throat.

Wednesday.

He had lost a day, not the day.

Very normal reaction to a calendar.

He lowered the phone, leaned forward, and pressed the heel of his palm into one eye until little stars crawled across the dark. His hands still had that post-dive tremor, the subtle buzzing in the tendons after too many hours in full immersion. His real body always acted offended when he spent an entire night letting a game puppet his nervous system.

The thought finished, and the second problem arrived.

Lyra.

Klaid froze.

“Fuck.”

He had known he had something today. There had been a slot in his head labeled important Korros errand, do not ignore, and then yesterday had taken that label, thrown it into a dungeon, stabbed it with a paintbrush, and made it fight a level forty page demon for legal custody of his class.

House Vane Commission. Lyra final check. Greywater Ward. Today.

Yesterday morning, he had woken up before Lady Vane’s commission. That felt like three weeks ago and also like fifteen minutes ago, which was one of the more annoying things about high-intensity gaming. The brain filed major events in emotional weight, and apparently “noble matriarch hires you to weaponize poetry for an art debut” and “accidentally becomes landlord of a raid” occupied the same shelf.

After Lady Vane, he had handled Korros business. Then the Songstone Ruins had turned into the Songstone Amphitheater because the System had looked at his day planner and chosen violence. From there, he had gone directly into the Shifting Galleries raid, which had ended sometime past the hour where human beings with any respect for their organs went to sleep.

He had logged out, collapsed, and slept until dinner.

Now he had an NPC artist to visit, a commission deadline, an entire city of art to navigate, and tomorrow he had to visit his mother.

Elara would kill him if he missed it. That part was simple. His sister had the kind of exhausted patience that could survive hospital bureaucracy, late rent, insurance forms, doctors who spoke in paragraphs, and Klaid’s emotional constipation. Missing the hospital visit would push her past human limits and into a rare-class execution state.

But it wasn’t only Elara.

He stared at his phone, thumb resting over her last message.

Elara: Tomorrow. 11:30. Please don’t forget.

Below it, from two hours ago:

Elara: Are you asleep?

He typed.

Klaid: Just woke up. I’ll be there tomorrow.

He looked at it. Too short. Too cold. Accurate, though. Every attempt to add warmth looked like he had downloaded a “How to Text Your Family” guide from a forum run by divorced accountants.

He added one word.

Klaid: Just woke up. I’ll be there tomorrow. Promise.

That made his stomach twist for a reason he refused to inspect. He sent it before he could delete it.

The read receipt did not appear immediately. Good. Maybe Elara was eating, or at the hospital, or living one of the thousand tiny hours he had outsourced to her while he fought monsters for money.

Tomorrow he would go for Mom.

For Elara.

For himself, too.

Klaid tossed the phone onto the bed and stood.

Now that he had money, he could buy actual food. Fresh vegetables. Meat that came from a source more trustworthy than “discount sticker at 11 PM.” Maybe fruit. Rich people fruit, like berries that cost as much as an uncommon potion.

Instead, he microwaved the rice, fried two eggs, and ate standing over the counter because sudden financial stability had not installed a dining table.

The rice clumped. The eggs stuck to the pan and tore into yellow-white scraps. He added pickled radish and miso straight from the jar with a spoon, creating a meal that would make a nutritionist quietly close the tab.

Fuel.

He had a problem now. If he woke up at six in the evening, his sleep schedule had become a feral raccoon. Nothing new, really, but tomorrow’s hospital visit was late morning. That gave him two routes.

Route one: force himself to sleep early tonight despite having just slept for most of the day. Unlikely. He could not reliably fall asleep when told, unless absolutely tired. His brain treated bedtime like a negotiation with terrorists.

Route two: power through another long session, handle Lyra, handle the Shifting Galleries management, spend time investigating his rewards, basically - stay awake until the hospital visit.

He already knew which route he would pick.

He cleaned the pan because his mother’s voice lived somewhere in his spine and still punished him for leaving dishes in the sink. Then he sat at the desk, woke the monitors, and opened the Crown of Destiny forums.

The front page loaded.

Klaid stared.

The forum had become a bonfire, and someone had thrown his name in as kindling.

He did not even need to scroll.

The top threads sat stacked together, each title wearing the same disaster in a different hat.

Lower down, the fire continued in smaller bursts.

Anyone Else Get New Quests At Songstone?

