So... something happened.
My hard drive suddenly decided it no longer wanted to participate in the development of this game. πΆ
There were a few interesting sounds coming from it beforehand.
Did I take them seriously?
No.
Should I have?
...apparently.
The hard drive failed yesterday, and almost every image I've generated since last Thursday is gone.
The Nia images survived, thankfully. Everything else?
Gone. Reduced to atoms.
πΎ How Did This Happen?
When I built the new PC, I cheaped out a little on storage.
I went with a 128GB SSD and a 2TB hard drive, and most of my AI models already live on the C drive. So the SSD is basically fighting for its life every day.
I normally back the game up to my laptop every week or so for safety.
And, naturally, the hard drive decided to die.
Perfect timing. π
I've now pulled the latest backup from my laptop and started working from there again.
For the moment, I'm literally using a USB drive as my development storage because my C drive is almost completely full.
Professional game development, ladies and gentlemen. π
πΌοΈ What Was Lost?
Except for the Nia images, I need to redo almost all of the recent images.
The good news is that I already know exactly what I generated and what each scene needs, so recreating them shouldn't take nearly as long as making them the first time.
The bad news?
We'll never know if the lost images were better.
Maybe the new ones will be worse.
Maybe they'll be better.
It's entirely in the hands of the RNG gods now. π
So please pray that they bless you all with better images than the ones currently sitting in hard drive heaven.
β³ What Happens Now?
I'm already regenerating everything.
If nothing else explodes, dies, corrupts itself, or starts making suspicious clicking noises, I should have the images redone within 4 to 5 days.
Hopefully, this is the last setback.
