Last month, Zack Beauchamp traveled to Brazil to report on how the country successfully turned back its would-be autocrat, former President Jair Bolsonaro.
After losing his campaign for reelection in 2022, Bolsonaro attempted to lay the groundwork for a coup; in 2023, his supporters launched a January 6-style attack on federal government buildings in Brazil’s capital. Both failed, and Bolsonaro is now serving a 27-year prison sentence.
In his reporting, Zack uncovered the ways Brazil’s democracy is “almost uniquely resistant to the tactics Trump is using in America today” — and the lessons that Brazil’s experience can offer for the US.