Who Is Vami And Why Is He A Flashbang With Knives?

The Poet And The Dagger, Historical Reference Thread

[MEGATHREAD] World First Legacy Clear: The Shifting Galleries

KORROS MAP UPDATED OVERNIGHT? ROADS WHERE GRASS USED TO BE

Klaid placed both hands flat on the desk.

For a moment, the apartment went very still around him. The monitor fans hummed. The old building pipes clicked somewhere in the wall. Outside, the truck finally stopped beeping, probably because it had succeeded in reversing into the next postal code.

Okay.

He clicked the top thread carefully.

The video player filled the screen. The thumbnail showed the restored Songstone Amphitheater, all clean limestone tiers and color, captured at the exact moment roads were writing themselves into the grass. A cluster of players stood in the foreground. One of them wore blinding white armor and looked like a rich idiot had married a solar flare.

Vami.

Near him stood Kage. Charcoal longcoat. Burgundy beret. Mumyo at his side, black blade eating light from the thumbnail even through video compression.

Klaid closed his eyes for one second.

Yep. That’s my problem.

He did not play the video. He had lived it. He remembered enough. The comments were the dangerous part.

He scrolled.

muralGoblin: This is not edited. Mods can verify metadata.

SpearMeDaddy: bro walked into an old amphitheater and installed DLC

ArchivalGremlin: The system message said “Historical Thread Diverged.” That wording is insane. This is actually a narrative rewrite.

BigCritEnergy: that gray guy is 100% an NPC. No level. No guild. No normal class effects. He stands too clean. Players fidget like goblins on caffeine.

NeedMoreRAM: counterpoint: NPCs don’t pause to check menus every five seconds while looking dead inside

Klaid’s mouth twitched despite himself.

Fair.

VamiFanClub: WHITE ARMOR GUY IS VAMI. Confirmed player. Dude is cracked. <3 <3 <3 GO VAMI

StabEconomy: Vami being involved makes this more confusing. If one confirmed player is there, gray poet guy could be a player too.

BigCritEnergy: or Vami got recruited by a named NPC for a hidden quest, genius

GodGamerDad: My daughter says the gray one looks sad and should eat soup.

Klaid sat back half an inch.

Soup would have been better than rice paste and egg shrapnel. The child had strong fundamentals.

He kept scrolling.

TheoryMage: The restored area is accessible now. I walked there this morning. The map updated when I got close. NPCs are acting like the amphitheater has always been active. There’s a ticket office.

QuestRat99: I got a commission to deliver sheet music to Songstone. Reward was trash but the NPC mentioned “the two who broke the Crown’s silence.” New lore chain?

SingerofSongs: Bards, go there. I got a performance trial and a temporary buff called [Audience Memory]. My lute finally matters. I cried in front of a violin NPC. 10/10.

Irritated: Any tank quests there?

BardicInspiration: You can carry stage equipment.

Irritated: uninstalling

HistoriCat: IMPORTANT: The NPC docent refuses to give names for the defenders. Says accounts disagree. Calls them “a Poet and a Dagger.” That matches the world history text in the video. The system is preserving anonymity inside lore. That feels intentional.

Klaid stopped.

A Poet and a Dagger.

The system had hidden their names in the event text. His public ladder identity remained hidden. His level stayed hidden. The world itself treated him as a disputed figure.

Good.

Then he looked back at the video thumbnail, where his outfit, face, weapon, posture, and general aura of “underfed final boss intern” were visible to every person with an internet connection.

Less good.

He opened the deep dive thread in a new tab.

Deep Dive Into “Kage”: NPC, Player, Dev Plant, or Morpheus Having a Laugh?

The first post was long. Organized. Too organized. It had headings, timestamps, screenshots, slow-motion clips, and a chart.

Klaid immediately disliked the author.

PatchnoteProphet:

Since everyone is arguing in circles, I pulled together verified info about the gray-coated figure people are calling “Kage.” This name comes from Vami saying it twice in the Songstone video, timestamped below.

Known facts:

Nickname “Kage”.

No visible level.

Class "Poet".

Weapon appears unique or legendary. It behaves like it has no weight.

Uses different magic school spells during the event.

Vami treats him as a party leader or at least as someone worth listening to.

Movement style resembles real-world sword training. Several users identified heavy kendo influence.

