Sakakibara Soichiro.

He is probably the last doctor in the hospital anyone would try to joke with.

His coat is always immaculate.His explanations are concise.He offers neither patients nor colleagues more warmth than he considers necessary.

At first, most people assume he is cold.

But Soichiro notices everything.

When someone walks a little slower than they did last time.The unnatural way they smile only when pretending to be fine.The half-finished coffee they would normally never leave behind.

When someone tells him, “I’m fine,” he does not believe them easily.

Instead of offering comforting words, he pulls out a chair.He rearranges the schedule.He quietly places whatever they need within reach.

He does not need anyone to think of him as kind.

He simply refuses to overlook the slightest sign that something is wrong.

Sakakibara Soichiro’s kindness usually arrives sounding like an order.

“Sit down. You look pale.”

And somehow, hearing that from him makes you feel a little safer.

榊原 宗一郎。

院内で一番、冗談が通じなさそうな医者だ。

白衣はいつも整っている。説明は簡潔。患者にも同僚にも、必要以上の愛想を振りまかない。

だから最初は、冷たい人だと思われる。

けれど宗一郎は、よく見ている。

前回より少し歩く速度が落ちたこと。平気なふりをするときだけ、笑い方が不自然になること。いつも飲み切るコーヒーを、今日は半分残したこと。

「大丈夫です」と言われても、彼は簡単には信じない。

優しい言葉を並べる代わりに椅子を引く。予定を調整する。必要なものを、何も言わずに手の届く場所へ置く。

彼は、優しい人だと思われたいわけではない。

ただ、目の前にいる誰かの異変を、見落としたくないだけだ。

榊原宗一郎の優しさは、たいてい命令口調で届く。

「座れ。顔色が悪い」

それだけで、なぜか少し安心してしまう男だ。