Main theories:

A. Hidden player with unique/legendary class.

B. Named NPC attached to Songstone.

C. Yggdrasil employee/dev avatar.

D. Morpheus-controlled dynamic entity.

E. Viral marketing plant.

Klaid rubbed his forehead.

Frames: If he’s a player, how did he hide level? I hit level 22 and my level still shows.

SilentStepRonin: There’s a prompt at global ranking threshold to hide identity. Someone in my guild got it at rank 999. If you say no to broadcast, your level hides. So player theory is possible.

Klaid’s hand paused on the mouse.

Great.

EconPriest: If he’s in global top 1000 and no one knows him, he’s either solo abusing hidden mechanics or part of a private whale guild.

WhaleWatcher: His gear looks expensive but not whale flashy. More “NPC undertaker” than “credit card paladin.”

Lizzler: “NPC undertaker” is so real. He looks like he bills you for the funeral before killing you.

Klaid looked down at his plain T-shirt, then at the screen.

Jin: The sword movement is old school. Not modern sport. The way he sets his feet looks like classical kendo or kenjutsu.

Klaid’s jaw tightened.

He scrolled faster.

VamiFanClub: Stop calling Vami an NPC, by the way. He's one of the best rogues in gaming across several titles. Guy has been a psycho min-maxer for years. If Vami is following Kage, Kage is either paying him, beating him in damage, or both.

LuxTax: “Vami is a psycho min-maxer” is redundant. That man sees a 3% survival rate and calls it casual content.

HealerUnionRep: Vami’s party history is why I keep my distance from leather players.

Jumpetto: The important part is “Historical Thread Diverged.” Songstone changed history retroactively. NPCs now have memories of the place existing. That means they interacted with Morpheus at narrative layer. We need to stop thinking in normal quest terms.

Klaid leaned back.

That comment had too much sense in it. Always a dangerous sign online.

He continued.

Halfway down the second page, a comment sat greyed out.

[This comment is hidden because the account has been flagged for spreading misinformation.]

The username beside it was familiar.

BeefSupreme

Klaid clicked Reveal.

The comment expanded in all caps, naturally.

BeefSupreme:

KAGE IS A PLAYER YOU ABSOLUTE MOSAIC-BRAINED CLOWNS.

HE IS THE POET.

THE POET.

I HAVE BEEN POSTING ABOUT THIS FOR ALMOST TWO DAYS AND THE MODS KEEP FLAGGING ME BECAUSE APPARENTLY WHEN A TANK MAIN TRIES TO WARN SOCIETY, SOCIETY LAUGHS.

THAT BLACK SWORD? YEAH. THAT’S THE FRAME-SKIPPING WAR CRIME SWORD. THE ONE I TOLD YOU ABOUT.

MAGIC? YEAH. THAT’S THE “SAY ONE WORD AND YOUR LEGS FILE FOR DIVORCE” THING I TOLD YOU ABOUT.

GRAVITY? DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON GRAVITY.

EVERYONE WHO REPLIED “SOURCE: TRUST ME BRO” CAN APOLOGIZE IN WRITING. DOUBLE-SPACED. FONT SIZE 12. I WILL ACCEPT GOLD, POTIONS, GEAR, RAID INVITES AND CRIMSON-LEGION OFFICER INVITE.

MODS, STOP HIDING ME. I AM NOT CRAZY. I AM EARLY.

Klaid stared at the comment.

He slowly covered his mouth with one hand. It had some sympathy in it, buried somewhere deep, under layers of secondhand embarrassment and the lingering memory of BeefSupreme being turned into road paste by orbital descent.

The replies had done what replies did.

TornadoBro: bro is fighting for his life in every thread

Poeti: I’m a Poet. My current combat rotation is “run away” into “ask the mob nicely to appreciate verse.” I believe Beef has discovered a different game.

ShieldWallSteve: As a tank main, I formally revoke Beef’s speaking privileges.

rOEn: “I am not crazy. I am early.” putting this on my guild banner

ArcherActual: WAIT. This is the same guy from the nerf poet thread? The sad noodle arrow guy??

BeefSupreme: IT WAS NOT SAD. IT WAS TACTICALLY DEBILITATED.

Moderator_Quill: User BeefSupreme has been temporarily muted for repeated unsupported claims and disruptive formatting.

Klaid exhaled through his nose.

“Poor bastard.”

He meant it this time. Mostly.

BeefSupreme had become a prophet in a sandwich board, screaming on a street corner while the meteor was already visible behind him. The worst part was that he was right. Kage was a player. Kage was the Poet. The sword did skip frames, sort of. The legs did file for divorce, depending on the strength of [Bind]. Gravity had absolutely participated in PvP.

The internet had simply chosen comedy, because it was the internet.

Klaid opened the Green Path POV thread next. The first post belonged to a player who had been at the Songstone Ruins during the event and had apparently uploaded clips from every angle possible.

The comments were less theory and more field report.

GreenBeanActual: Update 1: Songstone has a daily performance schedule. NPCs reference plays that never existed yesterday.

StageLeft: I got hired to move props. Reward: 18 silver, 400 EXP, +1 Fame. Was called “adequately quiet” by a stage manager. Best review of my life.

BardicInspiration: There is a hidden Bard trial under the third rehearsal hall. Requires 35 ART. I only had 31 and the NPC told me my soul was “promising but damp.” Logging off to think about my life.

Mappy: Vista Guild map updated after I approached. The road network is real. Caravans use it. This is freaky.

MinstrelMain: Local dialogue says the Amphitheater “withstood the Edict.” Anyone know what Edict?

Lumos: Royal Edict of Silence. New lore node. Tied to King Valerius, apparently?

Klaid stopped scrolling.

Valerius.

Of course. Because the world had decided one mythic questline was too healthy and had begun sprinkling crumbs into other people’s content.

Great. The public gets side quests from my quest.

He opened another tab for the Songstone active hub thread, then regretted it immediately when the first embedded image showed a player standing in front of the restored gatehouse giving two thumbs up beside an NPC docent.

QuestRat99: If you ask about “the Poet and the Dagger,” the docent gives different dialogue depending on your class. Warrior got “discipline without obedience.” Bard got “voice without permission.” Rogue got “a knife cutting a law.” My friend is a Cook and got “please stop asking metaphysical questions near the pastry table.”

A reply sat below.

PanLord: Cooking remains the strongest class.

Klaid approved of that one.

Then he saw the username.

Atonement

The comment had no avatar. Default grey icon. Low post count. Account created two days ago.

Atonement: funny to see normies finally discover Kage. you think this is crazy? lmao.

Klaid read it once.

The room seemed to narrow around the screen.

He did not recognize the name.

That meant very little. He had killed enough idiots, stolen enough world-firsts, robbed enough systems, flipped enough items on the market. Most players used names designed by sleep-deprived raccoons with access to edgy fonts. Atonement could be a PK survivor. Could be anyone, really. Still.

The comment had a tone. Familiarity without surprise. The confidence of someone who had already filed Kage under known problem.

He clicked the profile.

Private.

Of course.

Klaid stared at the grey icon until it blurred slightly.

Put a pin in that.

He opened the Glasscoil thread.

The title was stupid enough that he wanted it to be harmless.

It was not harmless.

World Boss “Glasscoil” Just Spawned On My Ass???

The post opened with a screenshot of a grassy slope outside Korros. Three dead players lay in various undignified angles near a patch of shattered crystalline grass. In the center of the image, half-cloaked by motion blur, a long serpentine creature made of sea-glass plates and stormlight twisted through the air.

Klaid knew that shape.

He had seen it moving through the clouds in the Shifting Galleries. He had edited it out.

MushroomDebt:

We were gathering Duskroots south-east of Korros. Normal level 18 area. No event warning. Sky opens like a painting tearing, giant glass snake drops out, deletes our Ranger, screams in cursive, then flies off.

Tag appeared for maybe one second: [Glasscoil Caesura - Lvl ??]

Anyone else see this??? Is Korros just haunted now?

The replies had multiplied fast.

HerbGoblin: SAW IT TOO. It passed over Pigment Row then vanished into a wall mural. Guards freaked out.

FrameWatcher: I got a system warning: [Rejected Draft proximity detected.] Then my screen shook and a glass feather cut my HP and I died. gg

SouthGateSimp: It killed a merchant cart. NPCs are actually repairing the road. This wasn’t normal spawn behavior.

LoreCrawlerCarl: “Caesura” is a poetry term. Pause/break in a line. Connected to Songstone?

MushroomDebt: If this is connected to that Kage, please tell him to stop spawning punctuation monsters on civilians.

Klaid slowly dragged both hands down his face.

I did not spawn punctuation monsters.

Then his memory supplied the exact moment: his mark on the dungeon text, the Glasscoil erased from the draft, the stanza compensating, the ecosystem answering from underneath.

He lowered his hands.

Okay. I may have relocated one punctuation monster. He thought about his further edits in the next dungeon wings. Okay, more than one. Way more than one.

He scrolled.

RaidDad: Any loot?

MushroomDebt: IT LEFT.

RaidDad: trash design

oStOO: Wait, didn’t the Shifting Galleries world announcement happen last night? The winning party had someone “unwritten.” If that dungeon involved draft monsters and now draft monsters are escaping, we might be seeing aftermath.

PatchnoteProphet: Cross-referencing terms. “Draft,” “Caesura,” “Poet,” “Kage,” “Songstone,” and “Shifting Galleries” may share a narrative system. Building spreadsheet.

dramaaa: bro go outside

PatchnoteProphet: I am outside in-game.

dramaaa: worse

Klaid clicked back to the front page.

The Shifting Galleries megathread had risen two places while he was reading.

He resisted opening it for four seconds.

Then he opened it.

The announcement screenshot sat at the top, already translated into six languages by overexcited fans.

[WORLD ANNOUNCEMENT: A Legacy Raid has been cleared.]

[The Shifting Galleries have accepted a final signature.]

[Let it be known: Vami, Ren, Zherdev, Lily, Julie, Valdrias, Zara, Finn, Jax, and one who chose to remain unwritten have completed The Curator’s Archive.]

The comments under it were a mess.

DungeonGremlin: WORLD FIRST LEGACY RAID ON DAY 5 WHAT

MathGoblin: Required level? Party average? Anyone got logs? Loot table? Please feed me data.

Boomin: ZHERDEV??? Isn’t that the guy who arrived at Korros in a sedan chair and crashed into fruit? That video has a bit of views lmao

FruitVendor: Justice for fruit cart

Hoorus: “one who chose to remain unwritten” is absolutely Kage. Calling it now.

SkepticalBadger: Or a hidden NPC.

Hoorus: NPCs don’t choose privacy settings.

SkepticalBadger: In this game? Bold claim.

Klaid closed the tab before the thread could get smarter.

He sat in his chair with all the tabs lined across the top of the browser like active debuffs.

Songstone, public.

Kage, public.

Vami connection, public.

Glasscoil escape, public.

Fuck me, how was I supposed to know I was releasing WORLD BOSSES INTO THE WORLD.

Shifting Galleries clear, public.

Lyra, overdue.

Mother, tomorrow.

Sleep schedule, dead in a ditch.

His phone buzzed.

Klaid looked down.

Elara: Good. 11:30. Wear something that isn’t black if you own it.

He stared at that for a while.

Then he typed.

Klaid: I own dark gray.

A few seconds passed.

Elara: That’s still black.

He placed the phone beside the keyboard and looked back at the monitor. The forums refreshed. The top video thread gained another thousand replies. Someone had already clipped Vami’s flash-step across the Amphitheater and added dramatic music. Someone else had circled Kage in red and titled the image “WHEN THE SIDE QUEST NPC STARTS PARRYING GOD.”

Another notification appeared in the Songstone thread.

GreenBeanActual: Update 5: If you kneel on the restored stage and ask about “the silent crown,” you receive a quest called [A Note Beneath the Edict]. Requires level 20, 40 ART. Reward hidden. This place is going to be packed by tomorrow.

The Songstone Amphitheater was producing quests now. Public quests. Valerius-adjacent quests. Artistry-gated quests. The world event had stopped being an event and become infrastructure. Players were already farming the edges of a history he had helped rewrite by accident, instinct, and a disturbing amount of poetic violence.

He wanted to log in and fix something.

He also needed to visit Lyra.

He also needed to avoid being recognized.

He also needed to figure out whether a rejected glass serpent—and whatever else he released, somewhere in the world—was now using Korros as a personal screensaver.

The apartment suddenly felt too small for the number of fires on his screen.

Klaid leaned back. The chair creaked under him. He looked at the cold remains of rice in the bowl beside the keyboard, at the phone with Elara’s message, at the forum tabs multiplying consequences.

Then he said, very quietly, to no one at all:

“Well, fuck.”
